July 2016
Welcome Legion Baseball Players, Families, Friends & Fans:
Thank you for coming to Le Sueur/Henderson for the 2016 Minnesota
Division II State Legion Baseball Tournament. Win or lose we hope you
find your weekend here will be an enjoyable experience. As Mayor of
the City of Le Sueur, I have the honor of extending the official welcome
from our town to all of you.
Le Sueur, located in the beautiful Minnesota River Valley, is a small
town that likes to think big. Thanks to a history and tradition of diverse
commercial, industrial and agricultural investments and proud involved
residents with high expectations, Le Sueur enjoys many of the features
found only in much larger communities. Be sure to drive around and
look us over between games.
Ever since the Minnesota Twins opened their new outdoor stadium and
left the Metrodome, it never rains on baseball games in Minnesota. No
guarantees but, expect great weather and quality baseball for your tour-
nament here in the Valley.
Thank you for coming and making the tournament a success. Best of
Luck to all the teams.
Lets Play Ball!
Sincerely,
Bob Broeder, Mayor
City of Le Sueur
July 2016
I bring you greetings from the 83,000 members of
the Minnesota American Legion.
American Legion Baseball has a proud tradition in
Minnesota, going back 87 years. This year we will
have over 300 teams in our state with over 5,000
participants. We are the largest state program in the
nation by number of teams, and our state tourna-
ments are the largest in the nation. Despite our cold-
weather reputation, Minnesota has won the Ameri-
can Legion World Series three times in the last 15 years, and has finished
second two other times.
My theme for the year is working together. As Americans, we are grate-
ful to live in a country where we have baseball, but also our basic free-
doms and our democratic process. Many veterans sacrificed part of their
lives, or their entire life to protect our American way.
I want to congratulate the teams that are here. You are the best of the
best, and I know you will represent your hometowns well. I want to
thank the coaches and post members for the countless hours they put in. I
want to thank the local volunteers for putting on this outstanding tourna-
ment.
Baseball is America’s pastime. There’s no sport quite like it, especially
on a beautiful summer day. Enjoy these games, and remember the veter-
ans whose sacrifice made it all possible.
For God and Country,
Jim Kellogg
Commander
Department of Minnesota

MINNESOTASTATEBASEBALLTOURNAMENT There are so many people and groups who made this weekend possible. We have to thank both the Hen-derson and Le Sueur Baseball Association’s for all their work in promoting baseball in our communities and making it possible to have a successful baseball program. We have one of the finest baseball fields in Minnesota, in Bruce Frank field in Le Sueur, but it takes a lot of work to maintain it and continually improve it. The Hilltop Field just ten years ago was a junior varsity field in disrepair, thanks to the Henderson Baseball Association the field is greatly improved and now home to the Henderson Tiger amateur baseball team. We would like to thank the cities of Le Sueur and Henderson and the Le Sueur-Henderson School District for their help in maintaining the fields. This tournament would not have been possible without the financial support of a small group of support-ers. A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO:TheFriendlyConfinesCheeseShoppe,RossNesbitAgencies,Del’sConstruction,BartelsTrucking,PizzaRanchandMapleLeafGraphics. Thanks to the Henderson and Le Sueur American Legion Posts for co-sponsoring this year’s tournament and a special thanks to the Henderson Lions Club for sponsoring our legion baseball team. Thank you everyone – have a great weekend – from the committee co-chairs

“In this city on July 17, 1925, by action of the South Dakota Department of The American Legion, the nation-wide organization of Legion Junior Baseball was first proposed as a program of service to the youth of America.” Those words are inscribed on a marble monument in the community of Milbank, South Dakota as a reminder of the beginning of this fine Americanism program. The program’s years of existence can be explained best by a portion of that inscription: “A program of service to the youth of America.” Since its beginning, over ten million young men have played Legion Baseball. American Legion Baseball be-came a National program by convention action in 1925, and the first National Tournament was held in 1926. Only 16 states were represented in this first year of national operation. In 1928, Mr. Dan Sowers, the Director of the Na-tional Americanism Commission, appeared before the Executive Council of Baseball in Chicago, which agreed to underwrite the national program up to $50,000. With the exception of two years, the Major Leagues have continu-ally supported American Legion Baseball. Major League Baseball continues to make a financial contribution each year. During the 1929 season, every state entered teams into competition. Nineteen thirty-one marked the first appearance in championship play of a player who was later to become a big-league great. Kirby Higbe hurled a complete game for Columbia, South Carolina, and lost the final game in the 14th inning, 1-0. Ten years later, he was the National League’s top pitcher. Nineteen-forty and 1941 marked the years that American Legion Baseball became an established national institution for American youth. During the war years, the program was restricted but continued its service to our nation’s youngsters. The post-war years saw the continued growth of the program and the nation’s realization of the importance of this type of activity for boys of all age groups. In 1949, the selection of an American Legion Player of the Year was originated. This was arranged through the cooperation of Mr. Robert Quinn, Director of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. The sixties saw the program grow stronger under the leadership of George W. Rulon, Program Coordinator for American Legion Baseball, who held that post from 1961 until 1987. Upon his retirement, The American Legion Player of the Year Award was renamed the George W. Rulon Player of the Year in honor of the late Program Coordinator.
A Brief History of American Legion Baseball in America
The seventies saw three more national awards estab-lished by the National Americanism Commission. The Dr. Irvin L. (Click) Cowger RBI award, Rawlings Big Stick Award, and the Bob Feller pitching awards were established based on players’ statistics in Regional and World Series Tournaments. In 1982, the National Americanism Commission adopted the eight-site, eight team, double elimination Re-gional Tournament format. Sixty-four of the best teams in the country begin National competition at the Regionals. In 1998, The American Legion established a national baseball scholarship. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to each participating Department. A total of $116,000 is awarded over the past few years to outstanding American Legion Baseball players based upon leadership, character, scholarship and financial need. The Quaker Oats Company, makers of Gatorade® an-nually contributes $10,000 towards scholarships to help us honor Eight Regional Players of the Year as well as The American Legion Player of the Year. Over 97,000 players, ages 15 to 19, participated in 2008. Since 1925 over 10 million young people have played American Legion Baseball. Since 1985, over 1,900 new teams have registered to play American Legion Baseball. Local American Legion Posts also support and sponsor some 2,500 younger-age teams who are registered with Little League, Babe Ruth, Pony, Dixie as well as many other youth sports teams such as soccer, bowling, hockey, etc. On an average, 52 percent of Major League Baseball players played American Legion Baseball as teenagers. Nearly 75 percent of all college players played American Legion Baseball as teenagers. Over 50 American Legion Baseball graduates have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Since 1926, Major League Baseball has honored The American Legion World Series Champions at the Major League World Series. The Commissioner’s Office annu-ally presents a plaque to The American Legion champions on the field at The Major League World Series. The 2008 National Championship team, from Las Vegas attended the Major League Baseball world Series and was presented the Commissioner’s Award by Jimmy Lee Solomon, Sr. Vice President of Major League Baseball. This season marks the 82nd Anniversary of competition in the program. Its pur-pose continues to be in 2016 the same as was in 1925, “An investment in America’s Youth.” The history of American Legion Baseball has proven that America’s youth receive on the baseball diamond a thorough understanding of the true value of sportsmanship, leadership and individual character building.

Proud Sponsor of the2016 American Legion
Minnesota State Tournament
The Le Sueur-Henderson Giants 2002 American Legion State Championship Team was a story of perseverance and redemption. The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers had ended the LS-H High School baseball season in 2000 and 2001. In 2002, this team of predominately seniors, looked to turn the tables in the Section 2AA Tournament. The Giants went 3-0 in the playoffs before facing the Bucs, only to lose by a score of 3-1. After defeating Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 7-1, the Giants needed to defeat Blue Earth twice to claim the Section Title. Darron Culbert and Trevor Schultz, the ace and #2 respectively for the Giants were rested and ready. Trouble hit the Giants early in the form of a batted ball back to the pitcher. The ball spun off of Culbert’s glove towards his pitching hand, slicing off a piece of his index finger. The stream of blood showed no sign of letting up, so Culbert gave way to Schultz. The Giants won that game with a score of 2-0, but ran out of pitching in the latter contest, losing the Championship Game 6-1. When I saw that Blue Earth was on the other side of the bracket for the Legion State Tournament, held in Willmar that year, I knew our goal was to get to that game for another shot at the Giants rival. After defeating Sebeka 9-3 and St. Charles 7-2, the Giants had their date with Blue Earth for the American Legion State Tournament. They would face staff ace Lee Hodges, the pitcher
2002 State Championshipwho defeated them twice in the High School Sections, who had also pitched five innings the day before. I went with our #3 pitcher, Zach Johnson, as I had done all season. Blue Earth came out swinging, scoring one in the first, four in the second and two more in the third off Johnson to take a com-manding 7-0 lead. Culbert came on to pitch after seven solid innings the day before, to try to hold the Bucs at bay. Our team was down emotionally, but not out of the contest. They exploded for nine runs in the top of the fourth, five of which were charged to Hodges. The big blow came off the bat of Aaron Jerdee, a three run double that gave the Giants their first lead at 8-7. As the Giants added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh, making it 12-7, Culbert shut down the BEA attack, allowing just one hit in the final 4 and a third innings. The team got their revenge on Blue Earth, and captured a State Championship in the process. It was truly a magical finish to a spectacular season, one that saw these players compile a record of 47-6, counting both High School and American Legion Baseball.

Keenan Family Fifty years ago when Emmett Keenan re-started the American Legion Baseball program in Le Sueur, he couldn’t even dream of the day when there would be a ballpark like Bruce Frank Field, let alone hosting a State and Regional Tournament. It is a tribute to everyone who has coached, played, shagged balls, given rides to away games, sold concessions, served as board members, mended pants, sewed on Legion patches, made sandwiches for visiting teams, umpired, pre-pared the field or just simply watched a game in Le Sueur. The family of Emmett and Irene Keenan want to con-gratulate and thank everyone who has supported baseball in Le Sueur and Henderson over the last fifty years and offer a special thanks to Post 74 in Henderson, Post 55 in Le Sueur, the Henderson Lions Club and the Le Sueur Baseball Asso-ciation for their recent and ongoing support of the American Legion Program. Emmett and Irene are looking down on us today and saying “atta-boy- you done good.”

Bruce Frank Field, site of this year’s Minnesota Division II State American Legion Baseball Tourna-ment was named for Mr. Bruce Frank. Bruce was a long-time football coach and Athletic Director, as well as a baseball and basketball coach. The field has been named in his honor since his retirement in the late 1980s. The field however, has been the home of Le Sueur baseball since 1947. After the Second World War when the veterans returned home, there were two amateur teams in town, The Merchants and the Farmers. They played many memorable games be-fore large crowds and a successful fund raising effort brought a new park onto the existing site, complete with a grandstand and lights. The park has seen many changes over the years. In the early 1950s infield grass was installed and in the 1970s volunteers replaced the canvas outfield fence with chain link, the grandstand was condemned and
Bruce Frank Fieldreplaced by the Community Center next to the field. The 1980s brought a new set of lights to the park and the 1990s saw a new grandstand erected, a new set of dugouts built and a new scoreboard installed. When the football field was built in 1998, Bruce Frank Field became a strictly ‘baseball only’ facility and the bat-ter’s eye and current fencing was installed. The third base dugout was moved back to improve the sight lines from the seating area and a new con-cession stand and storage shed were put up. In April 2005, a press box was built on top of the first base dugout to give the radio announcers a comfortable place to call the game. At least 75 to 80 games of Amateur, High School, American Legion, and seventh- ninth grade baseball are played here each spring and summer. We are proud of the improvements that have been made and look forward to continued improvement while maintaining this excellent facility.

In 1955, Emmett Keenan re-organized the American Legion program in Le Sueur and kept it going until his knees gave out in the mid-’60s. In 1963, the local team made it to the Championship game of the District 3 tournament in Brownton. This was quite an ac-complishment for there was only one class at that time. In 1992, Sibley Post #74 took
over sponsorship of the team. In 1993, Le Sueur-Henderson coached by Lon Berberich and Bruce Hollom appeared in the Division II State Tournament losing to Mountain Lake in Albert Lea. In 1999, Le Sueur-Henderson, coached by Henry Endres, Mike Feeney and Scott Wilson, qualified for the State Division II tournament in Ely. It was a memorable season in that conference rival Mont-gomery-Lonsdale won the High School State Cham-
History of American Legion Baseball In Le Sueur-Henderson
pionship in June. In the District 3 American Legion tournament, played on the Sibley East diamonds, Le Sueur-Henderson defeated that same Montgomery team twice to qualify for the trip to Ely. Three years later, in 2002, Le Sueur-Henderson won the Division II Championship in Willmar, defeat-ing Blue Earth in the finals. This was an especially sweet victory because Blue Earth had defeated Le Sueur-Henderson to claim the Section 2 spot in the High School Tournament. Feeney and Terry Kromin-ga coached the ball club. The following summer Le Sueur-Henderson, coached by Krominga and Rick Dahn, made an-other trip to Ely, losing in the first round. They came back however to win two games and the consolation championship. The team played as the host in the 2005 and 2009 State Tournament and the 2010 and 2015 Central Plains Regional Tournament.
