Easier upgrading to dot-matrix displays With its Domino series of dot- matrix LED, displays, Siemens is offering users of DL1414, DL2416 and DL3416 segment displays and their equivalents the opportunity to upgrade to a dot-matrix display without having to make any mech- nical or electrical design changes.

The 4-character 5 x 7 dot-matrix format has enabled the size of the on-board character set to be dou- bled from 64 to 128 characters. This set now includes a variety of Euro- pean language accents and symbols. In addition, the new Domino dis- plays are available in orange and green emission colours as well as the standard red, which was pre- viously the only colour available, and a choice of three character heights - 3.6, 5.1 and 6.9mm.

The operating method of the Domino display is identical to its predecessors. It operates in a very similar way to a RAM on a micro- processor bus. The device decodes ASCII data and performs all multi- plexing and refreshing operations internally, thus requiring no add- itional external driving hardware.

Colour comparator for chip LEDs

The hand-held colour/brightness comparator from P Caro & Associ- ates

A hand-held colour/brightness com- parator is being offered free of charge to companies having pur- chasing potential for the Citiled range of chip LEDs. The compara- tor, worth over £20, is available from P Caro & Associates Ltd, is battery powered and has five switchable current settings from 3

to 20mA. There are 21 wired-in chip LEDs representing the diffe- rent size and colour options for these versatile products. The excep- tional colour choice and brightness of individual LEDs at various cur- rent ratings can be graphically demonstrated, which is an invalu- able aid to both product and circuit designers.

The small size of these chip LEDs offers exciting potential for compo- nent miniaturization, particularly with hand-held products. Three types are currently available, with the smallest having a footprint of 2mm x 1.25mm and a projection of 1.2mm. High brightness illumi- nation is available in red, yellow, orange, green, pure green and ultra red. Super high brightness versions can be supplied in red, yellow and orange. Some chip LEDs also in- corporate current limiting resistors of 68-10001~ to minimize produc- tion costs by obviating the need for separate resistors.

LED indicator lamps unveiled A range of corrosion-resistant sea- led LED indicator lamps approved against IS specification BS5501 is available from Oxley Develop- ments. The approval allows the use of the lamps in hazardous atmos- pheres - Group l lC, Zone C - and is BASEEFA certified. Applica- tions for the lamps include chemic- al, petrochemical and pharmaceu- tical manufacturing plants and oil and gas installations.

The IS approved LEDs are the Oxley STR/LH/8 lamps with a piano-convex lens to provide even illumination over a large area and the STR/LH/8/RAPP versions with a pinpoint light source for wide- angle viewing in sunlight up to 100000 lux. Operating voltages are 5, 12, 15 and 24V.

Standard features include rugged construction with sealed glass lenses, panel sealing to a depth of 20m and high brightness LEDs 100% burnt-in for optimum reliabil- ity. All the IS lamps incorporate an integral current limiting resistor, an important factor to intrinsic safety, which also serves to limit total device energy.
