IP68 (Waterproof/Submersible) Striplight

Striplight

Striplight is a an extremely versatile and also economical way to incorporate LED light in many ways. It’s design is simple which makes it both reliable and at the same time gives it an excellent $ per Lumen ratio. Striplight can be cut as required to lengths as short as 3 LEDs. There are markings on the strip indicating where to cut and attach wires. An excellent match to Striplight is Aluminium Extrusion (see page 42), which gives striplight a professional finish.

We supply striplight in two main types: IP68 which is waterproof (when sealed correctly), and IP44 which is moistureproof. IP68 costs slightly more, as the entire length of striplight is sealed in a silicon or resin filled plastic tube. IP68 may slightly discolour over time, but this has no effect on the performance of the LEDs.

The other main difference is the chip type, our striplight is available in 5050 and 3528 chip types. This re-lates to the size of the chip, and the light output per chip. 5050 is roughly 3 times brighter than 3528.

We have many accessories available, for striplight including controllers, dimmers, power supplies, cabling and much more. We are happy to have a chat and help you get the right bits and pieces for your job.

Note: Striplight is not multi-volt, it is available in 12 volt or 24 volt.

Striplight is available in 1 metre sections up to a 5 metre reel. Smaller or custom made pieces are available for a service charge.

Common terms explained

LEDA LED or light emitting diode acts as a semiconductor. It produces a solid beam of light which does not require a filament to be ignited to create light. Light is produced when electricity move through chemicals. Whilst this may appear a bit complex its application is very simple and very effective. This is the main reason why LED light bulbs are becoming more popular in all lighting applications worldwide.

LumenThe lumen (symbol: lm) is the SI derived unit of luminous flux, a measure of the total amount of visible light emitted by a source.

LuxA lux is a measurement of one lumen per square meter.

Colour temperatureColour temperature is the colour of light that the LEDs produce. Think of standard florescent lights compared to normal incandescent globes. LEDs are now available in a range of colours the main two being cool white and warm white. The key is to pick the right colour for the ap-plication. Cool white (5000 – 6300K) are great when you need a good bright light for reading and for areas like the kitchen and bathroom. Warm white (2900 – 3500K) will give you a light of similar colour to halogen and incandescent bulbs. Natural white (4000K) is an excellent intermediate colour between Cool and Warm.

RGB (Red, Green and Blue)RGB colour type means the light incorporates Red, Green and Blue chips, allowing an enor-mous range of potential colours by mixing different intensities of each primary colour.

IP RatingA measurement of how protected from water and foreign objects an item are, the higher the numbers the better. IP65+ is generally considered weatherproof and suitable for outdoor use.

WattsTraditionally we think of a bulbs brightness by wattage. In motor homes and caravans we usually have 10 to 50 watt halogen (incandescent) bulbs and 8 to 11 watt fluorescent. As watts are a unit of energy, that represents power consumption. To compare light output between traditional and LED bulbs we need to measure light output, not watts. Usually light output is measured in lumens. There are various conversion tables around however a very rough rule of thumb is a good LED light uses 1 watt to produce 90 lumens*. A 3 watt LED bulb’s light output is almost equivalent to a 20 watt halogen however power consumption is approximately one eighth that of a 20 watt halogen.* LEDs Unlimited have LEDs under development capable of producing 120 lumens per watt.
