Cover:During the sixties, a picture of the Cubanpolitician Ernesto ”Che” Guevara de la Sernawas widely published around the world and itquickly became a symbol for revolutionarymovements. On the 6th of March 1960, Cubanagricultural worker Alberto Diaz GutierrezKorda used a Leica M2 with a 90 mm lensto make this famous photograph of ”Che” inHavana, Cuba.

5plated. With that in mind, ErnstLeitz II secured the most importantpatents for Barnack’s small cameraduring a trip to America early in1914. Of course it was also impor-tant to make the camera user-friendly for untrained persons. Use-ful features such as a viewfinder, arangefinder, a shutter for adjustableexposure times and a cassette fordaylight film loading still had to bedeveloped.

Building on the Ur-Leica’s innova-tion, details of the new camerawere lovingly refined, and a fewyears later it was ready to be intro-duced to the market as the Leica I(or Leica A in America). The daringdecision to produce this cameraand to offer it to the public heraldeda regular boom in photography andpaved the way for modern photo-journalism.

Small negatives - large pictures. All the small format cameras thatwere to follow later were based onthis simple formula. The LEICAcamera was the pioneer that suc-ceeded. It evolved from the proudattitude of not accepting every tech-nical boundary.

Oskar Barnack was not a manguided by conventional possibilities. He created his own. And one daythis led him to an ingeniously sim-ple idea with wide-ranging conse-quences.

Actually, Oskar Barnack had beenworking at the Ernst Leitz companyin Wetzlar, Germany, since 1911 inthe capacity of manager of the re-search department for micro-scopes. It was said of him that hewas able to sense even the veryfinest tolerances with his fingertips. This headstrong stickler for preci-sion had a hobby that was ratherexotic at that time: cinematography,or in more familiar terms, moviemaking. At the beginning of the20th century, its technology wasstill in its infancy. To be able tomake reliable exposure tests, Bar-nack needed something like asmall, handy testing instrumentthat used a fixed shutter speed of1/40 of a second to expose shortlengths of the film material used inlarge motion picture cameras. Sincea comparable device was not avail-able, the master simply built hisown personal instrument to suit hisneeds. In doing so, he more or lessby chance made an interesting dis-covery: the relatively coarse-grainedfilm material of that era producedjust about acceptable results evenwhen enlarged to postcard size.Barnack simply doubled the standard18 x 24 mm motion picture film for-mat - thus arriving at the 24x36 mmnegative size that was to become aworld standard. With that, his olddream became feasible: a camerathat fits in one’s pocket.

However, a number of obstaclesstill had to be overcome before se-ries production could be contem-

There are very diverse methods of developing a miniature camera. Some of them seem to evolve in between. And always when there issomething new and exciting. With others it is more a question of su-perlatives. When enough of them come together, the time is ripe for asuccessor. And regrettably for the predecessor as well. And then thereis a camera whose strategists and technicians take into account avery special development factor: life. Life with photography and withthe unrelenting desire to make better pictures. The Leica M is a cam-era whose design was influenced significantly by the work and thefeed-back by outstanding photographers. The LEICA M6 is the currentculmination of this evolution. Basically still an M-camera, up-to-datein technology and couched in 80 years of pictorial experience.

Making agoodphotograph

isnotanart.

As time goes by, those who like to take pictures and do it often, discover more and more fine points and differences. A special charac-teristic of a LEICA M6 is that it draws its owner’s attention to detailsthat would normally go unnoticed. To work with this camera is alearning process with lots of gratifying results that ignite our motiva-tion and enhance our enjoyment of photography. In the long run, itquite automatically leads us to study our subjects more intently, which in turn leads to extraordinary results. Eventually, it is no longeran art for the owner of a Leica M camera to make a good photograph. And yet, his or her pictures will increasingly reflect artistic tenden-cies.

Viewfinder image of the LEICA M6: bright-line frames for 50 and 75 mm lenses.

Sometimes art is a matterof technology.

The LEICA M6 is a mechanicalrangefinder camera that concen-trates on the essentials of photog-raphy: composition, distance, expo-sure. Its center for creative com-position is the combined range- andviewfinder that consists of morethan 100 precision parts, assem-bled with scrupulous precision. TheLEICA M6 is available with 0.72x or0.85x viewfinder magnification.

The Leica viewfinder features anextraordinarily bright and contrastyimage of unchanging size and it alsoserves for the exact control of focusand exposure settings. Its combinedsplit-image and coincidence range-finder enables you to focus quicklyand accurately, even in poor light. The light balance at the bottom ofthe viewfinder image allows you toset the correct aperture and shutterspeed combination.

The fields covered by LEICA Mlenses are outlined by bright-lineframes that appear in the viewfind-er - always in pairs - for focallengths of 28* and 90 mm, 35 and135 mm, and 50 and 75 mm. As alens is attached to the camera, itautomatically activates the appropri-ate bright-line frame in theviewfinder. Any pair of frames canalso be activated manually. Thisunique viewfinder design makes itpossible to determine, before mak-ing the exposure, which focallength covers the subject to its bestadvantage.

A LEICA M thus demonstratesthat art is a matter of creativity andskill. But it is also a matter of tech-nology.

the term ‘cult object’ would inevitably come to mind. To regard thiscamera in a strictly rational manner is virtually impossible. The Leica Mcamera is the tool of choice of the world’s very best photographers. It is the photojournalist’s camera that has been capturing historicalmoments on film for four generations. And by virtue of its own evolu-tion, it is enveloped in an aura of perfection. A Leica M is not merely acamera - it has a fascinating mystique all its own. Who would wantto ignore that?

15Tool and cult object. It was not a whim of chance thatbrought LEICA M cameras theirworldwide reputation. It was the re-sult of the perfect interplay of yearsof research, an intelligent conceptand meticulous selection of materi-als and fabrication methods.

A LEICA M camera consists ofup to 1348 individual parts. For eachone of these parts, painstaking carewas taken to determine exactly theright material. The top plate is an0.8 mm thick zinc diecasting, forspecial models it is drawn from 0.8mm thick sheet brass, as are all thebaseplates. High-precision function-al parts are made of steel, brass oraluminum, and all of them receivespecialized surface treatments.Highly sophisticated surface treat-ment of optical surfaces, developedby Leica engineers, ensure protec-tion against the elements andagainst scratches. Even in the man-ufacture ofLEICA M lenses, many of the spe-cial glasses are made to formula-tions developed at Leica.

Naturally, the results of such car-ing fabrication elicits emotions. Formany renowned photographers, theLEICA M is both a dependable tooland a cult object.

For some, it barely takes a year, for others it may take five yearsor even longer. But there comes a day for everyone when it is time forthe great review. The sorting of hundreds of accumulated prints, neg-atives and slides. A part of life passes before one’s inner eyes. A bit of pride may swell in your chest, about this or that brilliantlycaptured situation, about a single fleeting expression that describessomeone’s personality better than a hundred other pictures, or abouta very special portrait of a child that tugs at your heartstrings. Butthis largely depends on your criteria, and very much on your camera.

Bright and clear: the display on the back ofthe LEICA SF 20 electronic flash unit.

Accurate blending of ambient and flashillumination: the displays below the view-finder image with the light balance.

More light, less flash. Selective exposure meteringwith the LEICA M6 also works veryaccurately in extremely poor lightconditions. When the shutter iswound, a silicon cell inside thecamera measures the light reflect-ed by a white spot on the shuttercurtain. The exposure meter is acti-vated by a gentle pressure on theshutter release button.

TTL flash exposure control broad-ens the creative latitude of LEICA Mphotographers. Even though LEICA Mlenses are superbly suited for avail-able light photography - as docu-mented by stunning photographsfrom all over the world - neverthe-less there are occasional situationswhen there is not enough lighteven for these high aperture lens-es. This is where the precise flashexposure control of the LEICA M6TTL is just the right solution, espe-cially in combination with the LEICASF 20 - the compact flash unitwith Leica design. The accuratecontrol of the flash output opens abroad field for creative photography.Ambient light can be combined har-moniously with the flash-illuminat-ed foreground.

20 Howmanypounds doesThere are 35 mm cameras that weigh less. But they have to make

concessions with regard to quality and durability. On the other hand, there also much heavier and thus burdensome camera outfits. Thosewe prefer to leave at home. The LEICA M6 is at the low end as far asweight is concerned, and at the very top for professionality. The rea-sons for that are its uncompromised quality and its ingeniously sim-ple concept. It is compatible with something that we always havewith us anyway: our heads. Weighing less than two pounds (withmost lenses), the LEICA M6 is more at home in a pocket than in analuminum case. From there it is easily accessible and ready for thatdecisive moment. And one need not look like a professional photo-grapher. We think this is style.

Magnitude is not necessarily a matter of height and width.

A LEICA M6 TTL does not haveto be large to prove its magnitude.Measuring only 79 mm (3 1/8”)high x 138 mm (5 7/16”) long x 38mm (1 1/2”) deep, it is remarkablycompact. On the road, it is quicklyready for action.

This is one of the features thatenabled photojournalists around theworld to capture dramatic events, among them many that today rep-resent significant moments of history.

Superlatives of ”height x length xdepth” therefore do not meanmuch in terms of the magnitude ofa camera.

24 Whymust a

sportscarlook sleek?

Every object has its shape, usually related to its purpose. Design-ers talk about ”Form follows function.” Things look like they do be-cause of what they are. The looks of a sports car tells us what it wasmade for. For martial acceleration orgies, for breathtaking powerdrifts and for speeds around curves that make one’s senses swirl. That is pure fascination. And because one can imagine that at firstsight, such a car becomes an attraction even while standing still in itsparking slot. The design of the LEICA M6 has the same effect: one cansee what it was made for. And this necessarily generates attention, re-spect and interested questions, even when it is just lying there.

27A Leica. As beautiful as its name.

A product that outlives fashiontrends because its style always re-mains fresh and current is called aclassic. It becomes a classic be-cause simplicity and clean linescombine harmoniously with perfor-mance and function.

The aesthetics and elegance ofLeica M cameras are the logicalresult of their function. Since thebasic function of Leica M camerashas not changed, there has beenhardly any change in their classicshape.

A LEICA M does not paradeits capabilities. Instead, it tends tostylish understatement. It showsrestraint even as the shutter isreleased, because one has to listenquite closely to hear its whisper-quiet klick.

Page 28: LEICA M - Aristotle University of Thessalonikiusers.auth.gr/narmenis/files/M6 brochure komplett_e.pdf · 2004. 5. 24. · LEICA M lenses, many of the spe-cial glasses are made to

Whisperquiet, completely unnoticed by others, the precise mecha-nism inside the camera performs its function. Actually it was muchtoo dark. Besides, perhaps one should have inquired. But the manwith the small camera didn’t even consider it necessary to lookthrough the viewfinder for very long. He simply relied on his intu-ition. Actually, everything had already run its course by then. Beforeanyone could have had the urge to strike a pose. That must have beena LEICA at work. Probably an M6. Possibly with a fast lens. And itsowner now has a pretty good picture in his pocket.

31A bright moment in photography. The 50 mm f/1 LEICA NOC-TILUX-M lens is superbly suited forphotography at twilight and evenfor night-time pictures withoutflash. The photograph on the leftshowing a woman riding a Vespawas made with a LEICA M and thislens.

In spite of the high aperture ofthe NOCTILUX-M, contrast rendi-tion and color differentiation areoutstanding, even with the lenswide open. Because the full aper-ture of a LEICA M lens is alwaysavailable, it thus becomes a ”work-ing aperture”.

That is the result of maximumoptical performance. A subject indim light becomes a bright momentin photography.

How one earns the reputation of makingthe world’s best lenses.

NOCTILUX-M and the compact col-lapsible ELMAR-M (see the illustra-tion on the left).

To compress the depth of spaceand to exclude distracting surround-ings - long focal length lenseshave more to offer than bridgingdistances: four lenses with focallengths ranging from 75 to 135 mmdefine the upper range of LEICA Mlenses.

For LEICA M photographers whoprefer to take a lightweight outfiton their photographic trips, theLEICA TRI-ELMAR-M is the rightanswer. Instead of three lenses, the photographer needs to takealong only one. Turning a ring on thelens mount enables the photo-grapher to select a focal length of28, 35 or 50 mm.

LEICA M lenses are hand-assem-bled with meticulous care and theirstringent tolerances are checkedconstantly throughout the assem-bly process. Procedures that can beextremely complex are used togrind, polish, center and coat indi-vidual lens elements. Metal compo-nents assure lasting high precisionof the adjustment elements. Everylens that leaves our factory is amasterpiece produced with highlytrained professional skill.

And by the way: the LEICA M3introduced in 1954 is as fully com-patible with the very latest LEICA Mlenses as today’s LEICA M6 is withM-lenses made in 1954!

As different as the characteristicsof LEICA M lenses may be - theirdecisive qualities are identical: pre-cision, dependability, sturdiness, value retention, pleasant handlingand optical perfection. 14 LEICA Mlenses provide ample latitude tocover any subject. And with theirhigh apertures, ambient light can beused to its best advantage.

In cramped quarters, five wide-angle lenses with focal lengthsranging from 21 to 35 mm pro-vide an overview, space and dyna-mics. Four lenses with differentmaximum apertures are availablewith the standard focal length of50 mm, among them the light-giant

Every camera has its limitations. They could stem from its technolo-gy, its degree of mobility or perhaps its readiness in extreme situa-tions. The LEICA M camera is a mechanical masterpiece. Its shutterdoes not require a power supply. It is as dependable in freezing tem-peratures and in tropical heat as it is in ordinary daily use. It is handy, easy to operate, fits in a coat pocket, from where it is quickly readyfor use. With all these qualities, the LEICA M does not lead a personinto technical extremes, but into expanded photographic possibilities. And that, after all, is what we always wanted.

Tailored to its purpose for use under all cli-mate conditions: the LEICA M camera.

Simple and secure film loading, even afterdecades of use: LEICA M camera with remov-able baseplate and hinged back cover.

With all the affection, you can still occasionally treat it roughly.

When a Leica is taken along on agreat expedition, it has alreadywithstood the toughest hardships.Because it first had to pass a bat-tery of tests at the Leica factory. Insevere climate tests, it has to with-stand extreme temperature fluctua-tions, in relentless vibration tests, ithas to prove its ability to surviveharsh impacts.

That substantiates its ability tofunction with steady dependability, even under extreme conditions. Itsdependability is further enhancedby the fact that it does not dependon electronics. The rigid all-metalbody with a hinged back cover canwithstand very high stresses. But ifsome day a LEICA M looks a bitscruffy, it is very likely only its exte-rior appearance. Its inner mecha-nisms continue to function as pre-cisely as they did on the first day, even after a hundred thousand ormore exposures.

Of course one can regard a LEICA M to be a gem, and one canconfidently consider it to be very special. But that does not meanthat it is delicate or in any way temperamental. Its extremely sturdybody housing protects it from attacks from the outside, and its ro-bust precision mechanism is made for eternity. The LEICA M6 is de-signed all the way through to become a lifetime companion for itsowner. And when something should become damaged during thatlifetime, it can be replaced. Because the more than 1000 individualparts of every LEICA M camera remain available for many decades.

Photography with a LEICA M ispure creative photography. Its tech-nology is concentrated upon the es-sential: It neither requires automat-ic exposure controls nor complexelectronics.

Inside the LEICA M, mechanicalprecision, robustness and scrupu-lously meticulous fabrication cometogether harmoniously.

The components of a LEICA Mare assembled manually, piece bypiece. The rugged metal body hous-ing gives the inner mechanisms theperfect final all-around protection. Its sturdy mechanisms can there-fore function with absolute accura-cy, even under extreme conditions.

The photographer is unencum-bered and able to concentrate onthe composition of his photograph. That is liberating.

good picturesfrom the hip?

When you take a LEICA M camera into your hands, you begin anew experience in photography. Its ingenious viewfinder conceptgenerated a new style of photography. A LEICA M photographer does-n’t passively disappear behind the camera, he or she remains an ac-tive participant in the scene. That is the only way the uniquely lifelikecharacter of LEICA M photography could evolve, producing amongother things, some of the world’s most impressive journalistic pic-tures. A LEICA M camera simply motivates spontaneity. It does notdirect attention to itself, but to the subject. It invites experimenta-tion and intuitive handling of photography. And throughout all that itremains an extremely precise tool that rewards good ideas with per-fect pictures.

When you take pictures with aLEICA M, you always have anoverview. Even with the camera atyour eye, you can view the entirescene and react quickly. You remainin eye-contact with the people youwish to photograph.

In addition, you work nearlysilently. That’s because the LEICA Mfeatures a rubberized cloth shutterthat has proven itself for decadesand that functions discreetly andwhisper-quietly. And in real time:the subject is captured at the mo-ment the shutter release button ispressed, as fascinating momentsoften last a mere fraction of a sec-ond. That is because this purely me-chanical shutter requires no spring-loaded diaphragm mechanism inthe lens nor a hinged mirror thathas to flip out of the light path be-fore the exposure is made. Withshutter speeds ranging from 1 to1/1000 second plus ”B” for timeexposures, it provides flexibility forall kinds of light conditions.

Demanding photographers whovalue sensitivity, intuition, spon-taneity and participation in theirwork, would be hardpressed tofind a more appropriate tool than aLEICA M camera.

Ingenious inventions have permanence:Changed very little since the time of OskarBarnack: the extremely quiet, horizontallyrunning rubberized cloth focal plane shutter.

Ideal technical solutions are independent of the time of their inven-tion. The LEICA M is a classic and it will always remain one, because itsbasic concept is uniquely sound. Over the years, the LEICA M line hasbeen very cautiously refined. Sensible innovations were added thatwere not necessarily essential, but which can provide photographerswith greater personal latitude. Whatever will be added to the LEICA Mcamera in the future: it will always occur within the framework of thebasic concept, and with the uncompromising quality standards of Leicaengineers. That applies to every detail of this camera, which people atLeica lovingly assemble by hand, piece by piece.

It is therefore quite understand-able that the LEICA M camera is acoveted object of value that be-comes a lifelong companion. Life-long? No, that isn’t quite right. Be-cause a LEICA M is also a welcomeinheritance.

Longevity and value retention ofour products have been importantpillars of Leica company philosophyfrom the very beginning. Leica Mcameras and lenses have consis-tently conformed to these basic prin-ciples in every detail. The LEICA Mbayonet mount was and is the per-fect solution for its functionality.Consequently to this day, it has notbeen altered since 1954.

As a result, the latest LEICA Mlens will fit the earlier M cameras

Would you wear ChronographDisposable lighters, ball-point pens, plastic watches: The world is

full of things that serve their purpose for a while and then sooner orlater disappear in the garbage dump. That is OK as long as it is practi-cal. But it is bad if it deprives its owner of enjoyment. Because thosewho regard things with a more philosophical attitude find special plea-sure in more thorough and lasting relationships. This applies more tophotography than to hardly anything else. A camera documents lifeand thereby becomes a part of life. Why then should we think in strict-ly practical terms about this particular point? A LEICA M, therefore, ismuch more than just a camera: it has style, it is part of a way of life, adedication to better photography and a companion for life.

Fashion products that will beoutdated by tomorrow, newtrends virtually every day, theever spreading one-way mentali-ty, the accelerating pace of inno-vations: everyone has had verypersonal experiences with that, often enough unpleasant ones.

That motivates us to appreci-ate long-lasting and dependablethings. There is a growing desirefor alternatives, for proven andspecial things.

LEICA M photographers areindividualists who derive plea-sure from extraordinary qualityand timeless beauty. They con-sciously cultivate a very person-al style that transcends the ac-celerating rhythm of short-livedmass products.

A LEICA M camera signifieslongevity, meticulous manualcraftsmanship and scrupuloushigh quality. Values that bringlifelong pleasure to its owner. And which represent far morethan a sober retail price is ableto express.

Creating special and lastingvalues has been a long traditionat Leica. This has made Leicaproducts sought-after aroundthe world. And it made thename LEICA become legendary.

cost?

compactcameraA LEICA M camera is one of the few investments in life that does

not lose value. If anything, a LEICA M of the fifties is worth more to-day than it was then, and it continues to give its owner that exquisitefeeling that it gave him at the time he acquired it: pleasure from one’sown creativity and from the blossoming of that creativity. There are anumber of things in photography that cannot be purchased. The LEICA Mcamera is a key to those things. Because it is so multi-layered thatone is always discovering new aspects. Not of the camera - but ofoneself.
