INTRODUCTION

WelcometoLehmanHighSchool,andtheLehmanLoboBand!YouareaprivilegedmemberofoneofthenewestandfastestgrowingbandsinCentralTexas.Thishandbookhasbeenpreparedtoprovideyouwithasmuchinformationaspossibleaboutmembershipinthisprogram.Thisincludesscheduling,activitiesandrequirements,sothatyoufullyunderstandyourresponsibilitiesandexpectations,inordertoreceivethe

maximumenjoymentfromyourparticipation.

ThemissionoftheLehmanBandProgramistocultivateinallofourstudents,alife-longinterestin,andanappreciationofmusicwhilecontinuallyraisingourstandardsofexcellencethroughunifiedefforts,mutualrespect,and

commongoals,buildinguponanewtraditionofsuccess.

Toachievethismission,bothstudentsandstaffdevotetheirenergiesto:• Pursuingthoseendeavorsthatdefineexcellenceinadistinguishedmusicalorganization,• Demonstratingmusicalknowledgeandproficiencythroughperformanceinavarietyofmediumsincluding:

a) ConcertBand.b) MarchingBand.c) JazzEnsemble.d) Percussion.e) ColorGuardandWinterGuard.f) SmallandMediumEnsembles.g) IndividualPerformanceandAchievement.

• Giving and receiving instruction in those skills thatwill foster the desire to excel, and build team skills, self-esteem,andsatisfactioninbothindividualandgroupperformance.

Individualmusicianshipwillbeemphasizedthroughouttheyearandisthebackboneofthisorganization. Ingeneral,the focus from June throughearlyNovember ison themarchingband. EarlyNovember throughMay focuseson theconcertbands.GeneralParticipationStatementPerformanceofmusicisthestandardbywhichlearningandproficiencyaremeasured.Therefore,allbandstudentsare required to participate in EVERY performance unless otherwise authorized by their director. Theseperformances include football games, marching contests, pep rallies, parades, scheduled local concerts, concertcontests,andanycompetitionsrequiredbyagivenperformancegroup.Toeliminateschedulingconflicts,thecompleteannualperformancescheduleis:

ColorGuardTheLehmanColorGuardisthevisualperformanceensembleoftheLehmanHighSchoolBandProgram.Inadditiontotheuseofdance,drill,andtheatrics,membersoftheColorGuardlearntoperformwithvariouspiecesofequipmentincludingflag,rifle,andsabre,aswellasothermiscellaneousprops.Duringthefallsemester,theColorGuardperformsaspartoftheLehmanBand,performingatallVarsityfootballgames,UILcontests,andBandsofAmericaRegionalChampionships.LikeBand,ColorGuardClassmeetsdailyandreceivesthesameacademiccreditthatotherbandmembersreceive.IntheSpringtheLehmanColorGuardcompetesin“WinterGuard”contestshostedbytheTexasColorGuardCircuit,andWinterGuardInternational.TheLehmanColorGuardisthe2011TCGCScholasticRegionalABronzeMedalist,the2012TCGCScholasticRegionalASTATECHAMPION,a2014and2015StateFinalist,andWGIRegionalFinalist.ParticipationinAncillaryGroupsoftheLehmanBandTheLehmanHighSchoolBandiscomprisedofseveralsmaller,ancillaryperforminggroups.Currentlythosegroupsare:Colorguard,Winterguard,LoboSteel,LehmanJazz,MariachiTrumpets,Drumline,andMusicalPit.StudentsparticipatingintheseensemblesmustmaintainenrollmentwithinLehmanHighSchoolBand.AnystudentwhochoosestowithdrawfromtheLehmanHighSchoolBandwillalsoforfeittheirmembershipinanyancillarygroups.

GENERALINFORMATIONCareofFacilities

BandMemberswillobserveallpoliciessetforthbytheSchoolDistrict,inadditiontothefollowing,astheypertaintotheinstrumentalmusicsetting:1. Studentswillbringnofood,drinks,candyorgumintheBandHallareawithoutpermissionfromaband

director.2. Studentswillnotplayonequipmenttheydonotownorhavepermissionfromadirectortouse.3. Studentswillnottouch,handle,borrow,oruseanyoneelse'sinstrument,uniform,orpersonalbelongings.4. Whenallowedinthebandhall,eitherbeforeorafterschool,studentswillnotdisturbanyrehearsalin

progress.5. Studentsarepermittedtousethemusiclibrarytelephonewithdirectorpermissionaslongasitrelatesto

schoolbusiness.6. Studentswillrespectthepropertyofothers.7. Studentswillnotenterthedirectors'officeswithoutpermission.Studentsshouldenterthebandoffice

throughthemainofficedoor,notthroughthelibrary.8. StudentsshouldNOTenterthebandsuitethroughBandHall2,unlessgivenpermissionbyadirector.9. Thecopymachineisofflimitsfromallstudentsexceptlibrariansandstudentsgivenpermissionbya

director.10. Studentswillnotdefaceormarkonmusicstands,walls,etc.11. Practiceroomsandauxiliaryroomsaredesignatedforpracticing,notforsocialgatherings.12. Studentsnotcurrentlyenrolledinbandshouldnotbeinthebandhallareaorinthebandstands

areaduringfootballgamesunlessinvitedtodosobyadirector.Ifstudentswhoarenotenrolledinbandwanderintothebandarea,pleasebringtheirpresencetotheattentionofthebandstaff.

13. Studentsshouldkeeptheirequipmentinthedesignatedstoragearea,andkeepsaidstorageareacleanandneatinappearance.Studentswhodemonstrategreatdifficultywiththismaylosetheprivilegeofhavingastorageareainthebandhall.Yourlockerisnotyourpersonalpropertyandadirectoratanytimemayremoveanythingundesirablefromyourlockerwiththerepercussionoflosingalllockerprivilegesingeneral.

14. Studentswillutilizetheirassignedstorageslot/lockerforinstrumentcasesduringrehearsals.Cases&Backpacks/otherbagsshouldnotbebroughtintotherehearsalareaorsetupunlessrequestedbyadirector.Inaddition,allinstrumentcasesshouldremainclosedwhenstoredintheirlockers.

SUMMERACTIVITIESNewStudentOrientationCamp(RookieCamp)InMay,acampisheldforallincomingfreshmenornewstudentstotheprogram.Itisatimeforthesestudentstogettoknow the directors and student leaders, become familiar with the high school facilities, learn basic marching andplayingfundamentals,andhaveagoodtime. Theywillreceivethemusicplayedinthestandsduringfootballgames,andwill get an ideaofhow thingswork for summerbandcampand themarching season. By the time this camp isconcluded, these new students will feel like returning band members when summer band camp arrives in lateJuly/earlyAugust.“SpringTraining”CampSpring Training occurs the first week following the end of the school year (end of May/Beginning of June) and isMANDATORYforallbandandcolorguardstudents.Specificdaysandtimesareannouncedneartheendoftheschoolyear.DuringSpringTraining,studentsbeginrehearsingnextyear’smarchingbandprogram,aswellasworkonbasicmovementandmarchingfundamentals.InstrumentsDuringSpringTrainingandthesummerworkingdays,marchinginstrumentswillbeissuedtoallstudentswhoneedtouseschool-ownedinstruments.

RequiredSLTWorkdays Aspartoftheirresponsibilities,allstudentleadersagreetoattendworksessionsinthesummeratthebandhall.Timewillbespentoninstructingnewbandmembers,preparingmusicforthefall,facilitypreparation,readyingofuniforms,musicandmarchinginstrumentsforissuance,generalpreparationforsummerbandcamp,teambuildingexercises,andgoal setting for the year. Although there are some “impromptu”work days, all REQUIREDwork dayswill be on thecalendar that is distributed after SLT audition results are announced in the spring. In addition, Librarians andUniformCoordinatorswillberequiredtoservemultipleprepdaysthroughoutthesummer.SummerBandCampSummer Band Campwill start onMonday the firstweek of August. Attendance isREQUIRED of all band studentsunlesstheHeadDirectorapprovesanabsence. Thedatesareannouncedasmuchasayear inadvanceforreturningbandmembers,andatleast3-4monthsfornewstudentstogivefamiliesanopportunitytoplanvacations.Campbeginspromptlyatadesignatedtimeeveryday(thismeansthestudent is inplace,readytogoatappropriatetime,not justarriving)andfinishes in theafternoon. Teacher in-servicedatesmaysometimesrequiresomeeveningrehearsals.Studentsalternatepracticingoutsideonthepracticefield(parkinglot)andinsidethebandhall.Studentsmust bring a personal camelback for water. Great care is taken to prevent heat-related problems. A detailedhandoutissenttoeachstudentinearlyJulyoutliningspecificdatesandtimes,whattobring,wear,eat,etc.,butsomegeneralrulesfollow.

a) HatsandsunscreenareREQUIREDoutsideduringsummerband.Saveyourskin!b) Wearlightcolored,athleticclothing(shorts,t-shirts).JeansandpantsareNOTacceptable.c) Wearsocksandathleticshoes(crosstrainersorrunningshoesarethebestexampleofproperfootwear).No

sandals,bare feet,high-tops, ill-fitting,ornon-athleticshoes, includingconverseandsliponsneakers.Duetothe physical nature of our activity, and that themajority of ourmovement will be done on a hard asphaltsurface,properfootwearisanecessitytoreducetheriskofinjuryandstrainonyourbody.

d) Bringagoodlunch,highincarbohydratesandfruit,lowinfat.Youwillhavetheopportunitytoleavecampusforaboutanhourforlunchsolongasyoureturnontime.

e) AcamelbakisREQUIREDforoutdoorrehearsals,butdon'tletothersuseit.Keepitonlyforyourself.WatershouldbetheONLYdrinkduringrehearsals.

Duringsummerbandcamp,studentswillworkonmarching fundamentals,marchingdrillandmusic for the fall fieldproduction.Theywillalsolearnplayingfundamentals,practicestandtunesforfootballgames,andstillmanagetohavesomefun!Therewillbeatleastonepartyheldduringsummerband.Duringthecamp,weworkveryhard,asthereisalottogetdonebeforeschoolstarts,butthereisalsoatimeforfun,andwewillworkveryhardatthataswell!UniformsMarchinguniformswillbeissuedduringthesummerbandcamps. Themarchinguniformconsistsofajacket,gloves,blacksocks(notankleorshortsocks),onepairofblackpants(bibbers),ashako,shakobox,twoplumes(onewhite,onedovegray),twosetsofgauntlets(onewhite,oneblue/dovegray),twobaldrics(onemirrorinsert,oneLoboinsert)andotheruniformpartsthatarespecifictothefallshow,includingadditionaluniformattachments,baldrics,etc. Asheetwillbeincludedinthesummerbandcamppacketindicatingtherequirementsandfinancialobligationsregardingtheuniform.ConcertformalsandtuxedoswillbeissuedinNovember,formembersoftheWindEnsemble,andwillfollowthesameproceduresasbelow.Oncecheckedoutbythestudent,theuniformbecomestheresponsibilityofthatstudent. Itmustbehungandstoredproperlyandkeptcleanatalltimes.Whennotbeingworn,theuniformshouldbestoredintheuniformroomatschool.Atnotimeshouldauniformbeleftinacar,thestudent’sbandlocker,ortakenhome,unlessdirectorapproved.RequiredBandClothingOrdersandmeasurementsaretakenforthoseclothingaccessoriesthatarerequiredforstudentsthroughouttheyear,includingt-shirts,shoes,gloves,summerbanduniforms,etc. Someoftheseitemsdonotneedtobepurchasedeveryyear.SpecificinstructionswillbeprovidedinthesummerbandpacketmailedinlateJuneorearlyJuly.

FIELDSEASON(MARCHINGBAND)TheLehmanBandaspirestoberecognizedamongthetop6Abandsinthestate.Thisdoesnotcomeautomatically.Itisthe result of long hours of very hard work, at school, on the practice field, and at home. Each member of thisorganization is responsible for learning andmemorizing an 8-minutemarching show and a rigorousmusical score.Studentsareresponsibleforperformingallcomponentsbymemoryatallcompetitionsandmustbeabletomarcheachmeasureofmusictoitsspecificchart,i.e.,chart#3isfor16steps/countsandincludesmeasures48-64.Eachstudentwillberesponsibleforhis/hermarching“spot”,andwillreceiveasetofprintedmusic.Eachstudentwillreceiveasetofcoordinatesheetsthatarespecifictotheirchartingnumber.Itisthestudents’responsibilitytoretrieveandreturntheirsheetstotheirsquadleaderonadailybasis.Varsity(Competitive)MarchingBandPositions

PrimaryMarchers(“A’s”)Studentswhoearnapositioninthemarchingbandwillcarrythedesignationofprimarymarcher.Aprimarymarcherisevaluatedonthefollowing:

a) GradeHistory(Eligibility)b) PlayingAbility(BandAuditionPlacement)c) MarchingAbility(SpringTrainingVisualAssessment)d) Attendancee) Attitudef) Previoushistoryinallabovelistedareas.

Secondary(Alternates)Marchers(“B’s”)AnystudentwhoisasecondarymarcherwillSHAREapositionwithaprimarymarcher.Secondarymarcherswillparticipateatallrehearsals,footballgamesandpublicperformances,andmaybeutilizedinareassuchasfieldpreparationandclearance,percussionandelectroniclogistics,etc.Thepositionofsecondarymarcherwillbeutilizedforthosestudentswhodisplaydifficultyinmeetingthecriteriaofaprimarymarcherincludingbutnotlimitedtoattendance,preparation,attitude,playing,marching,andmovementability.

JuniorVarsityMarchingBandPositions

Studentswhohavebeenassignedtothe“JV”MarchingBandparticipateinALLMarchingbandperformances,includingfootballgamesandcontests. However,JVstudentswillhaveareducedrehearsalschedulethatwillfocusonmusicandmarchingfundamentals,aswellasour“FUN”show,standstunes,anddanceteamtunesforeachfootballgame.JVStudentswillhavemultipleopportunitiestoperformassessmentstogainplacementasanalternateintheVarsityMarchingBand.

ATTENDANCEPOLICYInordertohaveandmaintainahighqualitybandprogram,attendancefromallmembersisessential.Inadditiontodistrictandschoolpolicies,thefollowingguidelinesoutlineattendanceproceduresfortheLehmanBand.Theseattendanceguidelinesalsoapplytoactivitiesheldoutsideoftheschoolday.BandCalendarToassistBandmembersinplanningandscheduling,themonthlyBandcalendarwillbepostedintheBandHallandwillalsobegiventoeverybandmember.Inaddition,parentsandstudentscangotothewww.loboband.orgorwww.charmsoffice.com(seetheCHARMSlogininformation)toseethecalendaratanytime.Bandmemberswillbegivenadvancenoticeofanychangesinthemonthlycalendar.BandmembersaresolelyresponsibleforbeingfamiliarwiththecalendarandattendingallscheduledBandfunctions.BecausetheLoboBandfunctionsasa“team”andcountsoneverymember,eachmember’spromptattendanceatallBandfunctionsiscrucialtothesuccessoftheBand.EachBandmemberisresponsibletobeintherequiredlocation,

AbsenceStudentsnotpresentattheappropriatetimemaybemarkedabsent.Studentsareresponsibleforanynewmateriallearnedorrehearsedwhiletheywereabsent,andmayneedtospendadditionaltimeontheirownbeforeorafterschoolinordertofulfillanylearningobjectivesmissedduringtheabsence.Amember’swork/employment,clubmeetings,orotherrehearsalsareNOTanexcuseforabsencefromortardinesstoaBandfunction.Electivedoctor’sappointmentsaretobescheduledattimesotherthanwhenthebandhasrehearsal.Inaddition,familyeventsandbirthdaycelebrationsofANYKINDareNOTexcusedabsences.Thenatureoftheactivityissuchthatnoamountofindividualeffortcansubstituteforgroupparticipation.Anyabsence,whetherduetoillnessorothercircumstance,isimpossibletomakeup.Therefore,studentswhomissrehearsalrepeatedly,regardlessofthereason,compromisetheprogressofthegroupandcannotbeallowedtocontinuetoparticipateinaprimarycapacity.

AnymemberwhomayhaveaproblemattendingaBandfunctionmustcontactaBanddirectorINADVANCEtosatisfactorilyresolvetheproblemortoarrangeforanexpectedabsenceortardytobeexcused.Ifyourabsenceisunexcuseditwillaffectyourparticipationgradeandmayresultinthelossofyourmarchingspot/concertchair.Ifyouareabsentfromtworehearsalsconsecutively,andalternatewillbeplacedinyourmarchingspot.Ineithercaseyoumayhavetheopportunitytochallengebackintoyourmarchingspotorconcertchair.ExcusedAbsenceAbsenceswillbeexcusedatthediscretionofthedirectors.Appointments,tutorials,otherclubmeetings,etc.willNOTbeanexcuseforanabsence.Absenceduetopersonalillnessrequiringmedicalattention,deathinthefamily,orotherextenuatingcircumstances(approvedbydirector)maybeconsideredforexcusedstatus.Studentswhoarecontinuallyillmayberequiredtoprovideadoctor’snotereleasingthemfromparticipationinordertoensurethewell-beingofthechildandtoreduceconcernsofthebanddirectors.Ifindoubt,anabsenceshouldbecheckedwithadirector.Specialnote:Duringmarchingbandseason,morningrehearsalswillendat8am,givingstudentsampletimetoattendtutorialsfrom8:20am-8:40ameveryday.Studentshavemostafternoonsfreeduringthemarchingbandseason.Theseafternoonsshouldbeusedforappointmentsandroutineprofessionalvisits.Inaddition,duringtheconcertseason,studentswillgenerallyberesponsibleforaweeklysectionrehearsalandafullensemblerehearsal.Thus,studentswillhaveampledaysavailablefortutorialsandappointments.UnexcusedAbsenceStudentswhohaveanunexcusedabsencewillreceivea“0”participationgradefortherehearsalandmaybesubjecttooneormoreofthefollowingconsequencesatthediscretionofthedirectors:

*Studentswhohavebeenabsentfortworehearsals(ormore)inanyweek,ormissedalongeveningrehearsal,willbeexpectedtoparticipateatthatweek’sgame,butwillnotbeallowedtoperformatthenextperformance.Studentsmustbeatthefinalrun-thrubeforeaperformanceinordertoparticipateinthatperformance.WeatherMarchingbandisanoutdoorsport.Half-timeshowsandmarchingcompetitionsareheldregardlessoftheweather,asarerehearsals.Ifonemustperformininclementweather,onemustlearnhowtodoso.Theoneexceptiontothisruleisviolentweather,whichincludeslightning,hail,andviolentwind.Intheeventofviolentweather,rehearsals,sportingeventsandcompetitionsarefirsthaltedandeveryonebroughtinsideofthebuilding(HaysCISDprovidesa“WeatherAlert”systemtoallDistrictBandDirectorsandCoachesthatwillautomaticallynotifyusviacellphonewhenalightningstrikehasoccurred.Thisalertsystemallowsustoensurethesafetyofthestudentsatalltimes).Ifthestormpassesinareasonableamountoftime,therehearsaloreventcontinuesafterdangerhaspassed.Inveryrareinstances,aneventmaybecanceled,butthatisanextremelyrareoccurrenceduetotheimpossibilityofrescheduling.Students should always be prepared for rehearsal in inclementweather. 7. Studentswillremaininthebandseatingsectionatalltimesduringthegame.Waterwillbeprovidedbythebandboosterorganization.Studentswillrefrainfromacceptingfoodordrinksfromparents,relatives,orfriends.

11. Studentswillrefrainfromplayingtheirinstrumentsonanindividualbasis.Thebandwillperformasagrouporwithapprovedsmallensembles.

12. Attheappropriatetime,thebandwillbedismissedfromthestandsforthehalf-timeperformance.Atthistime,thebandmustmovequickly,quietly,andefficientlytosectionprepareasandawaitinstructionsfromDirectorsorSLT’s.

13. Attheconclusionofthehalf-timeperformance,studentswillreturntothestandsandcontinueinthestandperformancethroughouttheremainderofthegame.

14. Priortotheendofthegame,theappropriateloadingcrewwillbeginloadingtruckinpreparationfordeparture.

15. Attheconclusionofthegame,studentswillloadtheirinstrumentandbusquickly andefficiently.16. Uponreturntothebandhall,studentswillinsurethatallpersonalitems,

TravelGuidelines/BusBehaviorThisprogramspendsafairamountoftimeonbusses;therefore,thebehaviorofallparticipantsshouldbesuchthatitensuresthateveryonewillhaveasafe,comfortable,andenjoyabletrip.

1. Studentsmusttraveltoeventsandreturnfromeventsonthebus.Anystudentwishingtoarriveorleavewithhis/herparent,mustnotifyadirectorinwritingpriortotheevent.Adecisionwillberenderedbasedonthecircumstancesprovided.

2. Studentsmusthaveallnecessaryformscompletedandreturned,totravelonanytripwiththeband.

3. Studentsmustfollowtheappropriatebusbehavioraslistedbelow:

InstrumentLoading/UnloadingStudentsplayingclarinetorflutewilltransporttheirinstrumentsonthebus.Allotherswillkeeptheirequipmentonthebandtrailer/instrumenttruck.Studentswillberesponsibleforseeingthattheirinstrumentoremptycaseisintheproperlocation.Studentswillalsoberesponsibletoseethattheirinstrumentispickedupandstoredcorrectlyupontheunloadingoftheinstrumenttruck.Studentswhodisplaydifficultyinfollowingtheloadingandunloadingproceduresmaylosetheprivilegeofutilizingtheinstrumenttruckandmaysharetheirseatonthebuswiththeirinstrument.

LoadingProceduresTheLogisticsCoordinatorwilldesignatetheappropriateareaforallinstruments.Studentsshouldinsurethattheirinstrumentisintheproperplaceatthepropertime.Casesshouldbeclosedandsecure.Instrumentsinthewrongareamaybeoverlookedandnotloaded.

UnloadingProceduresTheLogisticsCoordinatorwilldesignatetheunloadingarea.Studentsshoulduncasethereinstrumentandplacetheemptycasebackonthecart.Unloadingshouldbedoneinatimelyefficientmanner.

MarchingBandUniformGuidelines

IndividualCompetitionIndividual competition at the district level is encouraged of all Lehmanband students. Competition for individualstudentsisprovidedbytheTexasMusicEducatorsAssociation(TMEA).Eachsummer,threeetudesareselectedforeach concert instrument. An etude is a technical study designed to teach the techniques, dynamics, rhythm, andinterpretationcontainedwithinashort,well-definedpieceofmusic.Therearetypicallytwofast,technicalpieces,andoneslow,interpretivepiece.Intensepreparationofthismusicaccomplishestwothings:a) It provides instruction on the capability of the instrument, the technique and interpretation of that

instrument’smusic,somemusichistory,andtofurthertheplayingabilityofthestudent.b) It servesasauditionmusic foraseriesof competitiveeventsused toselect the topmusicians in thedistrict,

region,areaandstate.Studentsreceivetremendousself-satisfactionandacclamationforprogressingthroughtheseauditions,beingselectedfortheAll-District,RegionandAreaBands,andculminatingwithbeingnamedtoanAll-Stategroup.

All-RegionJazzBand.ThisauditionoccursinlateSeptember.Thismusicisavailabletoanystudentwhowishestomakethiseffort.Thereareseveraljazzpieces,plusthestudentisrequiredtoimprovise.Thiscompetitionisopentosaxophone,trumpet,trombone,percussion,andrhythmsection.

All-Region Orchestra. This competition is set up like the band auditions, except that some instruments are not

represented in an orchestra. Students selected to the All-Region Orchestra attend a clinic and perform aconcert inmid-November. Students receive a patch, and automatically progress to the All-Area auditions,whichisforbothbandandorchestrastudents.

All-District/RegionBand. Studentsparticipating in these auditions are scoredby apanel of five judges,whoare

screenedoff fromview. Agroupofstudents,allplaying thesame instrument,areallocatedtoaroom,and

eachofthethreeetudesareplayed.Ofthefivescores,thehighestandlowestscoresarethrownout,andthethree remaining scores are averaged for that student’s score. Roughly the top25%scoring students fromtheseauditionsarenamedAll-Regionand/orAll-Districtmusicians.All-Districtstudentsreceiveapatch.Thedistrictbanddoesnotperformasagroup.

All-AreaBand.ThisisthelastofthecompetitiveauditionsintheselectionofAll-Statemusicians.Thiscompetitionis

heldinearlyJanuary,andincludes4AstudentsfromAreaD.ItalsoincludesthosestudentswhowerenamedtotheAll-RegionOrchestra.Basedonthiscompetition,thetopscoringstudentsineachinstrumentgrouparenamedtoAll-State.

All-StateBand. ThisisthehighestindividualaccomplishmentforastudentmusicianinthestateofTexas.TheAll-

Statemusicians attend theTMEA State Convention in SanAntonio in early February for a three-day clinicfollowed by a concert that is attended by topmusic educators from throughout the state and around theworld.UponarrivalinSanAntonio,All-Statestudentshaveonelastaudition,duringwhichtheyarerankedbyscore. Thisservesnotonlyastheirstateranking,butdetermineswhichall-stategrouptheywillworkwithandperformduring thenext threedays.Thereare fourperforminggroups forbandstudents, theAll-StateConcert Band, the All-State Philharmonic Orchestra, the All-State Symphonic Band, and the All-StateSymphonicOrchestra.

UILRegionSoloandEnsembleCompetitionCompetitionforsoloandensemble,bothregionalandstate,issponsoredbyUIL.ThiseventisrequiredforallWindEnsemblemembers and encouraged for all band students. Studentsmayperform inup to twoevents, either twosolosondifferent instruments, twoensembles,oroneofeach. Theregionalcompetition isheld inFebruary. Eachstudentreceivesahandoutpriortoregisteringthatoutlinestheresponsibilitiesofthestudent.Uponsigningthis,thestudentagreestoupholdtheseresponsibilities.Failuretoperformafterbeingregisteredwillresultinagradepenaltyaswellasfinancialcompensationforyourentryfee.Oncethedeadlineispassedforselectingapiece,thepiececannotbechangedforanyreason.Additionally,ifanaccompanist has already been engaged and has prepared the music, the student will have to pay the entireaccompanistfee,whetherthepieceisperformedornot.

SolosStudentsmayselectasolofortheirinstrumentfromashortlistchosenbyadirectorortheirprivatelessonteacher.These pieces must be on the UIL Prescribed Music List (located in the Band Office). Most solos require anaccompanist,which the student pays for half of the cost. The BandOffice assists in locating accompanists and inschedulingrehearsalandcontesttimes.Forthefeepaidtotheaccompanist,thestudentshouldreceiveatleasttwo15minuterehearsalsandthecontesttime.Studentsshouldrefertotherequirementsofthebandinwhichtheyplaytodeterminewhatoptionstheyhaveforthiscontest.Studentsmaynotplayasoloorensembletheyhavealreadyplayedbefore.InordertoqualifyforStateSoloandEnsemblecompetition,astudentmustreceiveaDivisionIonaClassIsoloplayedfrommemoryattheregionallevel.StudentswhoplayaClassIsolowiththemusiccancompeteatregion;however,theywillnotqualifyforstatecompetition.

EnsemblesThere aremany combinations of ensembles that studentsmay elect to perform, from trios, quartets, quintets, andchoirs of the same instrument, to a variety of ensembles of mixed instruments. Ensembles do not have to bememorized,eitherattheregionorstatelevel.ToqualifyforStateSoloandEnsemblecompetition,theensemblemustreceiveaDivisionIonaClassIensemble.IfasoloistorensembleisunabletoattendtheofficialUILcompetitiondate,thesoloistorensemblemustperformforjudgesatLehmanHighSchoolonthedatespecified.

TexasStateSoloandEnsembleCompetition(TSSEC)ThestatecompetitionisheldonMemorialDayweekend,usuallyafterthelastdayofschoolandgraduation.

Studentsmay,butdonothavetoplaythesamesoloorensembleforbothregionalandstatecompetition.However,thetypeofensemblemustremainthesame,i.e.,asaxophonequartetplayingatregioncannotchangeandbecomeasaxophone trioat state. Itmust remainaquartet. Additionally,at the timeof statecompetition,anensemblemayreplaceup to50%of theoriginalmembers, but at least 50%of theoriginalmembersmust remain, i.e. a triomayreplaceonemember,aquartetmayreplace2members,etc.

EachstudentreceivesahandoutpriortoregisteringthatoutlinestheresponsibilitiesofboththestudentandtheBandOffice.Uponsigningthis,thestudentagreestoupholdtheseresponsibilities.

TheBandOfficewillcompletethepaperworkforenteringstudentsinTSSEC,butstudentsmustpayallfeestoregisterfor this contest. Once the deadline is passed for selecting a piece, the piece cannot be changed for any reason.Additionally,ifanaccompanisthasalreadybeenengagedandhaspreparedthemusic,thestudentwillhavetopaytheaccompanistfee,whetherthepieceisperformedornot.Allsolosmustbememorizedforthestatecompetition.

CONCERTSEASON

Performance/RehearsalRequirementsfortheConcertEnsemblesThe concert program is the heart of any successful band program. During this time, the focus is on the musicalenrichmentofthestudentsonavarietyofstylesofmusic.Thiscreatesaplatformformusicmakingtooccurthroughthefundamentaldevelopmentoftone,technique,readingandlisteningskills. Althoughconcertseasonandmarchingseasonformtwodistinctpartsofouryear,bothworkhandinhandtodevelopaholisticapproachtomusiceducation.Eachoftheconcertensembleswillperformatvarioustimesthroughouttheschoolyear.Studentsareexpectedtoparticipateintheperformancesoftheirassignedensemble.Failuretoparticipateineitherrehearsalsorperformanceswillresultinstudentremovalfromtheorganizationatthediscretionofthebanddirectors.(Seegeneralattendancepolices.)

Concertsareconsideredtohavethreeparts:warm-up,performance,andlistening.Theconcertbeginsforthestudentatthewarm-up.Punctualityisessential.Aconcertconcludeswhenthelastgroupperformsanddirectorshavegivenpermissionforstudentstobedismissed.Ageneralreporttimewillbegivenforallstudents.

SectionalsandOutsideRehearsalsStudentswillhaveaweeklysectionrehearsalforthefundamentalsofinstrumenttechnique,regionmusicpreparation,soloandensemblepreparation,andUILconcertandsight-reading.Theseareseparatefromallotherrehearsals.

Studentsareexpectedtobepunctualandpreparedonaweekbyweekbasis.Absencefromsectionrehearsalsmustbeinaccordancewiththeattendancepolicy.Studentsmustmakeeveryefforttoattend.Sectionrehearsalsareanextensionoftheclassroomandaregradedaccordingly.Again,attendanceisMANDATORYnotonlytobesuccessful,buttoalsoparticipateinperformanceopportunities.

UILConcertandSight-ReadingContestAllbandsparticipateinatleastoneconcertcompetitionduringthespringsemester.TheprimarycontestistheUILConcertandSight-readingContest,heldatoneoftheschoolsinourregion.Thiscontestistheessentialbarometerbywhichmusicprogramsaremeasured.ThecontestoccursinAprilorearlyMay,andstudentsmayberequiredtomisssomepartof theschoolday. Thiswillbeconsideredanexcusedabsenceandstudentsareresponsible forallworkmissed.

Thereisaconcertportionandasight-readingportiontothisannualcontest. Eachportionisjudgedseparately,butequally.Eachband’sconcertprogramconsistsofthreeprescribedpieces,oneofwhichisamarch,andtheothertwoareselectedbythedirectorfromtheUILPrescribedMusicList.Musicisperformedforthreeadjudicatorsforarating.Thesight-readingportiondemonstratesthestudent’sbasicfundamentalsofmusicknowledge.Studentsapplyalltheirskillsastheylearnandperformapieceofmusictheyhaveneverseenbeforeforthreejudges.Parents, family and friends are encouraged to attend the concert portion of the contest. This provides a positiveaudienceforourstudents,whichisveryimportant.Thereisnoadmissionfee.Thiscontestismandatoryforalleligiblestudents.Amajorgradewillbegiventothesestudentsforthisperformance.

Eligibility

1. Manybandactivitiesaredesignatedbythestateasextra-curricular.Theseactivitiesarethereforegovernedbythestatelawsregardingparticipation.Thestatelawissuchthatastudentshallbesuspendedfromparticipationinallextra-curricularactivitiessponsoredorsanctionedbytheschooldistrictduringthegradingperiodfollowingagradereportingperiodinwhichthestudentreceivedagradelowerthanseventyinanyoneclass.However,thestudentmaynotbesuspendedfromparticipationduringtheperiodinwhichschoolisrecessedforthesummer.Also,studentsarenotsuspendedforpracticeorrehearsalofextra-curricularactivities.ALLstudentswhobecomeAcademicallyIneligibleareREQUIREDtoattendtutoring.AcademicProgressSheetsandTutoringLogswillbedistributedtothosestudentswhoareREQUIREDtoattendtutoring.

2. Studentsmayregaineligibilityundercertaincircumstances.Ifastudenthasbeensuspendedasaresultof

failing,he/shemayregaineligibilitybypassingALLcoursesinthethirdweekoftheaffectedgradingperiod.Thus,hemayregaineligibilityattheconclusionofthesuspensionperiod.Thestudentsmayalsoregaineligibilitythroughtheprocessofgettingawaiver.Therearespecialcircumstances–seeadirectorformoreinformation.RegainingeligibilitydoesNOTguaranteeregainingaperformancespotoropportunity.

3. Bandactivitiesaredesignatedbythestateasco-curricular.Theseactivitiesarethosewhichoccuron

campus,andareanaturalextensionofthelearningtakenplaceintheclassroom.ExamplesofthistypeofactivityarethepublicconcertswhicharepresentedattheHaysCISDPerformingArtsCenter.Theseactivitiesarenotgovernedbythestateeligibilitylaw.

Fund-RaisingEachstudentcanparticipateinmultiplefund-raisersasamemberoftheband. Theyarehighlyencouragedtotakeadvantageofthefund-raisersasitcantakefinancialburdenoffofeachfamily.AllfundraisingprofitswillbeplacedintotheirownIndividualStudentAccount. TheLehmanHighSchoolBandBoosterClubengagesinseveralfundraisingactivitieseachyear.ThemoniesraisedfromfundraisingactivitieswillbecreditedtoanaccountheldbytheBoosterClub.Thismoneywillbeusedsolelyforthedirectbenefitofthestudents.Moneyinfundraisingaccountsissubjecttostatelawregardingthecollectionofsalestax,andcannotbetransferredtoanotherstudentunlessitisasiblingwithinthebandprogram.Astudentmayusethemoneyinhis/heraccountforthefollowingbandexpenses:

BecausetheaboveconstitutesthevastmajorityofcostsassociatedwiththeBand,thesearetheonlyexpensestowhichfund-raisingprofitscanbeapplied.Moneyfromfundraisingisbylawthepropertyoftheschooldistrict,andcannotbetransferredfromonestudenttoanother.Astudentwhoendstheschoolyearwithanaccountbalancemaycarrythatbalanceovertothenextyear.Upongraduation,ifastudentstillcarriesabalanceinhisorheraccountitwillbetransferredintothebandgeneralactivityfund.

parentswhocanverifytheneed.LehmanBandCodeofConductAsamemberoftheLehmanBand,individualswillrepresenttheentirebandprogram,theschool,thecommunityandeachofourfamilies. Theappearanceandbehaviorofeachbandmembershouldreflectprideinthefinereputationthatisgrowinginthisorganizationandthestartofatraditionofexcellenceinthisprogram.Bandmembersmust firstabidebyall rulesandregulationssetout forLehmanHighSchoolandHaysCISD. Theserules,togetherwithalllawssetoutbythestateandfederalgovernmentssupersedeanyrulesandregulationssetoutbythisprogram.Violationsofdistrict,county,stateandfederalrulesandlawswillbehandledbyappropriatepersonsoutsidethebandprogram,beginningwiththestudent’sAssistantPrincipal.HaysCISDhasazero-tolerancepolicyfortobacco,alcohol,controlledsubstances,weaponsofanykind,gang-relatedactivities,andviolationofstateandfederallaws.Inkeepingwithdistrictpolicies,theLehmanBandalsomaintainsazero-toleranceforanyandalloftheseactivities. Thisprogramtakesgreatprideinthequalityofstudentsinvolved,andforourstudents,wedemandthattheenvironmentinwhichtheyspendagreatdealoftheirtimemustbeonethatissafeandintheirbestinterest.TheLehmanBandexpectsthatallof itsstudentswillexhibit thosebehaviorsthataremostconducivetoapleasantandproductiveworkingenvironment.Thesebehaviorsinclude:• Demonstratingcourtesyandrespectforothers.• Showproper conduct at all times. Displays of profanity, temper, flagrant violation of rules, etc.,will not be

banddirector’sdiscretion.Internet&SocialMediaMaintainingahigherstandardofconductwillalsoincludeensuringthatbandmemberwebsitesareappropriate.Theinternetisaworldwide,publiclyaccessibleformofcommunication.AnycommunicationsuchasMySpace,Facebook,photosharing,emailing,ortexting,etc.,appearingontheinternetispublicdomain,evenifitismarkedprivate.Membersareresponsiblefortheirpersonalwebsitesandpostings,aswellaspostingfromoronotherstudents’websites.Theareasofappropriatenesswillincludebutarenotlimitedtoprofane,foul,ordisrespectfullanguage(abbreviatedoralludingto),pictures,suggestiveposes,clothing,referencestoalcohol,drugs,and/ortobacco,andpostings(eitherverbalorphotos)thatcouldbeinterpretedasbeingnegativeorthreateningtowardsotherHaysCISD

• Uponconfirmationofafirstviolation,thememberwillbeaskedtoremoveanyoffensiveitemsfromthewebsite(s)andwillbeaskedtogiveanapologyandplanofactiontodeterthisbehaviortotheprincipal,directors,andbandmembers.Parents/guardianswillbecontactedandmadeawareoftheoffensivebehavior.

• Uponconfirmationofasecondoffense,thememberwillbeaskedtoremoveanyoffensiveitemsfromthewebsite(s)andwillbeaskedtogiveanapologyandplanofactiontodeterthisbehaviortotheprincipal,directors,andbandmembers.Parents/guardianswillbecontactedandmadeawareoftheoffensivebehavior.Inaddition,thestudentwillbesuspendedfromallBandactivities.

PERFORMANCEGUIDELINESANDEXPECTEDBEHAVIOR

PerformanceAttendanceBand&ColorGuardarePERFOMANCEbasedclasses.Performancesareanextensionofourclassroomandaregradedactivities.Allstudentsarerequiredtoparticipateinallperformances,includingallFootballGames,Contests,Concerts,Pre-UIL/UILevents,aswellasclinicsand festivalperformancesduringandafterschoolhours.Failure toattendmayresultinremovalfromtheprogramatthediscretionofthebanddirectors(seegeneralattendancepoliciesabove).PerformanceBehaviorAfterarrivingattheperformancesite,membersshould:a) Listencarefullyforinstructionsastogettingdressed,unloading,etc.b) Departthebusesinamaturefashion.c) Donot run, sit on thegroundor curbs, engage inhorseplay, shouting, leanagainstwallsor vehicles, etc. in

ordertoprotectyouruniform.d) Remainfocused,quiet,andalwayslistenforinstructions.e) Unload your instrument from your cart quickly and in an organized fashion. Return your case to the

appropriatecartneatly.f) Movetofinalinspectionsite.

BehaviorAroundOtherBandsIt should always be remembered that every band with whom we compete has also put in hundreds of hours ofrehearsalandpreparationtime,andwhereaswecompetewiththeseotherschoolsonaregularbasis,wealsohavemuchincommon.Thereareafewrulestorememberwheninassociationwithotherperformingbands.a) Whenoutsideoftheperformancearea,showpolitenessandrespectforallotherbandmembers,regardlessof

wheretheyarefrom.Overtime,youwillcometoknowstudentsfromotherschools,anditisnicetobeabletovisitwiththem.

b) In thepre-performancearea, there isnoopportunity for socializing. Whenapproachingor leaving thegate,marchingtoandfromthestadium,goingintothestandsareaorwarm-uparea,membersshouldavoidvisualorverbalcontact.

c) Members should remain silent and attentivewhen other groups are performing, and should avoid visual orverbalcriticismofanysortinpublic.

d) Whenaband finishesaperformance, enthusiastic applauseandacknowledgement is alwaysappropriate,nomatterthelevelofperformance.

e) Parents,friends,andalumnusofthebandshouldstayoutofthebandareainthestandsandshouldstayoutofthepreparationareaforshowsandcompetitions. Thismustbeenforcedbybandmembers. Bandmembersneednodistraction fromtheir focuson the jobathand. Membersshouldnotaccept food,drink,candy,etc.,

GRADINGPOLICYIt is important to remember the mission statement of the Lehman Band and the requirement of each student toparticipateineveryperformanceoftheband.Failuretomeettheperformanceschedulewillresultinaseriousgradereduction.Atthebeginningofeachsemester,eachdirectorwillhandoutguidelinesthatwilltellthestudentshowgradeswillbedetermined. Any studentmay check on their grade at any time during the grading period simply by arranging ameeting with their director and asking about their grades. Students are encouraged to take responsibility forunderstandinghowtheyaregradedandthestatusoftheirgradeatanygivenpointintime.Whilegradingparameterswillchangefromthefallsemestertothespringsemester,someofthemajorgradingcategoriesmayinclude:MusicProficiencies/PassoffsEachstudentisrequiredtoperformtheirmusicusingsmartmusicinadesignatedmusiccomputerlab.Thiswillbetrue of all marching music; some stand tunes, and all concert music, whether for local performance or concertcompetition.Studentsmayberequiredtopass-offothertechnicalexercisesfromtimetotime,suchasscales,warm-ups,etc.Studentswillbeassessedandgradedbasedonthefollowing:a) Articulations,dynamics,styleandphrasing.b) Characteristictonequalityandbreathsupport.c) Proficiencyofcorrectnotesandrhythms.d) Abilitytoplayinpulsewithametronome.Somemusicplaysoffswillbegradedbyahighly innovatemusicprogramcalledSmartMusic. Theprogramwillrecord thestudentplaying,giveagradebasedoffofaccuracy,makea recordingandsend therecordingand thegradetotheirbanddirector.Eachstudentwillhaveaoneweektimeframetopassofftheirmusicandcanre-playtheirmusicforahighergradebeforeorafterschool.**MarchingBand:Anystudentwhodoesnotcompletemusicpassoffsmaynotbeallowedtoperform,ormaybeaskedtomarchwithouttheirinstrument..

SectionalsAttendanceisREQUIREDatallsectionals.Sectionalsareheldonemorningorafterschooleachweekaftermarchingseasonandduring theSpring foreach instrumentgroup, i.e., clarinets together, trumpets together,etc. Gradesaregivenforattendance,preparationofthemusic,andclassparticipation,includingattitude.Studentsaregradedatthesesectionalsonattendanceandpreparation.ClassParticipationThegradeassignedtoclassparticipationincludespreparationofmusic(indicatedbyoutsidepractice),presenceofallclassmaterials,positiveattitude,attendance,andimprovementasaresultofinstruction.Otherparametersmayaffectastudent’sgrade,butthesewillbeoutlinedeachsemesterinclass,eitherbyhandoutorpostedontheboardintheBandHall.

INSTRUMENTS

TheSchoolDistrictwillprovidealimitednumberofinstrumentsforstudentuse.TheseinstrumentsincludesuchhighlyexpensiveinstrumentsastheBassoon,Oboe,TenorSaxophone,BaritoneSaxophone,FrenchHorn,Euphonium,Tuba,andgeneralPercussionequipment.Thisequipmentisgenerallypurchasedbytheschooldistrictforstudentusebecauseofitsextremelyhighvalue.Thus,allschoolownedequipmentmustbehandledwithoptimumcare.Studentsfailingtocarefor,ortakecareoftheirschoolissuedinstrumentwilllosetheprivilegetousesuchinstruments.Thefollowingisalistofgeneralproceduresforschoolownedinstruments:

1. Ifatallpossible,studentswillbeissuedoneinstrumentforhomeuseandoneforschooluse.Orderofdistributionwillbedonebasedonchairorder.

2. TheSchoolDistrictdoesnotprovideinsuranceforindividuallyorschoolownedequipment.Itisrequiredofallstudentsutilizingschoolownedinstrumentstoprovideinsurancecoverageforthesaidinstrument.Studentswillbeheldresponsibleforschoolownedinstrumentsissuedtothem.Thisresponsibilitywillincludefire,theft,accidentaldamage,abuseandgeneralmaintenancenotincurredthroughnormaluse.

3. Studentsandparentsmustsignaninstrumentcheck-outformbeforetheinstrumentcanbeusedbythestudent.

4. Eachinstrumentwillbeissuedingoodplayingcondition.Eachissuedinstrumentwillbecheckedandcleanedpriortoissue.Studentsareexpectedtomaintaintheirissuedinstrumentsaccordingly.

5. Thebandmemberisfinanciallyresponsibleforallequipmentand/ormaterialscheckedouttohimorher.

6. Allequipmentandmaterialsmustbekeptintheirproperstoragelocationwhennotinuse.

7. TheSchoolDistrictwillassessafeeforroutinecleaningandmaintenanceofschooldistrictownedinstruments,generally$50peryear.

LEHMANBANDSTUDENTLEADERSHIPTEAMSectionLeadersandOfficers,togetherwiththeDrumMajors,PercussionandColorGuardCaptain,comprisethe Lehman Band Student Leadership Team. This group of individuals form the pinnacle of studentleadership,andwillplayalargeroleinthepositivefunctioningandhighmoraleofthisgroup. TheStudentLeadershipTeamisguidedbytheBandDirectors,BandPresident,andDrumMajors.SLT’s will devote a great deal of time outside of rehearsals, sectionals and class time, in order to plan, prepare,organizeandfacilitateprojectstobenefitthebandandthebandstudentsandtoassistthedirectorsandstaff.DonotplanonbeinganSLTifyouareheavilycommittedwithoutsideinvolvements,suchasaheavyworkschedule.IfyoufillanSLTpositionnow,yourtermwillservethroughthe2013-2014schoolyear.SLT’swillworkcloselywiththedirectorsandstaff,andwillserveastheliaisonbetweendirectorsandstudentsformanythings.SLT’sareexpectedtowatchforproblemareas,suggestandimplementsolutions,andtogenerallybeasourceofcreativeideasforimprovingtheprogramandthebandexperience.Inadditiontothespecificofficeduties
