Top mass
4TOP-14-002,TOP-14-010, TOP-14-015
We have completed our top mass measurements using both the fully hadronic decays (TOP-14-002) and the fully leptonic ones (TOP-14-010), and produced the final Run 1 combination (TOP-14-015)
• 8 individual results are combined, including dilepton, lepton+jets, and all-hadronic channels, and data from all of “Run 1” (including 2010 data) are included
• The fully leptonic analysis is the first “blind” top mass measurement in CMS
• Precision now at the level of 0.38% !!

Higgs : the final word from CMS
5
With the completion of the “big 5” we have produced a preliminary combination of all results (HIG-14-009), and work continues on the final publication➡The combination was made public concurrently to H→γγ paper
submission and presented for the first time in ICHEP.
𝜇=1.00±0.13mH=125.05±0.30 GeV
Goal: submission by mid-Dec fo final CMS combination paper

Received on June 17th from Nature editorDear Author,
Your paper 'Evidence for the direct decay of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to fermions' has now been scheduled for Advance Online Publication (AOP) on Nature Physics's website on 22 June 2014 at 1800 London time / 1300 US Eastern time, which is when the embargo will lift.
CMS 2015 readiness: executive summary
• Detector:LS1 upgrades and repairs done • Recent ‘surprise’ : BPIX quarter with 47 modules (7% of total BPIX
modules) not responding. Repairs done : reassembling the detector and progressing in understanding causesCausing stress, but not affecting overall ‘ready-for-beam schedule’
• Commissioning and run: DAQ2 and new Timing and Control system (TCDS) deployed and being exercised in regular Mid Week Global Runs. Order for HLT PCs to be replaced being prepared.
• Software& Computing: summer challenge exercise just finished successfully
• Analysis, PHYS14 exercise planned: aim to prepare high priority analysis for speedy results on first 1-5 fb-1

• Strips running at T=-15C; pixel pipes @-20C– final seal and final heater
configuration applied• Outside temperatures all OK• Inside humidities look great
• Next step is to test the sealing with B field on

New reduced Diam. Pipe ready for installation of upgraded pixel in 2017
Pixel• 7% of BPIX modules were found unresponsive
(all in one quadrant) at final checkout time• The other ¾ of the BPIX are OK• The problem is an Ohmic short between wire-bond
pads with highest DV in proximity to SMD components on the High Density Interconnect (HDI) – The shorts look like “whiskers” or “dendrites” which can
be ‘scratched off– Short developed during LS1 (probably: moisture + flux
residue + applied voltage)• All BPIX modules have been repaired/replaced by new
modules as of last week• Plan to have BPIX back at CERN early November
• Consequence: re-optimization of LS1 schedule • We are proceeding now to close the detector
and power the magnet and re-open aiming to install pixels in DecemberOctober 13 , 2014 CKC meeting , T. Camporesi 12

And more …
• New SiPM in outer hadron Calorimeter (done) • New Thin window, multianode PMT in HF (done)• New mTCA readout for HF (deployed)• ECAL endcap repairs, Preshower recommissioned after
dismounting to fix connector power non conformity • Muon barrel Drift tubes: repairs, relocation of sector collectors
in Service cavern, new Theta trigger board (done)• Major upgrades in Beam monitoring ( e.g.new silicon pixel based
lumi monitor ,PLT) in progress• Preparation for trigger upgrade ( optical splitting and so on)

Computing: resources and usage• CMS has consistently used essentially
all the capacity available plus some additional during 2014– Many simultaneous high priority
activities are on-going• Run1 samples, CSA14, upgrade samples
• CMS is systematically low on Tier-1 pledges– Tape is the lowest at -10%
• Tape is a cumulative capacity, the increase for 2015 was 19PB and we are 7PB short in the total
– Relative deficit is large

Heavy ion in 2015
• The Ion Period in Run 2 will be the first high luminosity Pb run in the LHC Ion program
• Projected machine performance– Peak Lumi ~4 1027 cm-2s-1
• 4x LHC design value! – Max. Interaction rate ~30kHz
• 8x 2011 PbPb rate– Integrated lumi:
• 0.8nb-1 if optimized for ALICE (long fills)• Up to 1.5 nb-1 if optimized for CMS/ATLAS (short fills)• Negotiations with LPC ongoing
• Key hardware ingredient to coping with the high interaction rate is the L1 Calorimeter Upgrade
• HLT, Computing, Offline Software, DQM and Reconstruction project areas have been staffed with dedicated HI contact persons and support teams to improve communications with the corresponding CMS pp experts to ensure timely preparations for data takingOctober 13 , 2014 CKC meeting , T. Camporesi 15
Phase 1 upgrades
• Executive summary– Pixel detector to be installed in shutdown 2016-2017:
pre-production of electronics components done, moving to production, assembly sites being qualified, sensors production ongoing
– Trigger: resources loaded planning validated, past milestones achieved in time. Stage 1 on track for usage at startup 2015.
– HCAL: HF PMT, HF mTCA backend, HO SiPMT deployed in LS1 as foreseen. On track for full deployment in LS2
October 13 , 2014 CKC meeting , T. Camporesi 16
Phase 2 Upgrade
• Draft version of Technical proposal discussed with the LHCC: complete detector HW description and preliminary physics performance studies
• In order to properly document physics performance studies using full simulation and HL LHC environment, agreed to submit final version for approval in March 2015
• Improved cost estimate wrt to preliminary RRB document available.

Phase 2 Upgrade: timelines,cost
October 13 , 2014 CKC meeting , T. Camporesi 19
Technical proposal for phae 2 upgrade will be submitted to the April,2015 session of the RRB
Korea and CMS
• We are grateful for the big contribution to the success of the RPC RE4 project
• We are impressed by the growing contribution of Korean colleagues to the Physics program of CMS
• In the last year we have seen a reduction of the EPR ( Experimental Physics Responsibility) tasks contributed with respect to the expected ones: we hope that the future operation budget will allow to correct this
October 13 , 2014 CKC meeting , T. Camporesi 20
The future is bright ( and VERY busy)!
• We have exploited the run1 data : our legacy for the Higgs results is published, the majority of searches analysis are published or being published, Top physics results are beyond expectations, B rare decays an evidence of CMS global performance from trigger to reconstruction.. and more
• We are now concentrating on the preparation for the 2015 run: we will again explore new frontiers
• We have defined the technical proposal for our High Lumi Detector. Next step will be the choice of the forward calorimeter and the preparation of the TDRs
• We have witnessed a clear ramp-up in the quality and quantity of Physics contributions from Korea
• We are starting the process to idenitfy the key actors for the Phase 2 upgrade program and we count on Korea being one of them
