Poslies on Strike!

done if the strike was goingto be successful, and Iwanted to do my bit. It feelsgood to stand up for yourrights, but it doesn't feelgood to have to.

Q: So what is the uniondoing about it?

Q: Did you go on a picketline?

To be honest it was veryearly in the morning in thepissing rain. It's justsomething that had to be

Q: How did it feel to be onthe picket?

and make the routes longerit's going to get worse. Idon't see how they can dothat.

Yeah, only one person whowasn't in managementcrossed our picket line andwent to work during thestrike. There was a deliverydriver who once we spoketo him refused to cross aswell.

There's been a one daystrike so far, and we'regoing out again soon. Atthe moment it's just oneday strikes. I think it's beenquite effective so farbecause the Royal Mail haslost some customers, which shows it's being hit. They've written us all daftletters asking us not tostrike, so they're a bitrattled. But I think we needto go on strike for longer, because as long as it staysone day I don't think peopleare that bothered. The mailstill gets delivered andyou're still doing the sameamount of work but notgetting paid for a day. If wehad a longer strike itwouldn't be possible to getall the mail delivered laterin the week, and peoplewould really sit up and takenotice.

They also want to mergesome of the routes fordelivering the mail, which isjust crazy. The routes arealready hard enough andlong enough as it is, butthey want to squeeze evenmore work. There are rulesabout how much mail youshould carry, but a lot of thetime just now you have tocarry more than that, asotherwise you would haveto go out with one bag, thengo back to the deliveryoffice to get another - itwould take ages. If they try

The work to finish systemjust makes sense, itrespects people. If you'regood and get p~ople's mailto them early then it's fairenough you should get togo home. It's one of the fewperks of the job, which islow paid and hard work. Alot of folk who have workedthere for ages have said tome if they scrap it they'llleave. They say over thelast 10 years it's becominga worse and worse place towork. I think it could end upcosting the company moremoney because that'llmean they'll need morenew people like me whodon't really know whatthey're doing and takelonger to deliver the mail!

you finished at 12 you'd go• back to the sorting office

and do something elseuntil 1. Of course, by thetime you get there it'll behalf 12, then once you'vestarted something elseyou'll be staying longerthan you're paid for, whichis what they want. Theywant to get as much workfrom us for as little moneyas possible.

Following the recentstrike action by RoyalMail staff, we caughtup with Alf Archer,19, a postie andmember of theCommunicationWorkers' UnionQ: What do you do inyour job with the RoyalMail?

Q: What's the strike allabout?

The 2nd thing is Royal Mailwant to change the way themail is delivered. Theywant to get rid of the work-to-finish rule. At themoment you're given a setroute and post to deliver, and if you get it all donebefore your shift finishesthen you can go home, butstill get paid. So if your shiftfinishes at 1 but you getfinished by 12 then you'repaid up to 1. That's the wayit's always been. But thebosses want to make it so if

It's about a few things. Thefirst one is pay: postieshave been offered a payrise which is less than therate of inflation, so in realterms that means a pay cut. We're demanding a payrise that meets inflation.

I work in the delivery officethat covers Glasgow CityCentre. Every morning I goin at 5.30 to help get themail sorted, then head outto deliver it on whateverroute needs covered thatday. I joined the unionwhen I came in because weare in the middle of a bigdispute at the moment andI wanted to support thestrike.

.DELEGATE ZERO?Marcos' writings weredistributed around theworld via the internet, anda huge andunprecedented solidaritycampaign was mobilised.

They launched acampaign to talk toordinary people andradical activists fromacross Mexico and theworld, and begin todevelop a grassrootsmovement for change that

was

indigenous people, landand justice. The rebelscalled themselves theZapatista Army of NationalLiberation, or EZLN.

The rebellion caught theattention of peoplethroughout the worldbecause of thedeclarations and letters ofits spokesman,Subcomandante Marcos.

The EZLN came to be incontrol of an area 0remote territory wherethey were constructinghealth and educationsystems, andimplementing a systemof direct democracywhere everyone in therebel communities wasconsulted on all majordecisions, and theydirectly controlled therebel army. This meantthat the villages werestrong and prepared forthe attack of thegovernment, and wereable to hold out againstall expectations.

Marcos wrote a stream ofdevastating attacks onMexican capitalism andthe dictatorialgovernments thatprotected it, and began tomap out a path forrevolution based on theancient democratic ideasof the Mayan and otherindigenous people ofMexico.

On New Year's day1994, Mexico'srich and American

big business werecelebrating together thelaunch of the NorthAmerican Free TradeAgreement (NAFTA), apact between Mexico, theUS and Canada thatallowed business to movefreely between thecountries and exploitworkers as much as theyliked, but didn't allowworkers the samefreedom.

In Mexico NAFTA alsomeant that the right winggovernment removed poorpeasants rights to theirland that had been won inthe Mexican Revolution of1910. US big businesswas free to buy up theirland and leave the poor tostarve.

But little did Mexico's richand powerful know thatthey were about to face arebellion against theirpolicies that was to shakeMexico, and ultimately theworld.

independent of thecorrupt political partiesand the undemocraticelectoral system.

In 2005 this becamethe 'Other Campaign,' anational campaign for anew way of doingpolitics, a revolutionarymanifesto to build anew Mexico. In Marcos'words, "Together, we'regoing to shake thiscountry up from below, lift it up, and stand it onits head." Declaring

"No to trying to resolvefrom above theproblems of our Nation, but, rather, they mustconstruct FROMBELOW AND FORBELOW an alternativeto neoliberaldestruction, analternative of the left forMexico."

In 2006SubcomandanteMarcos renamedhimself Delegate Zero,

and set out alone andwithout protection on amotorbike to travel thewhole of Mexico, actingas the new movement'sscout, with others tofollow. They say: "Whatwe are going to do isask you how your livesare going, your fight, your thoughts abouthow our country isdoing and about whatwe can do so that theydon't defeat us. Whatwe are going to do islisten to your thoughts, those of the simple andhumble people, andmaybe we will findthere the same lovethat we have for ourcountry."

Already Delegate Zerohas met all kinds ofpeople with manystories to tell, and hashelped begin a processof linking the EZLN intohundreds of differentstruggles by peasants, workers and of thosewho are discriminatedagainst, such aswomen and gaypeople. They took aleading role in buildingsupport for the massrevolutionary struggle

Mexico now is acountry poised on thebrink of revolution, which has hugeimplications for the USwhere so manyMexican migrants live.
