overview

Session 1Understand the Problem

Correctly understanding and defining* the design problem is one of the most important steps to any project.

If you begin a project by correctly understanding the problem, it will increase your chances of success later. But, if you start your project with an incomplete understanding of your client’s problem... you increase the chances for failure later.

*don’t expect your client to do it for you.

why start with the problem?

9

Make sure you are prepared to ask your client A LOT of questions about the design problem.

“The internet is not working! My computer must be broken. I need to go buy a new one!”

Laboratorio Desarrollo de Producto . Fall 2010

let’s imagine...

10

your friend you

...

“My TX33 phone is not selling, design a new shapeso it looks nicer, and shiny metal like the iPhone!”

1. You don’t get ALL THE INFORMATION at the start.

2. It is easy to make incorrect ASSUMPTIONS about the

problem and the solution.

Laboratorio Desarrollo de Producto . Fall 2010

why start with the problem?

13

Identify the assumptions (the client’s and yours) that are being made about why the problem exists and how it could be solved. Then, re-write the design challenge so that no assumptions are included.

each design challenge makes you think differently

17

‘Design a vase’ focuses on form.

18

‘Design a way to enjoy flowers in the home’ focuses on experience.

19

How could we re-write this challenge:

Design a chair.

Laboratorio Desarrollo de Producto . Fall 2010

identify assumptions and focus on experience

20

1.

Design a method for supporting the body to eat dinner at home.

21

2.

Design a way for people to temporarily rest in public spaces.

1. You don’t get ALL THE INFORMATION at the start.

2. It is easy to make incorrect ASSUMPTIONS about the

problem and the solution.

3. Most design challenges make us think TOO NARROWLY.

Laboratorio Desarrollo de Producto . Fall 2010

why start with the problem?

22

Re-write the design challenge so that no assumptions are included, and so the solution space is larger and focuses on EXPERIENCE.

AssignmentDeliverable Format Understand the Problem

Understand the design challenge in a deeper way by identifying assumptions and re-writing the challenge.Write questions for the brief that you would like answered. You will be asked to share these questions in class with our client.

Use the 3 sheet format presented in class, and fill in all the blank areas. As a guide, refer to lecture slides on identifying assumptions and re-writing the design challenge.
