Legionella in ‘Other Risk Systems’ACOP L8 states that a Legionella Risk Assessment should be ‘suitable and sufficient’ which in general terms is taken to mean that anywhere on a premises that uses or stores water should be included in the risk assessment. Aside from the usual domestic water services and evaporative cooling systems a brief mention is made in the guidance about ‘other risk systems’.

Legionella in ‘Other Risk Systems’‘Other Risk Systems’ can be classified as anything that

meets chain of events allowing proliferation and dissemination of Legionella bacteria and could include;

• Water features / irrigation systems

• Humidifiers

• Emergency showers

Legionella in ‘Other Risk Systems’Over recent years a number of ‘high risk, other risk systems’ have come to light and triggered the release of additional technical guidance or guidance notes from either the HSE or industry professionals such as the Water Management Society.

A good example of this is aqueous tunnel washers, often found in white goods and vehicle manufacturing facilities, used to de grease and pre treat components prior to them being painted.




Legionella in ‘Other Risk Systems’Up until an outbreak at the JCB factory in 2008, this was a previously unknown source of bacteria and sparked a raft of additional recommendations for routine sampling and water treatment. Similarly, a number of instances prompted some additional guidance to be circulated regarding the operation of vehicle / car washes.




Legionella in ‘Other Risk Systems’If you already have a comprehensive risk assessment

in place, any such systems will have been highlighted a regime suggested. If in any doubt, ask yourself are there any water processes (domestic or industrial) where the following conditions may be present;

• Water temperature in the range 20oC to 45oC

• The presence of nutrients such as sludge, scale and rust

• Water stagnation

• Potential for creation of an aerosol




Legionella in ‘Other Risk Systems’If so, these should form an integral part of the assessment and ongoing management programme. However, whilst it is relatively simple to identify these processes, the amount of information available to determine what precautions are necessary is very limited.
