Dean Peggy Heim introduced the speakers. The welcome was from Roberta Marcus, chair of the Board of Trustees, and Dr. Ann Bieber shared remarks on the ceremony.

Student speakers Alicia K. Durst and Nikoleta Kalahanis each addressed the crowd. Dr. Betsy Swope, associate professor of psychology, announced the two Students of the Year, Jennifer Kalenkoski and Rachel Keich. LCCC Graduate Honored Melanie Lantz, a 2007 psychology graduate

of LCCC, was recognized as the College of Education’s researcher of the year at Louisiana Tech University, where Melanie is a full-time faculty in the graduate school.

Business Student Induction Ceremony

Ed Rabinowitz Named Faculty Professional Development Liaison In his position as Faculty Professional Development Liaison, Ed is responsible for working directly

with the Director of Organizational and Faculty Development on faculty professional development and related activities.

Ed will be working throughout the year to coordinate stand-alone workshops, webinars, guest speakers, etc., and will serve on Academic Council representing the Faculty Professional Development Subcommittee. He will also assist in the planning of Fall Convocation and Spring Faculty Development Day.

2017 Faculty Award Recipients The following individuals received faculty awards at the annual staff recognition dinner held May 12.

Stephen Roman, part-time instructor in sociology, was awarded the Adjunct/Part-time Faculty of the Year Award for consistently demonstrating teaching excellence and dedication and commitment to students, faculty and staff. Stephen teaches in social sciences and has taught at all of the college’s sites, as well as within the dual enrollment program. As the northern tier sites were being developed, he took an active role in offering innovative ideas for enrollment and retention, taught needed courses and assisted in community events to raise the college’s visibility. Stephen has been instrumental in the development of the support group for the college’s military veterans, organizing many of the veteran’s day activities.

Holly Morris, professor of biology and coordinator of science, was awarded the Faculty Excellence Award. She is a well-respected leader in the science department and is dedicated to the success of her students, colleagues and the college. Holly teaches a variety of courses and is co-writing the General Biology lab manual for publishing, as well as the genetics lab manual to improve student resources. She is creative and enthusiastic in the classroom and motivates students while also challenging them and holding them to high standards. She has served on numerous committees, has been the Science Division coordinator for 14 years and wrote several of the grants that benefited the science program over the years.

Melanie Turrano, professor of English, received the George W. Elison Faculty Service Award. Melanie uses innovative, creative approaches in her teaching. Her approach meets students’ intellectual and non-cognitive needs, and she isn’t afraid to shake things up with new ideas. She is active in several professional organizations, which help to inform her teaching. Melanie brings energy and enthusiasm to the classroom, while also maintaining high standards. She teaches almost exclusively in Tamaqua and is known among her students as one of the most dedicated teachers they have ever had, a teacher who is respected because she is fair, available, helpful and genuine. She challenges students to think for themselves and to develop intellectual muscle. In addition, Melanie has led the Faculty Association’s negotiating team for the past two contract negotiations.

Mary Rasley, professor of computer science, was awarded the Vice President’s Faculty Recognition Award for going above and beyond her normal work. She dedicated numerous hours of her own time to jointly craft a curriculum for program and project management training to the Information Technology staff. This invaluable training helped staff develop additional skills for a fraction of the cost. Because of her collaboration and support, the benefits to the college will be significant. Her training will enable staff to provide a high level of service, providing significant benefit to LCCC for years to come.

A special presentation was made to business student Tori Lawton, inducted

last spring into KBD, who earned the KBD 2017 Region 2 Merit Scholarship of $1,000. Lawton is pictured with Rachel Plaksa, Dr. Ann Bieber, Dr. Ceil Connelly-Weida and Dr. Tom Meyer.
