LEGAL ENGLISH WORKSHOP

by Prof. Mario González-Hernández

WHY A LEGAL ENGLISH WORKSHOPThe world is becoming smaller as we step into a new era. Lawyers have always played a vital role in every society. In a way, we, law-yers, shape institutions that govern everyone’s life. Knowledge trav-els almost as fast as light and the notion of an interdependent world is already a reality. Back in the time of the Roman Empire, Latin was the language that people would be expected to speak. Nowadays, English has earned such a position, like no other language before it. Just on the Internet, there are twenty times as much information in English than there is available in Spanish. Therefore, a legal profes-sional who speaks Spanish as a native language should soon be-come interested in learning and improving his or her English as a

second language. Despite the fact that there are very respected in-stitutions providing ESL resources and school-instruction, there is still room for solutions to help lawyers become familiar with special-ized terminology and a deeper understanding of other legal sys-tems. This workshop is an effort to bring a new perspective and ex-pertise to the new generation of lawyers. One that is based on lan-guage as a platform but on law itself as the learning vehicle. We hope that you find in this program a window to new ways of develop-ing your career. In this website you will find information and re-sources that you can apply throughout your training and beyond.

Our legal knowledge expands as the world becomes smaller.

All that I know is all what I’ve learned, but all what I’ve learned is not all that there is to know.

What the workshop is about.

The  Legal English Workshop is a 12-year-old practical seminar  designed by professor  Mario González-Hernandez. This course has been thought to provide ESL law  students with advanced   learn-ing resources so that they become more confident in the use of English as a Sec-ond Language within a legal context.

The course covers a wide range of activi-ties and topics which shall provide par-ticipants with practical knowledge on relevant grammar points and legal termi-nology. The workshop is divided into  twenty chapters.

Learning Approach

This program is not a lecture-oriented course. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Students are the core of each lesson. Practice, practice, practice is the motto of our method. People learn by doing and not just by listening. That is why, the workshop is full of individual and group exercises. Many of them contain self-evaluation methods so that students per-sonally keep track of their own learning progress. The instructor is always there to assist students on their performance and provides participants with continuos feedback.

Level of English Required

This course is open to anyone who has completed a regular “ESL” course (“English as a Second Lan-guage”). While an intermediate level of English may be enough, it is important to mention that stu-dents must be fluent in order to really take the best of the Legal English Workshop.

On the other hand, students are not expected to already know legal terminology since this is pre-cisely one of the main objectives of the program. The first class, the instructor will ask participants to perform a preliminary test in order to determine how to begin the course.

Resources

Technology also plays a very important role at our workshop. We use a platform called Canvas-Instructure  in order to organize and deliver our ma-terials. This platform is tremendously easy to use even in mobile devices. It is also important to men-tion that our website has a Blog that is often used by the teacher in order to share all sorts of extra materials that can help students practice before, during and after they take the Legal English Work-shop.

Participation Diploma

At the end of the course, you may obtain a diploma and a letter from prof. Mario González-Hernandez in order to keep record of your participation in our training program. This diploma is not an official

document from a public authority and can only be used for private curriculum vitae purposes.

Schedule

The full Legal English Workshop is usually a 4-week intensive program given almost every month of the year from Jan 15 to Dec 15. The academic and professional activities of our academic staff re-quire law firms and universities to apply for the course at least two weeks in advance. There are times of the year where you may wait up to 2 or 3 months in order to have the workshop be given in your city.

Legal English Workshop (On-Site)

The on-site workshop comprises a daily 120-minute live session for a period of four weeks. This makes a 20-lesson program which is enhanced with additional materials and online resources for participants to continue their individual learning path. This workshop is usually given at our offices in Guadalajara or at Law School campuses. The Live-Instruction Workshop may be given to regular-size group (10 to 20 participants) or to a small group (4 to 8 participants).

Legal English Workshop (Online)

In 2008, we started to deliver the Legal English Workshop to lawyers from different cities across Mexico through a powerful Internet-based platform. Today, in 2013, we offer a very solid program which includes all of the Workshop Chapters divided into 4 modules. Students receive one-one live-

instruction through Canvas-Instructure, Wiziq & Skype. The online version of our program is the best choice for lawyers who are willing to receive a more personalized teaching attention at more flexi-ble hours. This program is given to individuals or to small groups (3 to 5 participants) even here in the city of Guadalajara.

Customized Programs

After completion of our regular Legal English Work-shop, participants can take a customized exten-sion of our workshop on the legal areas they want to continue practicing. These workshop extensions have similar fees.
