Lee Jackson Award

The Lee Jackson Award is given each March to

an active and dedicated member of Youngstown

All Breed Training Club in memory of Lee and

Kay Jackson. This year the award was

presented to Sharon Phillips. Before describing

the many reasons Sharon was so deservedly

selected, a brief history of the award may

interest new club members as well as longtime

members.

Lee Jackson was one of the founding members

of Youngstown All Breed Training Club.

Before the club was established several people

met and trained their dogs at Pioneer Pavilion in

Mill Creek Park. They later moved to GF Hall

on Logan Avenue in Youngstown to train. Lee

spent many hours and much of his money to

keep this club active. He was known as “Mr.

Youngstown All Breed” and served as president

of YABTC for 18 years. Lee was also president

of the Mahoning-Shenango Kennel Club.

He was an AKC judge and one of three people

in the nation to receive the distinguished 1977

Midwest D’Ambris Award. Unfortunately Lee

passed away before he could personally receive

the award.

Both Lee and his wife Kay competed in

obedience with Dachshunds and Belgian

Sheepdogs. Kay was also Trial Secretary for

many years. They had three dogs titled

‘Companion’ dogs. Lee had a good sense of

humor and had one of his wirehaired

Dachshunds registered with the name of

“DAMMIT”.

March of 1978, the first Lee Jackson Award

was given in honor of him and has become a

yearly tradition of YABTC. The award is given

to an outstanding person who has served our

club.

At this year’s March General Meeting, YABTC

President, Perri Graf, had the pleasure and

honor of presenting the 2013 Lee Jackson

Award to the club’s talented, teacher/trainer and

longtime member, Sharon Phillips.

Sharon is one of those rare individuals any

organization is lucky to have on-board. She is a

talented, smart, and a gifted trainer. She

has had a lifetime with dogs beginning at the

age of ten with a Poodle (when she really

wanted a Saluki! LOL).

Many breeds followed her first. She has shown

Collies, Pharaoh Hounds, Whippits, Belgian

Sheepdogs, Parson Terriers, and Australian

Shepherds, holding titles in obedience,

conformation, agility and lure coursing.

Her accomplishments with dogs are

complimented by her generosity to YABTC.

Sharon, a gifted artist, has donated artwork to

our raffles. She has donated enormous amounts

of time and other items for those raffles.

And when you find her on the training floor and

you see she is always willing to give instruction

to those who need it. Sharon has taught Agility

and all levels of Obedience with Puppy thru

Utility class. It does not matter what breed

you own or whether you have skills or not.

Sharon tunes in on what she sees and knows

what to suggest. Judging by the crowds of

people and dogs that have been in her pre-

novice and other classes, attendees know of her

enormous talent as a trainer. Her Saturday

agility class has always been grateful for her

insight, good humor and friendship enjoyed

there.

Sharon has earned the respect and admiration of

her fellow obedience and agility competitors

and likewise her many fellow YABTC club

members and friends. We are so very lucky to

have Sharon Phillips at YABTC.

Congratulations Sharon, the Lee Jackson Award

is well deserved!

Sheltie Earns Group 1

Shetland Sheep dog puppy, Tobey is five months old and

is owned by Debbie and Don Harper. He received a

Group 1 in the Herding Group in the 3-6 Month Jr. Puppy

Class at the YABTC Conformation Match on March 3.

Thanks to Mary Thrall, co- breeder on the litter, for

grooming him for the show. Tobey’s sire is Gr. Ch

Solange Surround Sound (Dolby) and his dam is UKC Ch

Enthralling’s Hannah Montana (Miley).

IT’S A GO!

The membership voted by an

overwhelming majority to go ahead

with building a training facility on our

property (across from the water

tower).

It sure was nice to see so many faces

at the meeting. Now we will really

need to work together with classes

and at trials to make sure we have the

income to continue growing.

Welfare If you have any welfare information to report, please

contact Kathy Taleos at [email protected] .

From the Agility Desk at YABTC:

HUGE THANK YOU!

to all of you who helped at the agility trial in

Washingtonville on the 16th and 17th of

March!!!

And to all of you who came out to help without

even running a dog:

Bob Samios, Barb Mannion, Bill Reinhart,

Carol and Rick Kirschner, Cheryl Christy, Dave

Beach, Elaine Shively, JoAnn Fedyski, Karen

Wisler, Linda Ruse, Linda Kurfis, Mary Zalac,

Maryann Coates, Merrill Lewis, Sharon

Phillips, Pat Matevich, Susanne Stiffler, and of

course Perri Graf who did an awesome job in

the kitchen as usual:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU and THANK

YOU again!

If I had a hat, I would take it off for you!

I think sometimes people forget that we cannot

put on these trials without volunteer workers,

and that everyone that works for this club is

doing it for the betterment of the club. The more

volunteers we have, the less work it will be for

each one of us, and the better the trial will run.

Thanks again to all (and I hope I didn't forget

anyone)!

Fun Match On Sunday, March 3rd, YABTC hosted our 9th Annual Conformation Fun Match! Despite the snowy, slick roads early in the morning, it eventually cleared up and the exhibitors came rolling in with their puppies and young adult dogs. The day stayed cold outside but the heat was turning up inside as 85 puppies and adult dogs strutted their way to Best of Breed, Group placements and Best in Match.....We nearly doubled last year's entry! Something new we added this year was Adult Handling. This is a special competition where the handlers are judged on their handling skills, the dog is not being judged. We had 12 adults enter this competition and they were wrapped around the ring! Everyone seemed to have alot of fun! We also offered pre-entries, where the exhibitor could save a couple buck by entering ahead of time. There were 15 people that took advantage of this! Special thanks to co-chairs Diana James, Jessica and Diana Walter, Sue Davis, Susan Fithian, Megan Perrine and Lisa Sangregario for all your help making this a successful event for YABTC! Everything looked GREAT! We got lots of compliments afterwards saying what a nice match we put together! Thank you to the 4H Goat Club Capriculturists for providing the food as a fundraiser, they made $230 towards buying one of the market goat projects for Second Harvest. We had a basket raffle and 50/50 that earned some extra money for the club as well. Everyone had alot of fun and we are looking forward to next year! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS!

An April Day by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow When the warm sun, that brings Seed-time and harvest, has returned again, 'T is sweet to visit the still wood, where springs The first flower of the plain. I love the season well, When forest glades are teeming with bright forms, Nor dark and many-folded clouds foretell The coming-on of storms. From the earth's loosened mould The sapling draws its sustenance, and thrives; Though stricken to the heart with winter's cold, The drooping tree revives. The softly-warbled song Comes from the pleasant woods, and colored wings Glance quick in the bright sun, that moves along The forest openings.

When the bright sunset fills The silver woods with light, the green slope throws Its shadows in the hollows of the hills, And wide the upland glows.

And when the eve is born, In the blue lake the sky, o'er-reaching far, Is hollowed out and the moon dips her horn, And twinkles many a star. Inverted in the tide Stand the gray rocks, and trembling shadows throw, And the fair trees look over, side by side, And see themselves below. Sweet April! many a thought Is wedded unto thee, as hearts are wed; Nor shall they fail, till, to its autumn brought, Life's golden fruit is shed.
