LED Lighting,

Capabilities Today

and Tomorrow

Page 2: LED Lighting, Capabilities Today and Tomorrow

• The most important citizens in the USA are our men and women serving currently and the Vets that went before them!

Learning Objectives

Questions??

1. There have been at least 15 TLED recalls worldwide since 2013?

2. Haitz’s Law dictates how many LED products will be available in 2016?

3. LIFI might replace WIFI soon?

4. LED is more efficient in high Kelvin temperatures?

Page 4: LED Lighting, Capabilities Today and Tomorrow

Sustainability Defined

Actual NO!, Really

Haitz’s Law

• Every 10 years, the cost per lumen (unit of useful light emitted) falls by a factor of 10, and the amount of light generated per LED package increases by a factor of 20, for a given wavelength (color) of light.

• Similar to Moore's law, which states that the number of transistors in a given integrated circuit doubles every 18 to 24 month, i.e. computers.

Where is LED today, tomorrow?

Is there any opportunity out there?

Linear Fixtures

Old, 6L, T8. 192 watts, 135-170 FC

NEW, LED retrofit, 38 watts, 130-170 FC

Are TLEDs the answer? NO!!!

• Generator sparks recently killed all 3,000 driver integrated tubes in a hospital!

• Reusing the ballasts, ok, but existing ballasts MUST be replaced.

• Recalls are now over 15 since 2013, including 2 well-known lighting companies.

• New fixtures, anything good above your ceiling??

• NO rebates with Title 24 when the sockets are re-used. No real retrofit would ever not replace the sockets!

A Proud moment in TLED history.

Economics?

• Major Retailer with over 18,000 locations

• Must maintain FC levels and reduce energy

• Moved from 133 fixtures to 81

• First cost moved up approximately 25%

• 10 year LCCA, $43,300 versus 37,400, 13.6% better

• Energy consumption reduced by 16.9%

Future

• Costs continue to drop, efficiency improves. • Manufacturers consolidate and dramatically change. • LIFI, visual light communication, instead of WIFI,

digitizing light. • UV lighting to disinfect anything you touch, imagine

killing Legionella, Merca at the sink! • Controls on light poles, including tracking you! Big

Brother will be watching! • New TM-30 to assign CRI valuations. • IoT • POE, Power Over Ethernet

Page 16: LED Lighting, Capabilities Today and Tomorrow

Future

• Digital Ceiling

• Light fixtures are everywhere! They won’t be “dumb” anymore

• Sensors to monitor and control everything, temperature, air quality, security, everything!

• Cost savings, no more camera systems, HVAC controls, intercom systems. ALL IN ONE, lighting.

• Individualized, human-centric comfort outside of human involvement.
