Students will work on strategies to help them achieve their goals in and outside of school. To assist in the setting and achieving of these goals and to focus on how we best learn, we will also be creating a learning plan over the course of the fortnight. Additionally, we will be focusing on positive lifestyles looking at stress and stress management. Stress is our body’s response to a demand placed on it. Stress is a normal condition, experienced by everyone. It involves an emotional, physical or mental response to events that cause bodily or mental tension. It can be thought of as a state of readiness – the ‘fight or flight’ response. A small amount of stress from time to time is not a problem; it can even motivate us to get things done. When stress is intense and ongoing, it can start to impact our physical and mental health. Teachers will introduce the term “Stressors” and students should be able to identify areas where they feel most stressed. Students are also given the opportunity to think about strategies to overcome stressful situations. Our PBL prize draws will be in Weeks 3, 6 and 9 with a mega prize at the end of each term. Alternately, students can drop 25 PBL tickets in to the office for a merit certificate to go toward earning a Platinum Jacket. PBL prize winners for Week 3 are listed below. Congratulations to these students who have demonstrated being respectful, responsible learners.

Year 7 2020 In order to confirm our classes for 2020 as soon as possible, please return Year 7 2020 enrolment forms to the office by 16th August. 2019. We are also seeking feedback on our Year 6 into & Transition Program. You’ll find the survey on our Facebook page. Breakfast Club and Homework Centre @ Leeton High School Breakfast Club is on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Toast and a variety of spreads and fresh fruit is available. A huge thank you to the Golden Apple for supporting us with this great start to the day. Our Homework Centre will run on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm – 4.30pm in the Library. Teachers will be available to support students with homework, assignments and assessment tasks. Students are welcome to access the internet for educational purposes via the computers in the library.

Mrs Meagan Crelley Principal

~~DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - TEACHING & LEARNING~~ Lifelong learning is about creating ‘a society of individuals who are motivated to continue learning throughout their lives – both formally and informally’. I came to focus on this important concept for my fortnightly newsletter write up, after having a recent conversation with a former colleague of mine. It was the opinion of my colleague that the concept ‘Lifelong’ learning was not emphasised back in ‘his day’ of schooling compared to more recent times. The observations made are somewhat affirmed by research available on the use and recent origin of the word. A statement made by a former Commonwealth Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs at a conference in 1999 titled: Preparing Youth for the 21st century reinforces the importance of the concept for our students. There is little doubt that nations which will succeed in the 21st century will be knowledge societies - societies rich in human capital, effective in the capacity to utilise and deploy their human resources productively and successful in the creation and commercialisation of new knowledge. In such a world there will be need to be greater opportunities than ever before for lifelong learning for preparation not just for the first job but for succeeding jobs. I am sure most people would be familiar with the saying success begets success or wealth begets wealth. Linking back to learning, it is important that our students have a sound educational foundation as research demonstrates that educational participation later in life is strongly correlated with educational background (primary and high school) - education begets education. In short, engagement in present day learning is a strong predictor of future success and engagement in learning. To ensure that we understand the path of each students’ learning journey, it is important that as a school we understand the needs and desires of the community (students and parents) that we serve. Students are understandably influenced in part by the conversations they have with their parents regarding career choices. When parents where asked about educational aspirations of their children in the most recent ‘Tell Them From Me’ survey (2018), the following information was obtained.

Within the last fortnight, the school has been working on two prominent initiatives to provide choice to our students as they transition from school into either further study or employment. We promoted the Country Universities Centre to our Year 11 and

Page 4: LEETON HIGH SCHOOL Newsletter · these goals and to focus on how we best learn, we will also be creating a learning plan over the course of the fortnight. Additionally, we will be

RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS

Year 12 students. The newly established centre in Leeton provides our students, who have aspirations to undertake university study, the opportunity to stay in the local region. The school also recently facilitated a meeting, attended by over 20 individuals across a wide section of the government, industry and the education sector to discuss initiatives under the National Indigenous Advancement Strategy (federally administered). One of the main objectives of the meeting was to devise strategies to better support our Indigenous students to transition from education into sustainable employment, particularly through School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeship activities. We recognise that it is much more difficult to achieve great outcomes unless we engage and utilise the expertise of key and influential stakeholders in this area. The Mayor of Leeton Shire, Paul Maytom, three members of the Prime Minister’s & Cabinet Office, along with Karen Davy of the local Lands Council were present. A further meeting will be held at Leeton High School on Thursday 29 August to build on the discussions of the first meeting. In summary, it is important that we seek to raise the educational aspirations of our students to encourage them to pursue lifelong learning to improve their knowledge, skills and understanding within a personal, social and/or employment related perspective. As a school and a community (parents/carers) we play an important role in influencing the aspirations of our ‘students/children’. This is affirmed from the following findings from a research paper titled, ‘Educational Aspiration of Secondary School Students’ - “there exists a significant positive relationship between parental encouragement and a positive school environment with educational aspirations of students”.

~~ SCHOOL NEWS~~

MARIA TYNAN YOUTH PARLIAMENT VISIT & SECRETARY FOR A DAY Marie Tynan of Year 10 attended the YMCA NSW Youth Parliament in Sydney where she was on the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Committee. “I was appointed Shadow Minister for the committee and debated our Bill ‘a single use plastics ban in NSW’. It was highly successful and passed the Youth Parliament.” The bill will now go to the Youth Advocate and could be debated in real parliament. Marie had an amazing time and encourages others to apply for it next year. Last week Marie went to Sydney for the Secretary for a Day Program. Students are selected to visit the Department of Education and participate in workshops. Marie participated in the Sustainability and Waste Management Business Unit. She learnt a lot about public speaking, how the department manages things and making sure her voice was heard. If this is something other students may be interested in please see Marie or Mr Duggan.

BACK TO THE 80’S WRAP UP Life is almost back to ‘normal’ for CAPA staff and students after an absolutely epic Term 2 which ended with the hugely successful Back To The 80’s musical. The many hours rehearsing paid off when our cast and crew of 73 students performed to well over 1000 audience members in 4 shows. Thank you so much and congratulations to all of the amazing students involved in the show and a massive shout out to former student, Josh Nikoro for jumping on board a month out to perform back on the stage he was so comfortable on growing up. A massive vote of thanks to all of our school staff and P&C for your support and hard work in the lead up and during the show. Many staff and students were involved in a variety of roles behind the scenes and without you, we couldn’t give our students performance opportunities such as these. And lastly, thank you to the Leeton community. 9 local schools attended our matinee shows and many community members, many with no connection to Leeton High, came to the evening performances. Some people even returned to watch the show twice! We are very lucky to live in a town where our students are supported and celebrated for doing what they love. Until 2021!

KROP 26 members of the Back to the 80’s cast performed ‘Love Shack’ in KROP at the Griffith Regional Theatre last week. KROP (Kids Rapt On Performing) is the annual showcase of performing arts from public schools in the Griffith Region and last week we packed up the Love Shack and transported it to Griffith to wow the audiences at 3 shows. Opening the second act of the show requires some high energy and our students once again rose to the occasion and had everyone dancing and singing along. It was one of the most entertaining acts in the show. The kids had so much fun reliving the musical again that we’ve organised one more performance, at the Leeton Eisteddfod later this week. Congratulations to all involved and good luck at The Roxy on Wednesday!
