RAV NOAM SENDOR, Informal Educator and Jewish Studies Teacher

On Tisha B’Av, we sit amongst the ruins of Jerusalem. Though we are forever grateful just how lucky we are (in normal years) to

be able to walk through the streets of Jerusalem, on Tisha B’Av, we see the city for what it is not, for what it’s missing. However,

the purpose of Tisha B’Av is not to wallow in sorrow, but rather to empower us to emerge with renewed strength and commitment

to rebuild this world. This is the beautiful message relayed in the Gemara on Berachot 3a. Rabbi Yossi was walking through the

streets of Jerusalem, and he entered into a ruin in order to pray. Eliyahu HaNavi waited outside for him to finish. When Rabbi Yossi

finishes, Eliyahu HaNavi asks him, what are you doing? To which Rabbi Yossi replies, I was afraid my prayer would be interrupted

by those who pass by. Eliyahu says to him, “You should have stayed on the road and prayed a short prayer.”

Rabbi J.J. Shachter gave a powerful explanation of this mysterious encounter. Rabbi Yossi was a second-generation student of

Rebbe Akiva, after the death of Rebbe Akiva’s 24,000 students. Eliyahu HaNavi was saying to Rabbi Yossi, you should follow

the example of your teacher Rebbe Akiva, who after witnessing such great destruction including the destruction of the Second

Temple, always found the strength to comfort those around him and rebuild. Don’t stay inside the place of ruin, go out into the

street and impact those around you. Don’t worry about them changing you, change them!

Am Yisrael has in many ways inherited the spirit of Rebbe Akiva. Though we have faced horrific tragedy in our own days, we

always bounce back, we always pick ourselves up, shake off the dust and start healing.

We are in deep need of this spirit. This past year has been very difficult. Illness, death,

shuttered schools and shuls, worldwide social upheaval and economic instability, and, oh yea,

same day, but yet, here we are. We have survived, and the difficulties we face aren’t so difficult

after all in comparison to what our ancestors faced. However, Tisha B’Av is also a cosmic push.

A push to remind ourselves of why these disasters befell our people and what we need to

This Shabbat is Shabbat Nachamu, the Shabbat of comfort, following the past couple weeks of mourning, culminating in Tisha

B’Av. Rav Shagar (Shimshon Gershon Rosenberg) zt”l, the great Israeli writer and thinker, wrote that “comfort is not healing, but

rather making room for the wounds to appear, not as rage and depression that disrupt life, but the opposite, to deepen life and

our belief in the good, and to refine our relationships.” Comfort is not some passive experience, a wash of relief after a trauma.

Rather it is a courageous embrace of the pain whilst still believing in healing and goodness. This type of comfort and healing, like

love, is hard work. We can only be comforted when recognize just how far we have become disconnected from each other. It is, of

course, much easier to be blissfully ignorant and stay in our boxes.

I have in the past related to the comfort of Shabbat Nachamu as a release from the pain of mourning and fasting. Now I see the

opposite to be true. It is a call to do something with our mourning and fasting, and not let it fade with time. We must read, in that

light, the opening line to the famous Haftorah of Shabbat Nachamu as follows: "נחמו נחמו עמי יאמר אלקיכם" –Do not read “Be

consoled, be consoled my people,” but rather, “Console, console my people, says your God.” To find comfort, you must first step

out of your comfort zone and be courageously open and authentic to see others who they really are and love them because they

are Hashem’s people. Nothing else. It is time for us to heal all rifts and break down boundaries and do what we can to address

the injustice and difficulty that others experience. Let’s be there for each other however we can, let’s comfort each other however

we can. With that, I would like to bless us all with a Shabbat of true comfort. Shabbat Shalom.

From something that looks as simple as stacking blocks on

top of each other, endless possibilities can be found. All of a

sudden, you have made a tall tower, or a rocket ship, or even

creating a big birthday cake for a friend’s birthday. Children

find stories in everything that they touch. Every day we see

new ideas being evolved into something larger than was first

expected. This is one of the many beautiful aspects of learning

through play.

Children are encouraged to feel comfortable in how they

express themselves while in the ELC environment and although

we help to facilitate their learning by giving provocations, it

ultimately is up to them which direction their learning goes. In

each room you see the joy that comes from a child when that

tall tower topples to the ground, or when one child playing by

themselves suddenly becomes a group of four children. All of

these interactions help mould confidence and communication

between peers and teachers.

It is these small ideas which we use to spark interest in a topic

or to guide a group conversation. Sharing ideas is vital, be it

between children or parents and teachers.

It has been wonderful to see how, even during this unusual

time, that the importance of communication through play is still

as strong as ever.

Melbourne's first lockdown saw teddy bears and rainbows appear in windows, now lockdown 2.0 has another activity for stir-crazy children as communities full of brightly painted wooden spoon characters pop up across the suburbs. Spoonville communities can be seen in many neightbourhoods.

Lower Primary are making their own Spoonville village with the children creating characters and placing them in their garden.Yavneh Spoonville will be relocated to the school gardens once we are back on site. We would love to see as many spoons as possible added to our village. So, get creating!!!!

Melbourne's first lockdown saw teddy bears and rainbows appear in windows. Now lockdown 2.0 has another activity and Year 2

have jumped on board! During the week, students have been designing and creating brightly coloured wooden and plastic spoon

In Israel Studies in Year 1 we are presently studying a booklet

entitled The Kotel. It is an interactive “tell together” story where

the students pause as the story is being read to act out scenes

through movement and sound, stop to imagine what the words

are trying to describe and sing songs about Jerusalem with

the characters of the story. We have been following groups of

children telling us stories through different points in the history

of the Beit Hamikdash. The children in the stories have helped

us understand what the Beit Hamikdash was, why we need a

special day to remember it and why we miss it so much 2000

years after it was destroyed!

We began by learning how hard the Jewish people worked to

build the Beit Hamikdash, why it was so special to the Jewish

people and all about the beauty of the Beit Hamikdash. Each

child created their own special stones to help build our Year 1

wall for the Beit Hamikdash which is proudly displayed on our

classroom board.

THE KOTEL THROUGH TIMEMICHELLE SHARP, Primary Jewish Studies Teacher

We learned about how the Shalosh Regalim were celebrated

in the time of the Beit Hamikdash. They “experienced” what

happened in the Beit Hamikdash on Succot and what makes

Succot the “Holiday of Joy”.

We are learning about the siege of Jerusalem and the

destruction of the second Beit Hamikdash by the Romans. We

are learning how hard it was to live in Jerusalem at that time

and how sad it was for the people to leave their city.

The final chapter of our story focuses on Jerusalem and the

Kotel today and our ability to visit there and daven to Hashem.

May we all merit to be able to daven at the Kotel, the last

remaining wall of the Beit Hamikdash, and through our tefillot

and acts of kindness, merit to help rebuild the the third Beit

Hamikdash, bimherah b’yameinu, soon in our days!

In this week’s BatME session, we learnt about the story of when Rivka showed kindness to a servant. In this story, Rivka went

down to the fountain to fill her pitcher and went back up. A servant ran toward her, and he said, “Please let me sip a little water

from your pitcher.” She then said, “Drink my lord.” And she hastened and lowered her pitcher to her hand, and she gave him

to drink. When she finished giving him to drink, she said, "I will also draw for your camels, until they will have finished drinking."

Loving-kindness is said to be greater than charity. Rivka had shown kindness to a stranger, Eliezer. Because of Rivka’s actions,

Eliezer thought she was worthy of Yitzhak. This is how Rivka and Yitzhak got married. We also learned that “Small choices

become actions, actions become habits, and habits become our way of life.” We were given different situations and all shared

how we would personally deal with them. This was a great way to learn to handle certain situations and decisions.

This BatME session taught me a lot about to be careful with my decisions and to always be kind to others.

This was the major question that the English department pondered as we entered our first round of remote learning at the end of

Term 1. Fast forward a term, and we sadly still find ourselves in a remote setting. However, the question we were so afraid of has

been not only answered but conquered by both the fabulous efforts of the English staff, and the resilience and the competency of

all Yavneh students.

As the terms progressed, it became apparent that English was significant for so many reasons. We were teaching literary texts

representing numerous kinds of trauma and tension, in a world where students may also be experiencing this in their reality. This

wasn’t something we as staff took lightly, and considered it more than once in our various staff meetings.

So, the question was posed; Would reading these texts prove to be a solace for students, an example of the broader role literature

has in our society, or a trauma all of its own?

But what we have all seen is immense. In a time where empathy is needed more than ever, students have employed this in

not only their daily life, but their approach to understanding and interpreting texts. They have considered viewpoints they may

have never been asked to before, empathise with characters that traditionally don’t deserve it, advocate for the notion of being

On Monday night the first session for the Year 10 Manhigut

leadership program was held. Due to the circumstances, it was

only a short session that had to be held online. Despite that

though, many of the Year 10s joined the session eager to find

out about the program and what it involved. We had a quick

introduction outlining the program and we then were split up

into small groups for a quick learning session. We learnt about

a couple great Jewish leaders, specifically Moshe and Gideon

and how they reacted to their roles. We then came back

together as one big group and discussed the topic. How these

leaders responded, and how this is relevant to us, about to learn to become leaders ourselves. We spoke about how a leader

isn’t someone who is served by others, they are someone who serves the people they lead. We are all very excited to start this

program and learn a lot more!

CONTINUED‘right and just’, and further understood how literature can be used not only to represent a snapshot in time, but also provide a

mechanism for reflection and change.

Furthermore, students have shown an ever-increasing amount of resilience as we have asked them to change a lot of aspects

of learning English that they were previously familiar with. Most students haven’t put pen to paper in quite a while now, instead,

utilising online writing and skills programs to further their knowledge. The accessibility of this has been excellent, and maybe

signals a sign of the changing times for the art of handwriting!

This Kesher, I would like to give a special mention to our Year 7 students, who showed their ability to merge English and

technology together in spectacular fashion with the creation of a ‘Fad ad Campaign’. In term 3, they were learning about the

power of persuasive language through the medium of advertising (both print and media). In a display of their skills, students

were asked to create their very own persuasive ad, trying to sell the best few ‘fad’ product on the market. The results were a true

testament to just how innovative and diverse our Yavneh learners are.

Enjoy!

FROM THE SECONDARY LIBRARY

DAVID EASTON, Secondary Librarian

The Book of Chance is by New South Wales author Sue Whiting. Thirteen-year-old Chance has

lived an ideal existence. On the surface it might appear to be just her mother and Chance, but

together with Chance’s best friend Alek, who lives next door with her family from South Sudan,

Chance really has one big extended family.

Her mother is great, she helps refugee families to settle in Australia. But when they all decide to

get her house a surprise makeover from the reality TV show called ‘I just Want to Thank You’,

Chance is suddenly confronted with the truth about who she really is.

Once this starts, Chance cannot stop digging for answers and her whole world starts to unravel.

Sue Whiting spent many years writing and submitting and collecting an ever-increasing pile

of rejection slips. Her first break came when she became a contract writer for The Book

Company Publishing, writing texts for novelty books. Later she left primary teaching for a

career in publishing and is now a full-time writer and freelance editor. She has now written

more than 60 books. Sue lives in a small coastal village south of Sydney.

Wink is by American author Rob Harrell. Imagine being in year 7 and waking up one morning

with a swollen eye that escalates rapidly into a rare cancer diagnosis, and most likely blindness.

Ross Maloy just wants to fit in. But after his diagnosis with this rare cancer in year 7, he suddenly

becomes the ‘cancer kid’ of his school. Now he has to deal with the weird hats, a squinty

eye and hardest of all, disappearing friends, social media bullies, and the threat of losing his

eyesight.

Based on Rob Harrell’s real-life experiences and packed with his cartoons and illustrations. The

story is about persistence, friendship and finding your way through and incredibly tough journey.

Rob Harrell is a renowned cartoonist, illustrator and author. In high school, Rob created a

cartoon strip for the school paper every week and landed himself in some trouble with the

administration of the school after trying his hand at political satire.

Rob created and drew the international comic strip Big Top, as well as the graphic novel

Monster on the Hill. He also writes and draws the long running daily comic Adam@Home.

He lives with his wife in Austin, Texas.
