HAZARDOUSLOCATION BACKGROUNDQ: What constitutes a hazardous location?
A: The manager of the facility, in conjunction with local authorities who deliver operating permits and insurance inspectors, is the only people who can determine whether a given area with flammable gases or liquids present is in fact hazardous location rated. The MaxLite salesperson must not make suggestions or a determination due to potential liability issues.
Q: How are hazardous locations classified?
A: A hazardous location area is referred to by Class, Division, and Group based on the data provided in the National Electrical Code (NEC). In the United States, the NEC is considered by many states and utilities to be the preeminent requirement for a successful installation inspection. In order to comply with the requirements of the NEC, Maxlite’s products are certified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) for use in particular NEC categories.
Q: How are hazardous location luminaires different than regular luminaires?
A: Only luminaires that are certified by UL to standard 844 can be used in hazardous locations in the United States. These products are identified by the words “LISTED ELECTRIC LIGHTING FIXTURES FOR HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS” near the safety logo. Hazardous location luminaires employ a higher grade of construction materials in order to qualify for this standard.

TEMPERATURERATINGS• A luminaire’s operating temperature ratings refer to the
temperature conditions where the luminaire can be used.
• T ratings refer to the ability of the luminaire to
manage heat.
• T ratings range from T1 through T6
• Higher T rating = a luminaire that operates cooler
• Gases (Class I) generally have a lower ignition
temperature than combustible dusts (Class II)
• Class I applications generally require higher
T ratings (luminaire must operate cooler)
than those required for Class II

KEYAPPLICATIONS:CHEMICAL
• Modularity in wattage and mounting options• Addresses major production areas with different lighting standards (pre-production, reaction/synthesis,
purification/separation) with mounting options that cover area, flood and highbay lighting applications
• Reduced fixture count to match existing HID layouts• Design flexibility with precise distributions for easier photometric layouts• Higher CRI, CCT than HPS = Greater visibility under crisper light
• Slim and lightweight
• Installs into low-clearance and hard-to-reach areas which were previously unlit due to cumbersome installation of large HID fixtures
Ideal for sewage treatment, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and volatile gas processing facilities
MAXLITEWEBINARS:
KEYAPPLICATIONS:MANUFACTURING
• Built to Last in Harsh Environments• 10-year industry-leading warranty available on HLR140/HLR170• High operating temperature (up to 60°C): durable and rugged enough to withstand high ambient temperature
and direct heat environments• High T rating: up to T5 rating
• Modularity in wattage/voltage/mounting options• Variety of mounting options allow for retrofit of range of existing lighting• 347-480V option available
• Can easily install to light low-clearance and hard-to-reach areas which were previously unlit due to cumbersome installation of large HID fixtures
Ideal for hazardous manufacturing plants, automotive, paint factories, tanneries, food processing facilities
MAXLITEWEBINARS:
KEYAPPLICATIONS:INDUSTRIAL
• Built to Last in Harsh Environments• 10-year industry-leading warranty available on most products• High operating temperature (up to 65°C): durable and rugged enough to withstand high ambient temperature and direct heat environments
• Energy and cost savings from conversion• No warm-up time required which eliminates need to operate them for 24 hours/day in non-key areas• Minimal heat production from luminaire = High T rating.
• Significant maintenance savings• Long lifetime of 60,000- 150,000 hours eliminates need to change out fixtures common with HID incumbents• Eliminates risk of injury from contact with HID lamps during changeouts
Ideal for power plants, cold storage, construction facilities, pulp/paper mills
