Dear Parents and Whānau

Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou – a warm welcome to

you all.

Five, four, three, two, one, holidays! Yes we have five

school days left until we break for the April holidays.

School is officially closed on Thursday 13 April for a

Teacher Only Day and will resume on Monday

1 May. This is the last newsletter this term. There will

be no newsletter next Wednesday. Have a safe and

relaxing holiday; recharge your batteries in

preparation for Term 2.

Health and Safety Police Vetting Health and Safety is always a top priority for us at

school and as part of maintaining a safe environment

we try to be vigilant in who has access to our students

in school time or on school outings. If you are a parent

who is regularly at school, e.g., helping at discovery

each week, then you will be police vetted. Please

don’t be upset about this as it is standard practice.

Once a parent has been police vetted it will be valid

for the remainder of the school year.

Strangulation Every now and again unsafe practices among students

sweep through a school as a fad. The current one

involves children strangling themselves, blocking

their own airways to the point where they nearly pass

out. This is incredibly dangerous as it is restricting air

to the brain. Teachers have spoken to children about

the dangers but we ask that you as parents also have a

serious conversation with your children. Your child

will hopefully not be involved, however, they can

keep their eyes open and let teachers know if they see

anyone doing this. We will contact parents of any

children involved in this behaviour.

How do you plan for quality family time? Families are ever more busy with parents working full

time. It can be difficult to spend quality time together.

When my two daughters were younger (now they’re

29 and 25) we introduced family night. Every Tuesday

was our family night. We each needed to avoid

booking anything else into our agendas on a Tuesday.

Each week we planned something different to do as a

family and we made it a technology free evening.

Often we would play a board game or do a jigsaw

puzzle, sometimes we baked, once I even took them

Hi, kia ora, Guten Tag, Namaste, Kon-nichiwa . .

, konnichiwa.

Page 2: Learning today to succeed tomorrow - Banks Avenue School€¦ · sweep through a school as a fad. The current one involves children ... our first HEART wristbands. This is an awesome

line dancing (truthfully that was not the most

successful of our family nights). Family nights were

honestly the highlight of the week. No sooner was one

over and Merc and Paris would be asking what we

were doing the following week. Quality time together

as a family is priceless. How do you plan for family

time? Your child’s success or lack of success in education does not indicate what kind of parent you are but having a child that is teachable, respectful, a great classmate, mentally tough, resilient and tries their best is a direct reflection of your parenting.

School values Congratulations to these children who have earned

25 HEART tokens in the following values Excellence: Sarah H, Maddison K; Aroha: Joshua C, Bella L, Nation R, Dallys R. Congratulations to these two children who have

earned 50 HEART tokens so therefore have earned

our first HEART wristbands. This is an awesome

effort - tino pai rawa atu- excellent. Excellence: Loleannah M and Lucas B.

New Sandpit Toys Aren’t these great? Many thanks to the PTA for

funding the purchase of some new sandpit toys.

Children can spend hours in the sandpit playing so I

know they will love these.

Health Consultation It is a legal requirement that we consult with our

school community every two years on our health

curriculum, in particular the sexuality component of

it. Here is a link to the survey which sits on our school

website. http://www.banksave.school.nz/health-

consultation-2017.html If you would like to complete

a paper version call into the office. This consultation

closes on Wednesday 12 April.

Maori Vocab Quiz Can you mix and match the Māori word with the

correct definition? On the back page there is a table of

words and meanings.

Swimming Last week Team Kahikatea finished their annual

swimming lessons. For two weeks our tamariki had

been packed onto buses and taken to AquaGym for a

thirty minute swimming lesson. This was exhausting

work as you can see by the picture of Lizzie sleeping

on the bus on the way home. Thanks to the teachers

for all the extra work you put into organising this

event.

PTA- many thanks On Saturday our PTA ladies and a few other parents

spent several hours at Bunnings selling sausages as a

fundraiser. Many thanks ladies for all of your efforts.

We really do appreciate all that you do! Sausage Sizzle - Wednesday 12 April (See PTA for more information)

Mufti Day- this Friday Children love mufti day. They get to come to school

without wearing their school

uniform! What a treat. Our first

mufti day this term is on Friday,

colours. Money raised will be used to support children

and families suffering from financial hardship.

Sports Mentors At BAS we are trying to expand our Banks Ave

Mentor Programme (BAMP) to include sport support.

This would involve committing to picking up and

taking a child to sports once a week. In particular if

you already have a child playing a sport you may be

willing to adopt another child to support (note there is

no financial commitment - just time).

We have an under ten boy who would love to play

rugby however he cannot get to games or practices.

Would anyone, who already takes their own child to

rugby (under 10), be happy to also pick up and take

this boy?

What sports do your children attend? Would you be

happy to offer to support another child to play the

same sport?

If you can help contact Shirley Haig, Room 27 or

email her at: [email protected]

Ice Racing Club - fast is fun Speed skating is fast, fun and a great way to get fit.

The Mainland Club caters for all ages and abilities.

Skilled coaches offer instruction in either social or

competitive skating. This is an affordable sport

costing $10 a week (skates can be hired for $10 for

the term). For more information email

[email protected] or ring

are a few pamphlets available in the school admin as

well.

HEART Values Children are sharing with parents about our values. To

help reinforce our values at home even further I have

included three HEART tokens for you as a parent to

use. (They are at the bottom of page 4). You can use

them with your own children or when you come into

the school grounds you can give them to a child who

you see using HEART. Try to be explicit with your

language when you give them out, acknowledging

what they are for, e.g., Tama, this is for showing

excellence, your bedroom is spotless. Mohamed, this

is for showing aroha, you are playing well with your

sister.

The McDonalds Youth Duathlon was held on

Sunday 2 April as South Hagley Park. You

have to run one kilometre, bike four kilometres

and then run 500 metres. Madi was a first

timer, Lucas was a second timer and I, Holly

was a third timer. I was proud to get 2nd in my

age group. Madi and Lucas were in the top 15

for their age groups. It was pretty hard at the

end with the 500 metre run as you're

exhausted and you have to push on. Your legs

are used to biking and you can see the finish

line so you have to go for it. Next year we

would have to do double the amount as we go

up an age group so that's a maybe!

Join the fun… Being a Pippin with GirlGuiding NZ is

a very popular choice for 5 and 6 year

old girls and it is great to be able to

offer the opportunity to more girls to

join our Rawhiti Pippin Unit –

making new friends and, of course, having lots of fun

outside school!

environment and girls get together each week with

girls their own age to do lots of cool stuff like

discovering nature, visiting interesting places, making

crafts, playing games and more.

The tutors and managers at The School for Young

Writers have all been very busy with new

developments over the start of 2017.

We have seen a huge growth in our Saturday Morning

Classes as keen young writers seek that ‘extra

something’ our author-tutors provide. As a result, we

are preparing to open a new class in

Term 2. This means we can offer places for young

writers from Year 4 to Year 13.

Two day Workshops – are very popular. Up to 10 young

writers get intense workshop time with one of our

experienced tutors.

One Whole Month of Enrichment Writing – for a

personalised writing programme with regular tutor

feedback to keep children motivated and improving.

Radio Plays – supported by Plains FM, children write,

produce and record a radio play complete with sound

effects.

Radio Plays: Supported by Plains FM your children will

write, produce and record a radio play complete with

sound effects.

Reticent Writers: for a group of children who have

potential by hold back from writing experiences.
