2019 Scholarships
Calling all 2019 Seniors looking for scholarships!! We have had
scholarships rolling into the office here lately. We have copies
in the office or they are posted on our website. Follow the link
below and scroll down to 2019 Scholarships. We will update
the link as we get scholarships in as well as put them in the
newsletter. We have Lee County Pork Producers, SE IA Final
Drive and Lee County Fair Scholarships at the moment.

Art Hall Judging Day
Art Hall Judging will be Saturday, July 6th
starting at 8:30. Please check the fairbook
for your clubs scheduled time. Please re-
member to dress in a 4-H shirt and nice
pants. You are representing your county when you are talking
with the judge.
Babysitting Clinic
The Lee County Extension Office is partnering with the
Fort Madison YMCA to offer another babysitting clinic.
This will be held over the course of 2 days. June 8 and 15
from 9AM-12PM both days at the YMCA. Cost will be $25
a student and include a take-home bag for your new
babysitter with items they can use for their new business.
They will learn about what it takes to be a babysitter,
learn about the basics of CPR, as well as important need
to know items when
looking for jobs or while
at a job with a family.

4-H SafeFood Class
ISU Extension & Outreach will be
hosting a SafeFood food safety class in
Donnellson on June 12 from 1:00 pm to
3:00 pm. Rachel Sweeney, Nutrition and
Wellness Specialist, will be teaching the
class.
The class is geared towards 4-H members, families, and volun-
teers who will be working in the 4-H food stand and/or 4-H cook-
ing club members. The program will cover the basics in good per-
sonal hygiene, cooking times and temperatures, and cleaning and
sanitation practices. Participants will then have a chance to prac-
tice their food safety skills as they rotate through stations and
prepare a snack while keeping food safety considerations in mind.
This class will be held in the Learning Center at the Lee Co. Fair-
grounds. The program is free and registration is due one week

From the Desk of the CYC: June is here. Summer is
right around the corner. Fair is 1 month away. I hope
you are all looking forward to this and your projects are
coming along. Let us know if you have questions about
classes. We are here to help. Summer Camps are posted
and registration is open. Spots are limited for most of
the opportunities so get yours reserved today. If you are
a Clover Kid don’t forget to check out your section.

Fun Activity
Tallest Tower
You will need:
-Uncooked Spaghetti noodles
-Marshmellows (small ones)
-Ruler
How to:
-Put a marshmallow on the end of the spa-
ghetti and add another noodle. Figure out
different ways that it will stand. You may
have to crisscross the sides to get it to
stand upright. See how high you
can go.
Upcoming Activities for Clover Kids
Clover Kids are welcome to attend the upcoming summer camps for their grade which are: Summer Garden
camp, Fun with Bots, STEM Lit to Go at one of the libraries. Call the Extension Office for more information or
watch our Facebook page. They are also welcome to participate in fair activities of Fashion Day, Art Hall judg-
ing day, Stuffed Animal Show, Small Pets show, Open bucket/bottle sheep, goat and calf shows. If you are
doing Fashion Day, Art Hall Judging, Stuffed Animal Show, or Small Pets show you will need to call the Exten-
sion Office to sign up. Open sheep, goat or calf shows you just show up on the designated day.

Multi-Species Livestock Clinic

Improve your showmanship skills and get ready to exhibit your livestock projects at fair. This clinic is open to all Lee County 4-
H members who plan on showing live-stock at the 2019 Lee County Fair.
Species to be covered: Beef, Sheep, Meat
Goats, Swine, Rabbits & Poultry.

Horse Workshop June 1 from 10 AM to 2 PM
Lee County Fairgrounds Horse Arena
This workshop is open to all 4-Her’s that have an inter-est in showing a horse at the Lee County Fair.
Workshop will cover the following:
Rules and regulations
Showmanship patterns and tips
Horsemanship patterns and tips
Pleasure and speed classes
Open riding after lunch
**Helmets are required at this
workshop.**
Volunteer Sign-Up Sheet:
Volunteering your time to your community is one of
the greatest gifts you
can give. This year we
are seeking Lee County
4-H members in 8th
through 12th grade to
help at the livestock
shows during the Lee
County Fair. If you have
always wanted to help,
but never knew what
to do, here is your
chance. Please call the
Lee Co Extension Office at 319-835-5116 to sign up
today. Spots will be filled on a first come first serve
bases.
FairEntry online will be
used again this year to
enter all projects for the
Lee County Fair. Exhibitors must enter projects in
FairEntry online and pay fees by June 20. All families
received an email containing help sheets and instruc-
tions on how FairEntry works!
The Extension Office is available on Monday through
Thursday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Friday from 8:00
AM to noon or by appointment. Computers and Internet
are available at the Extension Office for use. State Fair
and County Fair are two separate entries.

2019 State Fair Changes
Breeding Beef - Required to have 2 forms of ID
Tattoo & Registration #, Vaccination # or 4-H Tag
Horse - Halter Horse must be owned
Swine - Declared weight system; if tagged with
USDA tags notches are not required
Meat Goats - Birth Dates required for all breed-
ing animals; animals must arrive show ready, no
clipping
Sheep - New pedigree wether dam class
Pullorum-Typhoid Testing
All poultry exhibited must come from U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid
clean or equivalent flocks, or have had a negative Pullorum Ty-
phoid test within 90 days of public exhibition and the test must
have been performed by an authorized
tester. Types of birds that need to be
tested: poultry (domestic fowl as egg-
type chickens and meat-type chickens),
turkeys, domestic waterfowl, domestic
game birds, pheasants, exhibition poultry. Ostriches, rheas,
cassowaries and emus are also required to be tested. The Ex-
tension Office will NOT be hosting a Pullorum testing night this
year. You will need to contact one of the following certificated
PT testers in our county to arrange a time to have your birds
tested.

After birds are tested you will be in charge of making sure the
Extension Office receives a copy of your Pullorum Test Form.

SHOW AT COUNTY FAIR! **
4-H Bucket Bottle Calves
Must have been calved between 1/1/19 and 4/30/19.
If purchased the calf must be purchased and in possession
of member within 2 weeks of birth.
Calf must be bucket or bottle fed, no nursing permitted
after purchase.
Calf/calves must be identified on 4-h online by May 15.
An exhibitor may identify up to 3 calves. A maximum of
only 2 calves may be exhibited at the fair. Only one calf
will be eligible for a trophy. It is eligible to be shown only
in the Bucket Bottle class.
Class is open to any newborn or orphan heifer or male
calf. Male calves may be shown as a bull or steer. All steer
calves must be castrated by March 15.

DOG OBEDIENCE CLASSES
There are only 4 dog obedience classes left for
this year.
June Schedule:
6/2– regularly scheduled class
6/9– additional optional class
6/16– regularly scheduled class
6/23– additional optional class
Class will be from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
* *Please remember that 1st and 2nd year exhibitors
must attend 70% of classes and 3rd year or more ex-
hibitors must attend 50% of classes. **
REMINDER: Lee County Sheriff’s Office will be at
class on June 16 with K9 Gunner.

CONCESSION STAND
FUNDRAISER
At the Southeast Iowa Showdown
on July 28th we will be running
the concession stand. All proceed
of this will go towards Lee County
4-H Program to help offset the cost of activities through-
out the year.
The Lee County Cattleman and the Lee County Pork Pro-
ducers have graciously agreed to provide the meat.
We are in need of 4 to 5 volunteers/members to sign up
to help during each time frame.
Please contact Whitney at the Extension Office if you are
able to help that day. We would like people to sign up for
3 different timeframes:
7:00 am to 11:00 am
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
3:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Clover Kids Livestock Opportunities
ATTENTION: All Clover Kids are eligible to show in the Cattleman Bucket Bottle Calf Show and the Lee County Sheep Pro-ducer’s Bottle Lamb Show. Lambs and Goats are eligible to be shown in the Sheep Bottle Lamb Show.
Small Pet Show
1. Open to all Clover Kids Kindergarten – 3rd grades in Lee County. 2. Pre-fair entry is required by June 20. Contact the Extension Office at (319) 835-5116. 3. Clover Kids enrolled in the Pet Show must complete a pet journal from the Extension Office to record information about their pet. 4. Clover Kids will have the opportunity to show the audience their pet and speak with a judge regarding nutrition, grooming, or special behaviors. 5. Clover Kids Pet Show animals are only allowed on the fairgrounds during the entry and show time. 7. All pets must come properly restrained or contained. Appropriate examples include on a leash or in a box, cage, or bowl. 8. Dogs, poultry, swine, horses, sheep/meat goats, cattle (beef and dairy) are not to be shown in the Clover Kids Pet Show. All other animals must be less than 100 pounds in order to be shown. 9. An adult must supervise Clover Kids and pets at all times. The adult is responsible for both the Clover Kid and pet. 10. Cats must have a current rabies certificate. (Use the same health requirements as for the 4-H Pet Shows. A copy must be to the Extension Office by June 20 with registration.) 11. Any female animal in season cannot be shown. 12. Participants will receive a participation ribbon. No premium money will be given.

Junior Livestock Auction Rules:
1. This is a Market Animal Livestock Auction- any animals shown in the BREEDING shows are NOT eligible to be sold in this auction- this includes cattle, pigs, goats and sheep.
2. Animals not registered with the Extension Office will NOT be sold. For animals to be sold at the auction, they must
have been shown in the 4-H/FFA show. All animals entering the sale ring must be sold or premiums will be forfeited.
3. Animals sold, shall in all cases, remain the property of the exhibitor until loaded. Exhibitors are responsible to see that their animals are loaded on the proper truck; Buyers are required to make plans with the seller to pick up live-stock. Superintendents will supervise loading.
4. No rabbits or poultry will be sold at the auction.
5. Each exhibitor may only sell one animal per species.
6. Animals must be clean before entering the Jr. Livestock Auction ring.
7. All animals will be sold based on the weight they are shown at.
8. Derby Beef are eligible to be sold in the auction.
9. The Lee County Fair 4-H/FFA Swine Show is a terminal show. All animals exhibited will be sent directly from the fairgrounds to the packer with the exception of gilts shown in the breeding show, as well as the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Market hogs. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Market hogs are eligi-ble to show at the Southeast Iowa Showdown or Final Drive and therefore may return to the possession of the ex-hibitor following the Junior Livestock Auction at the option of the buyer.
10. If an exhibitor is showing an animal in the Market Swine Class, the pig he/she sells in the Jr. Livestock Auction should weigh between 230-300 lbs. If all of the exhibitor’s pigs weigh over 300 lbs., he/she may still sell one pig; however, the animal’s sale weight will be set at 300 lbs. The exhibitor will not receive premium money over 300 lbs.
11. Swine must go grade and yield at the packer.
12. Exhibitors will be responsible for checking the Auction Program after it is posted. If changes or additions need to be
made it is the responsibility of the exhibitor to contact the Extension Office and let them know by 5:00 pm on Sun-day, July 14
th . THERE WILL BE NO CHANGES TO THE PROGRAM AFTER 5:00 PM ON SUNDAY, JULY 14
TH,
NO EXCEPTIONS.
13. Auction Pictures will have set times for all of the shows this year. If you are not present between the designated times then it will be the exhibitors responsibility to take a picture and give it to the buyer. Additionally, all exhibitors should still write personal thank you’ s to the buyers after the auction. Auction photo times are as follows:
Sheep and Meat Goats- 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, July 11 Swine- 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, Friday, July 12 Beef- photos will be taken during the show
HERDSMANSHIP AWARD: Get caught in the act! We will continue to implement the herdsmanship award this year. This
award will be based on individuals, not clubs. We will have judges walking around daily to check
each area. This will be an accumulative score from day to day. There will be one winner per spe-
cies. We will announce the winning exhibitors at the auction on Monday, July 15. Each winner will
receive 4-H prizes!
