Growing up, I wanted to bring these drawings to life, creating mock ups of them. To this day I never start a project without sketching. It’s my way of connecting with my work. Artisans are at the core of the Lebanese heritage and unfortunately this know-how is slowly declining unless we strive to revive it. I decided to return to Beirut because there is so much potential to develop well-crafted and sophisticated products with an identity. In my opinion we are witnessing a demand for furniture that is rooted in heritage. My concept is based around reviving established crafts in a contemporary way. For me, this is a true privilege. When I launched my exhibition, the thing I was most proud of was how people couldn’t believe that the furniture was produced in Lebanon - and I am proud to NEW TALENT Lebanese designer CARLA BAZ designs all her pieces as ‘ functional sculptures’ certify that it was - a hundred per cent. It is my philosophy to only work with rough and noble materials, so I mainly use glass, metal and solid wood. I have an immense respect for the craftsmen I collaborate with, and the sacred relationship they have with their craft. From this, truly poetic pieces are born. I have a tremendous admiration for the effort put in developing new materials but personally I prefer provoking new ways of utilizing old techniques. That way my furniture has a story to tell. This piece, Hublot, is an elegant bench- console, handmade in walnut and rich glossy black lacquered wood joined by delicate brushed brass elements. Inspired by boat windows and the combination of glass, water and wood, this circular bench holds a long glass vase to host beautiful flower arrangements. Approx Dhs25,700, carlabaz.com
