LEGACY OF LOVE | 32 | CASA TERESA ANNUAL REPORT 2019
ABOUT
CASA TERESA
To provide pregnant women in crisis a loving home to begin their healing journey.
Love...simple and yet so powerful. At Casa Teresa our tagline is “home with a heart” and it is because
we truly welcome the pregnant women who walk through our doors and we love them. We become
their family, we meet them where they are without judgment, we build trust and we walk alongside
them in their healing journey.
Our co-founder Sally Sullivan wanted each woman to feel loved and become the mother God intended
her to be. She was called to be reunited with her beloved husband Neill and join our Heavenly Father
earlier this year. We are grateful for and committed to continuing her legacy of love.
Thank YOU for generously giving from your heart this past year to support the 148 women, children
and babies that we served. We could not carry out our mission without YOU! We see the impact of
your philanthropy every day as the women courageously make transformational changes to break the
generational cycles of abuse and addiction.
The women, children and babies are blessed by your love and support and we are so grateful!

To break cycles, transform women and help families thrive through effective, caring residential programs.
LEGACY OF LOVE | 54 | CASA TERESA ANNUAL REPORT 2019
THE JOURNEY:
CASA TERESA’S PROGRAMSOur five residential programs provide shelter and other basic needs, case management, classes, and
supportive services for pregnant women/new mothers and their children. We are committed to meeting
women wherever they are on their journey and giving them the support they need to get back on the
road to a bright future for themselves and their families. Our alumni program ensures that all members of
the Casa Teresa family, past and present, have the resources they need to stay the course and thrive.
RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS EMERGENCY MATERNITY SHELTER (EMS)We provide a safe place for the most vulnerable
women in severe crisis—often chronically
homeless, struggling with addiction, and/or
mental health challenges—to address safety,
health, and basic needs.
PARENTING PROGRAMThe Parenting Program helps pregnant women
without resources take their first steps toward a
healthy future from when they enter the program
through two months post delivery.
TRANSFORMATION 1 PROGRAM (T1)Mothers continue to receive supportive services,
while moving closer to self-sufficiency by attending
school and/or working full-time. They also learn
how to care for their babies and become great
moms in T1.
TRANSFORMATION 2 PROGRAM (T2)At this point on the path, mothers are mostly
self-reliant and are preparing to transition their
families to stable housing. They may also reunite
with any children previously placed in the care
of others, building family stability and breaking
dysfunctional cycles.
HANNAH’S HOUSEHannah’s House supports women who choose to
relinquish their baby for adoption, providing a safe
space to meet the physical and emotional needs
of women as they select an adoptive family.
ALUMNI SERVICES Casa Teresa’s love and support doesn’t come
with an expiration date. As our moms continue
on their way to healthy futures with their families,
we are always available with services, case
management, classes, and encouragement—
ensuring that even if they stumble, our moms
have the resources they need to stay on the right
path and break the cycles of poverty, addiction,
and homelessness for the next generation.
EDUCATION When a resident comes to our organization we
assess their education background and needs
based on their future career goals. We start by
making sure each woman has completed their
high school education and if not, we enroll
them in a program to complete this, preferably
before they give birth. We also help with college
enrollment, job experience and placements
utilizing on our partnerships within the community.
This program is a huge part of their success as they
gain confidence and start to make connections
to help them move towards self-reliance.
THE COLLECTION, RESALE STORECasa Teresa has a resale store! Run by staff,
volunteers and residents in a social enterprise
format “The Collection by Casa Teresa” provides
our residents with a unique opportunity to gain
valuable, paid work and customer service
experience. This beautiful shopping experience
boasts fashions for both men and women at
affordable prices. All our items come from
donations and are either new or gently used and
all proceeds go to support Casa Teresa.
Almost 11 years ago I was living in a sober living
house and I found out I was pregnant. With the
father already in jail, I was lost. I found out about
Casa Teresa and gave them a call to setup my
interview. I took the bus to my interview, wondering
if they would accept me. I got off the bus in
Orange and walked past an apartment complex
and thought to myself, “Would I ever be able to
afford something as nice as this?”
Casa Teresa decided to take me in. While living
at Casa Teresa, my mom found out Chapman
University was opening up a Graduate program
in my undergraduate Major of Speech Language
Pathology. I applied to the program and was put
on the waitlist.
After going on maternity leave and not knowing
how I was going to support my child once she was
born, I started to get scared and fell back into old
habits. At eight months pregnant, I found myself
handcuffed and taken to jail. I knew I had two
choices, keep things secret or, for once, be honest
with the people around me and let them help me.
Knowing that I may be jeopardizing my safe place
to live, I made the hardest and best decision of my
life. I told the truth to my parents and to Dr. Pugh
and asked for help. When I told Dr. Pugh, I was
simply told in a loving way, to get my act together.
Two weeks later I gave birth to a healthy little girl,
who I named Eve. Two days after giving birth to
Eve, I got a call from Chapman University and
found out I was accepted into my Graduate
program and a month later I was up for review at
Casa Teresa to see if I would be accepted into the
transition program. To my surprise, I was accepted
into the transition program and then the hard work
really started.
For the next year and a half, with the support of
Casa Teresa, my parents and later my boyfriend, I
was able to go to Graduate school and raise my
daughter with confidence.
As I graduated from Chapman University, I was also
graduating from Casa Teresa and again had to go
through another scary transition. But this time, I was
able to go through it with confidence. Remember
that apartment complex? We moved there. I left
Casa Teresa and moved about 100 feet across
the street. Casa Teresa helped me tremendously
during this time.
One month after moving out, I started my
first professional job as a Speech Language
Pathologist. A few months later, my boyfriend
moved into our apartment. While he is not Eve’s
birth father, he is her Dad. Eve now has a sister,
Juno, who is four years old.
Many people call me a success story from Casa
Teresa. But what do we define success as? Getting
a job? Being drug free? Graduating school? Living
with love? I view myself as a success story from
Casa Teresa because I was able to take the tools
and love that I learned at Casa Teresa and make
a better life for my family and myself.
Thank you to Casa Teresa and those of you who
contribute to Casa Teresa. Because of all of you,
we are able to access an amazing opportunity
that changes both our children and our own lives
in indescribable ways.

OUR FINANCIAL STRENGTH
During this fiscal year we experienced two significant
events that positively impacted our financial stability.
One was closing escrow on our Emergency Maternity
Shelter property which enabled us to pay down our
debts with the proceeds. Additionally, in April, we
received a legacy gift from the estate of Elsie Pierson
in the amount of $450,000 – which has become the
lead gift for our capital campaign.
We are grateful for your continued generosity, year
over year, which allows us to serve the women and
babies at Casa Teresa.

The Ruby Luncheon event features fashions
from our resale store, “The Collection by Casa
Teresa,” and several guest speakers including
a Casa Teresa resident (present or former).
Our 2019 event was located at a new venue,
Newport Beach Country Club, and hosted
a sold out crowd of 274 guests enjoying the
beautiful location, opportunity drawings, lunch
and fashions modeled by board members,
guild members, corporate and service partners,
supporters and volunteers. We are so honored
to share that this event raised over $75,000
which goes directly to fund the program for the
residents at Casa Teresa.

held on Thursday, May 16 at Arroyo Trabuco Golf
Club, marking the 40th year of this event for Casa
Teresa. The day of golf included great food and
fun contests on the holes, followed by a dinner
program including a live and silent auction in
the evening. Guests heard from an alumna on
the impact of Casa Teresa on her life while a
resident and how that changed the course
of her life today. Thank you to all our donors,
sponsors and participants for making this year
a success and supporting the women, children
and babies in the program today. Together we
raised over $115,000 in net proceeds!

GUILD UPDATE TRIBUTE TO
SALLY SULLIVAN
In total, the Central Guild donated in direct funds, purchases, and gift cards over $61,000 to Casa Teresa. This is a 42% increase over the prior year. In addition to funds, our volunteers contributed over
1,961 hours.
We had a full year of events to raise funds, engage new
members and contribute to Casa Teresa both financially
and with our time. This year we participated in local city
events including the Orange Street Fair and the Buena Park
Silverado Days. We hosted member events, including a new
member social in the fall which was a huge success and
monthly bridge games and luncheon! To celebrate the
holidays, we hosted a fun Halloween-themed bingo night
for the members followed by a luncheon at Casa Teresa for
the moms and babies. At our annual Holiday party we gave
Casa Teresa a check for $10,000 and $500 in gift cards.
Two of our biggest events include the Casino Night in
February and the Kentucky Derby Party in May. Together
these events raise a big part of our overall fundraising efforts
as well as engage new and existing members. Make sure to
mark your calendars for both February 8, 2020 for the next
Casino Night and May 2, 2020 for the Kentucky Derby Party.
Beyond events, our members contribute their valuable time
preparing “Welcome Baskets” for the moms, sharing spiritual
devotions at the house through Bible study, as well as
attending board and strategic planning meetings to ensure
our goals are in alignment for the vision of the organization.
2019 marks Founders Guild’s 40th anniversary.
Our guild is in transition to sustain
us into the future. We are honoring
our past while incorporating modern
elements to our group. Fundraising
and member events are moving
from luncheons to evening events.
We are providing more hands on
opportunities for our Guild members
to support Casa Teresa. In addition to
fundraisers, we are taking on drives
to provide layettes and post-partum
kits for new moms. We are also hosting
dinners for residents and parties for
alumni.
In November we hosted a luncheon
with speakers in Newport Beach
and in May, our “creative” event,
was a class on inspirational painted
signs and included one of our most
spectacular auctions. We recreated
our May event as a Mother’s Day
party for the Casa Teresa moms the
following week, providing lunch and
the painting activity for all residents.
TOTAL VOLUNTEER HOURS: 1,500
MEMBERS: 69
BOARD MEMBERS: 10
TOTAL CONTRIBUTION: $23,000
We lost our beloved co-founder, Sally Sullivan, in March of 2019. Sally, who along with her husband Neill, founded Casa Teresa 43 years ago to provide
a home for pregnant women in need.
She found her inner purpose in life and that was to show everyone she encountered that they were
loved. That was especially true at Casa Teresa. Her ability to be so loving and accepting enabled
people from all walks of life to open up and to feel loved. She manifested love because she was love.
Since the beginning, that is how Casa Teresa serves the women, children and babies – with great love
and acceptance. That is Sally’s legacy and what we are committed to continuing.
In honor of Sally and Neill, we are creating the Sullivan Legacy Society. Membership into this group is
for people who have named Casa Teresa in their will, bequest, trust or estate plans. This will assure that
Casa Teresa will serve women and babies as long as there is a need.

A HEART TO GIVE:
PARTNERS
We embarked on a journey to refresh each of the rooms in our 100 year old
building.
Three years ago, Jana Williams, a board member at
the time, embraced this project and transformed the
first room into a place of peace, dignity and healing.
Since then we have had generous donors and creative
individuals transform the remaining 10 rooms. Each
one has its own unique theme and décor.
The impact is best shared through the words of one of
our residents, Siarra.
Hello, my name is Siarra. I am the mother of
Vylette. I have lived at Casa Teresa for 1 year
and 2 months so far. I have been blessed with
the opportunity to graduate from each phase
at Casa Teresa, which transformed my life
drastically. One of the major reasons Casa Teresa
is set apart from other shelters is its tranquil and
calming setting. Being a single parent that has
to work full time to stay afloat isn’t easy. Being a
recovering addict while juggling life clean and
sober is a struggle sometimes too and can stress
me out. But coming home to Casa Teresa, to
the beautiful and serene apartments they have
created, helps soothe my soul and reminds me
that I’m safe and loved.
