INTRODUCTION

This is the Proceedings volume of the "Colloque de combinatoire enumerative,UQAM 1985",which was held at "Unlversits du Quebec aMontreal" (UQAM) from May28 to June 1, 1985, and complemented by a Special Session on Combinatorics at theannual meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society at "Univsrslte Laval", June6-8, 1985.

The subjects covered in this volume include: enumeration and analysis ofspecific combinatorial structures like planar maps, Young tableaux, bridges or Dyckpaths, and latin rectangles; combinatorics on words; applications of enumerativecombinatorics to q-series, to orthogonal polynomials, to differential equations, tolinear representations of the symmetric group, to the celebrated Macdonald andJacobian conjectures, to Lie algebras, etc; recent developments in the combina-torial theory of species of structures; survey papers on Young's work, on P61yatheory, and on a new theory of "heaps of pieces"; a problem session.

The rest of this introduction gives a more detailed description of thescientific activities of the colloquium and of the content of the Proceedings. It iswritten in french to reflect the bilingual nature of the meeting. Note that whilemany talks were given in french, a majority (80%) of papers in this volume arewritten in Shakespeare's language.

Depuis quelques annees, la recherche en combinatoire a connu undeveloppernent considerable. II s'agit maintenant d'un veritable domaine desmathematiques qui possede ses objectifs propres (Ie denombrernent, I'analyse, laconstruction et la classification des structures finies), des methodes et des outilsde plus en plus efficaces (bijections et involutions, series generatrices etindicatrices diverses, formules d'inversion, theorie de P6lya, theorie des especesde structures, developpements asymptotiques, etc.) et des champs d'applicationstrss vastes, notamment en analyse classique (polyn6mes orthogonaux, q-serles,equations differentielles, etc.), en algebre (algebre llnsalre. fonctionssymetrlquss, representations des groupes syrnetriques, algebre commutative, ...),en informatique (structures de donnees, conception et analyse d'algorithmes,combinatoire des mots, etc.), en theorie des probabliltes, groupes et algebres deLie, analyse nurnerique, topologie algebrique, physique statistique, biologiernoleculaire, etc.

Dans Ie but de faire Ie point sur ces devetoppernents rscents, Ie groupe derecherche en combinatoire de l'Unlverslte du Quebec a Montreal a organise uncolloque international qui a reuni pendant cinq jours (du 28 mai au ler juin 1985)plus de cent participants et donne lieu a 35 conferences et communications. Deplus, deux membres de I'equipe ont organise une Session speclale de combinatoire

dans Ie cadre de la reunion annuelle d'ete de la Societe matMmatique du Canada,tenue quelques jours plus tard, soit du 6 au 8 juin 1985,8. l'Universlte Laval, 8.Quebec. On trouvera cl-apres une liste de participants au colloque de I'UQAM (unephoto de groupe est disponible sur demande) ainsi que Ie programme scientifique ducolloque et de la session speciale aQuebec.

Ce volume constitue donc les comptes-rendus du colloque de combinatoireenumerative, UQAM 1985, et de sa continuation a Quebec. Les articles qu'ilcontient recouvrent une grande partie des themes abordss a ces occasions. lisportent plus particutlerernent sur les sujets suivants:

1. Articles de synthase, en particulier sur les travaux de Young, sur la theorie deP6lya, ainsi que sur les empilements de pieces, theorie qui jette un regardgeometrique nouveau sur les mono"ides de commutation de Cartier-Foata et quiest susceptible de multiples applications.

2. La theorle des especes de structures: plusieurs articles font Ie point surcertains aspects de cette theorie combinatoire globale, 8. la fois elegante etefficace: regles et methodes de calcul, decompositions et classifications,generalisations, etc.

3. Applications de la combinatoire enumerative, par exemple a l'etude desrepresentations llneaires du groupe syrnetrlque, des fonctionshyperqeomstrlques basiques, des polynOmes orthogonaux, des equationsdifferentielles, d'algebre de Lie d'operateurs differentiels, ou des celebresconjectures de Macdonald et jacobienne, a la generalisation des fonctionstangente et secants, etc.

4. Problemas de denombrernents de structures particutleres selon certainsparametres, par exemple, les "cartes et hypercartes", les "rectangles latins","Ies tableaux de Young", les "ponts" egalement nommss "chemins de Dyck", les"partitions" ou "partages d'entiers" et les "partitions planes", les "tournols",etc.

5. Problernes de la combinatoire des mots: palindromes, algebres de melange etalgebres de Lie, etc.

6. Rapport de la seance de problernestenue pendant Ie colloque.

Signalons que quelques auteurs ont lnitie dans ces comptes-rendus des seriesimportantes d'articles portant plus partlcullerernent sur la resolution combinatoiredes equations differentielles, sur la combinatoire des polynOmes de Jacobi, et surla thsorie des empilements de pieces.
