Legends Ranch

October is here and Fall is just around the corner. There are however, tasks that need to be done now. If you haven’t applied a fungicide yet, apply it now. Cool nights and warm days, will stimulate the spread of lawn fungus. If you start to see yellowing patches in your lawn, “Brown Patch” is the most likely culprit. Apply a fungicide at curative rate to the lawn. If using a granular fungicide, the bag will list on the back both preventative and curative rates of application. Coverage is usually 5,000 sq.ft. at preventative rate and 2,500 sq.ft. at curative rate. Treat the entire lawn as mowing spreads the fungus spores to areas not affected. Do not fertilize for 3 weeks after treatment, as the nitrogen in fertilizer will activate the spread of the fungus.

Now thru early November is the time to fertilize. I recommend a fertilizer with a lower ratio of nitrogen. “Winterizers” will have

a lower ratio of nitrogen and higher ratios of phosphorus and potassium. This will feed the grass without stimulating great amounts of tender green growth. Futhermore, the phosphorus and potassium will strengthen cell walls of the roots to resist freezes.

October and November is the time to apply your preemergence herbicide. This will help control your winter weeds. Remember that preemergents only kill seedlings as they break ground not the

established weeds. Post-emergents can be applied when temperatures are in the mid-80’s.

October is the month to start changing out your annual flowers. Nurseries will have on hand plants for fall, such as Dianthus, Snapdragons, Marigolds and Petunias. Dianthus and Snapdragons will bloom in the Fall and again in the Spring. Petunias will survive a light freeze and continue to bloom. Marigolds bloom heavily in the fall but are killed by the first frost.
