1) Clapper Board In this screenshot a clapperboard is used as in a physically produced flm with the ‘slate’ details o inormation such as the directors, the take number, who is on the camera, the date, what scene it is and what flm they are producing. This shot is parodying the conventions o flms, as The Lego ovie is animated and thereore there is no need or a clapper board, etc and is eta through doing so as this displays a sel!r e"e#ive awareness o the te#t as an artifcial construction. 2) Cofee Instruction Board In this screenshot the board is showing the characters in the flm how to purchase co$ee, set out in the same way as a Lego instruction board. 1) Clapper Board

In this screenshot a clapperboard is used as in a physically produced flm with

the ‘slate’ details o inormation such as the directors, the take number, who is

on the camera, the date, what scene it is and what flm they are producing. This

shot is parodying the conventions o flms, as The Lego ovie is animated and

thereore there is no need or a clapper board, etc and is eta through doing so

as this displays a sel!re"e#ive awareness o the te#t as an artifcial construction.

2) Cofee Instruction Board

In this screenshot the board is showing the characters in the flm how to

purchase co$ee, set out in the same way as a Lego instruction board. This is

eta due to the flm being aware that it is about a product% the te#t has a sel!

re"e#ive awareness that it is an artifcial construction. &urthermore, it is a parody

o the rules enorced on us in everyday lie! suggesting that we are merely a

piece in the game o an institution! the purpose o this is to criti'ueconsumerism, capitalist oppression and social conormity, however, there is a

parado#ical nature to this as The Lego ovie itsel is an advert or two

multinational corporations The Lego (roup and )arner *ros. +ntertainment.

3) The Uniorm Trac

ere you can see the uniorm tra-c on the Lego streets in the flm, with all the

cars moving in unison. This is once again a parody o reality, with the purpose o

it being to criti'ue social conormity, consumerism and the capitalist oppression

that we live by, re"ected by the oppressive rules o resident *usiness. /nce

again there is a parado# here due to the same reasons as mentioned previously.

4) Batman Strikin the !ate Control "#irst Time$

In this shot *atman throws things to try and hit the button to open the gate

control many times, and when we fnally succeeds he comments that he did it

‘frst time’ to comedic e$ect. +vidently, through using a character rom other

genres0mediums such as *atman the te#t creates a bricolage, makes an

interte#tual reerence and subse'uently urther makes it eta as it is displaying

that it has a sel!re"e#ive awareness that it is an artifcial construction. In a way,

you could also iner that this is a parody o *atman as they take *atman’sseriousness as i he were in a 1olan flm and put it into the arcical conte#t o the

Lego ovie, making him a pastiche and a simulacrum 2as he is not 'uite the

*atman the audience knows, he is mocked3 almost. There is an ironic distance

between *atman’s seriousness and the character’s actual absurdity. *atman’s

actions here could also be criti'uing the genres that he is a part o normally,

pointing out how unrealistic they are with his skilul actions within them.

&urthermore, to have *atman fghting against 4apitalist oppression is once more

parado#ical due to him being a character produced and used by a large,

capitalist organisation! 54 4omics, Inc., a subsidiary o )arner *ros.

%) The &icro &anaers 'escendin rom the Sk(

In this scene the icro anagers descend rom the sky down into the streets in

order to ree6e the Lego characters in position so that they must conorm to the

capitalist oppression o Lord *usiness. This scene makes an interte#tual

reerence to The atri# as the icro anagers are similar to the 7gents in it, who

all look the same and stop the people rom escaping the atri#. This

conse'uently has a bricolage e$ect and urther makes the te#t eta, as it has asel!re"e#ive awareness that it is an artifcial construction. &urthermore, it acts a

criti'ue o capitalist oppression and subse'uently creates a parado# as spoken

about previously.

) *iam +eeson as Bad Cop

Liam 1eeson’s character 2(ood 4op0*ad 4op3 has two sides to him when

interrogating +mmet% he turns rom (ood 4op to *ad 4op. This makes an

interte#tual reerence to the psychological tactic used in interrogation andnegotiation in reality, and to the stock character (ood 4op0*ad 4op, urther

creating a bricolage and eta e$ect. It also parodies this character and makes a

pastiche o it by presenting him as comical and arcical. The point o this

character is to once again display to the audience that the te#t has a sel!

re"e#ive awareness that it is an artifcial construction.

,) &oran #reeman as

-itru.ious

In this shot organ &reeman’s

character 8itruvious is displayed holding his magical stick. is character makes

an interte#tual reerence to (andal rom The Lord o the 9ings, creating a

bricolage and eta e$ect! making the audience once again aware that the te#t

has a sel!re"e#ive awareness that it is an artifcial construction. In a way this

reerence to (andal can be seen as a homage to his character, however, it can

also been perceived as a parody and a pastiche due to the arcical conte#t he is

placed in and his comedic portrayal. erhaps this can be seen as a criti'ue o

the typical seriousness in the antasy genre by subverting the (andal!style

character into something more comical.
