An introduction from Nick KirkUK Managing Director, PageGroup
Welcome to our latest look at the legal sector. As we move further into 2020 and look to the decade ahead, there is little doubt that we are operating in changing times. Change inevitably brings challenges. It also creates huge opportunities.
Take Brexit, for example. Whatever your stance on the invocation of Article 50, there is no doubt that the uncertainty it is creating is having a detrimental impact on the business outlook. However, as historical moments often do, Brexit creates an opportunity for both employers and workers to pause and re-evaluate their intentions and priorities for the months and years ahead. For some it may be a catalyst for change, reinvention and growth.
Brexit may also present an opportunity for businesses to reconsider how they approach the recruitment of top talent. Soft skills such as adaptability are more important than ever – and the sooner employers wise up to the value of having an adaptable workforce, the sooner they will reap the benefits, particularly as the consequences of Brexit become apparent.
Against the political backdrop, the unstoppable march of technology is another driving force of change, as innovations in AI and automation continue to evolve the scope of roles across sectors. This will only accelerate over the next 10 years; indeed, it is exciting to imagine the types of jobs that will have been created by 2030 and the types of skills we will be seeing on CVs as a result. You can see our predictions on that subject by clicking here.
At this juncture, we feel it has never been more important to provide you with the key statistics and information you need to inform your business decisions for the year and decade ahead. That’s why we have put this guide together to offer clear insights in two key areas:
SalariesAlong with giving you the overall picture across the UK, we have also drilled down into the legal sector to derive key insights around salary growth, regional trends and fluctuations based on seniority. Turn to Page 5 for our full salary guide for the legal sector; you can also use our online Salary Benchmarking & Comparison tool to get the latest information on salaries for hundreds of roles.
SkillsCompetition is fierce for a range of skills, within both legal and the broader labour market. Therefore, we have identified the most in-demand skills in the sector for this year and looked at what is driving the overall skills shortage. For further details on the most in-demand skills across the industry, head over to our online Skills Checker tool.
Having operated for over 40 years as recruiters, we are at the coalface of employment and have an unrivalled knowledge of the challenges around salaries and skills. As your needs evolve, our flexible team – based in offices across the UK – are uniquely positioned to help find the right talent in order to meet your business objectives.
On behalf of PageGroup in the UK, I hope you enjoy the read.

Technical skills in huge demandSkills shortages, particularly across technical roles, continue to be felt across the UK. This was one of the key battlegrounds of last year’s general election, with the CBI questioning whether the Conservatives’ points-based immigration system could lead to further skills shortages post-Brexit. The CBI has urged the Government to make adult training a priority as one way to close the skills gap. Meanwhile, the British Chambers of Commerce has called for an increase in funding for apprenticeships, and reform of the Apprenticeship Levy, to particularly benefit SMEs.
The UK outlook

Wage growth slowing downThe rate of employment hit a record high in 2019, whilst workers’ wages also continued to increase – albeit, there was a slowdown in the second half of the year. The rate of salary growth has trended upwards since spring 2017, reaching 3.9% in May to July 2019, the highest nominal pay growth rate since 2008. This dipped to 3.6% in the second half of the year, with the rate of employment also falling, with Brexit-related market uncertainty being blamed by analysts. At the same time, unemployment also continued to fall, dipping by 23,000 to 1.31m in November.
Annual growth in total pay for UK employees is ahead of inflation.
Average regular pay, before tax and other deductions, estimated at £508 per week.

Average earnings growth is over
3% for all sectors except manufacturing.

With newly qualified private practice salaries continuing to rise to unprecedented levels whilst some in-house businesses still struggle to justify meaningful increases to their legal team’s base, the national legal salary divide has never been greater. It is virtually impossible to pinpoint a standardised “market rate” without taking into account the nature of the organisation, the skill set on demand, the location, and total packages.
Lifestyle choices, career advancement options and job satisfaction are more critical considerations than they have ever been. As such it is the firms and organisations that find the right balance across all measures that are ultimately the most successful in attracting and retaining their legal professionals.

Bonuses and benefits packages. It is so important that Employers recognise the importance of the wider benefits package in this competitive landscape. Candidates are increasingly concerned about the broader provisions that can often close the gap on basic pay. Sensible conversations are the key as candidates will not progress within a process without knowing this.- Samantha McGawley, Business Manager
Flexible working. Candidates turn down jobs without flexibility; clients don’t realise how important this is to people. In the regions, this is now an expectation from candidates at least once or twice a week.
- Conor Farrell, Manager
D&I – clients should wear their heart on their sleeve about this. Can they give us the PR around what they are doing so we can sell this to a candidate? Being open about your diversity agenda is crucial to attract top talent.
- Anna Cox, Business Manager

Given that scrutiny and stringency are the name of the game in legal, it is perhaps unsurprising that the sector has been preparing for all ramifications of Brexit for some time. Skills around adaptability and planning will therefore continue to be key.

VersatilityProfessionals should be versatile with all the changes that are happening in the legal industry and the new model that firms are starting to adopt. At a time of accelerating change, those that are not adaptable to changing technologies, pricing, and market competition, will find it harder to compete further down the line.
Those wishing to enter law with a 2:1 or a 1st from a Russell Group University tend to secure the paralegal roles at the top city firms. A strong academic background (e.g. As/Bs at A Level) is essential in most cases and helps in securing paralegal and training contract roles. It should be noted that academic excellence is referred to throughout a lawyers’ career. At every level of seniority, a qualified lawyers’ degree classification, and indeed A(S)/B Levels, will be scrutinised.
Academic Excellence
Market knowledgeSuccess in this sector is about much more than solid account management and keeping existing clients happy. It is also important to know what else is going on in the market and reacting to opportunities to uncover new potential revenue streams.
A strong network is an ever-important element of a career in the legal profession and the best way to build this is through exposure to colleagues. The more you collaborate with different areas of the business, the more varied your work will be and the further you will be able to expand your skill set.
Collaboration
Individuals who possess commercial acumen often adopt a pragmatic mindset. This involves identifying, and then balancing, opportunities and threats through analysing trends and checking on what the competition is doing. Your tolerance to risk can largely shape your level of commercial acumen.
Commercial acumen
In order to remain competitive within the legal world, upskilling is vital. Throughout one’s career, legal professionals must be actively identifying & pursuing new development areas both from professional development and a technical perspective. This ensures that individuals maintain relevance within the market as well as a commitment to their own success.
Proactively upskilling
Competing priorities can become overwhelming if you are not able to assess your workload and tackle the most pressing issues first. The skill of prioritisation ties in closely with commercial acumen and communication.
Prioritisation
The picture in legal: in-house
Whilst making the right decisions in the here and now is always important, it also pays to have one eye on the future, both as a business and an individual. On an individual basis, it is important to continually future-proof your skill set to ensure you are ready to take advantage of opportunities.
Future-proofingStakeholder management is about much more than developing a wide network of contacts. It means having the ability to communicate effectively and ensuring that the right decisions are made when there is a fork in the road.
Stakeholder influencing
ResilienceWith the job market getting more and more competitive year on year, resilience is key in first securing the right role. Online competency-based tests are becoming more prevalent and the general job environment is becoming increasingly competitive.
