    2011 Census of Population

    Leeds: The Big Picture

The Census is completed every ten years and is the largest piece of social

research undertaken in the country. It has always been considered a rich andvaluable source of information and represents a gold standard in terms ofpopulation statistics.

The Census tells us how many people live where and provides valuableinformation on the make-up of local communities, covering issues such ashealth, housing, employment, skills levels and transport.

It provides the basis for central and local government, health authorities andmany other organisations to target their resources and to plan housing,

education, employment, health, transport and other services for years to come.

The Census took place on 27 March 2011. It was conducted on a resident basis, and the statistics relate to where people usually live, rather than where theywere on Census night. Students who were studying away from home during theterm were enumerated at their term-time address.

ONS achieved its target response rate of 94% in England and Wales and at least80% in every local authority area. The response rate for Leeds was94% whichis betterthan was achieved in 2001.

The information contained in this pack is based on local authority level datawhich was published by the Office for National Statistics on 11 December 2012.The information is arranged by the following themes, and includes, wherepossible, comparisons to the 2001 Census:

Demographic Profile Housing Profile Household Compositions Economy Profile Lifelong Learning Profile

    Health and Wellbeing Profile

During 2013 the Office for National Statistics will provide information at smallergeographic levels and then in cross tabulations, such as by age or ethnicity. Thiswill provide an even richer and more valuable data source and all the data willbe made available on the Leeds Observatory.

Source: All data has been supplied by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).While every carehas been taken to ensure the accuracy of the data, it is provided only on condition that LeedsCity Councilcannot be held responsible for any error, omission or misrepresentation whethernegligent or otherwise.

    Health and Wellbeing Profile

This section contains information on:Limiting long-term illnessGeneral healthProvision of unpaid careCommunal establishments

Some of the key things to note

Limiting long-term illnessN.B. In 2011, those reporting a long-term health problem or disability (includingthose related to age) that limited their day-to-day activities and that had lasted,or was expected to last, at least 12 months, were asked to assess whether theirdaily activities were limited a lot, a little or not at all by such a health problem. In 2001 the limiting-long term illness response categories were just yes orno. To compare 2001 and 2011, the 2011 results for yes, limited a lotandyes, limited a little have been combined into a single yes response.

Over 125,000 people in Leeds (16.8% of the total population) feel thatthey have a long-term illness, slightly less than the England and Wales

rate of 17.9% Of these people, just over 59,000 (7.9% of the total population) feel that

their day-to-day activities are limited a lot and just over 66,500 (8.9% ofthe total population) feel their day-to-day activities are limited a little

Almost 61,000 people of working age (16-64 years) have a limiting long-term illness

24.8% of all households in Leeds contain one or more people with alimiting long-term illness

The number of people reporting limiting long-term illness in Leeds hasfallen from just over 128,000 in 2001 (18%) to just over 125,000 in 2011

    (16.8%)

General HealthN.B. In 2011 residents were asked to assess their general state of health on afive point scale: very good, good, fair, bad or very bad. This was not a newquestion in 2011 but its structure has changed. In 2001 it was based on a threepoint scale: good, fairly good or not good. The findings are therefore not directlycomparable. For example, some people recording their health as fair in 2011might have said fairly good using a 2001 scale but some might have said notgood. ONS will publish an analysis of the data relating to health in 2013 whichwill compare general health data with 2001 by applying weightings to theresponse categories.

  • 7/29/2019 Leeds Census Big Picture

    40/56
