Tuesday 13 th August 2019 PRINCIPAL GREEN’S PARAGRAPHS Term 3 has certainly seen us off to a quick start where we have been off and running from day one with many activities to keep us all busy. I hope you all enjoyed our Education Week celebrations last week. Education Week Celebrations I would like to say a huge thank you to all of our parents, carers, grandparents, family members and community who came along to our Education Week celebrations last Tuesday. The support from our whole school community was amazing where our open classrooms were jam-packed with family and friends, celebrating the academic achievements of our students, your children. Our dance groups and choir performed with great pride and put on an amazing show in our Education Week assembly. Ambarvale Public School is very lucky to have so many talented students who can entertain us on these occasions. I hope you all enjoyed spending the time with us, celebrating the amazing achievements of our Ambarvale Public School All Star students. Our Book Parade and Book Fair were a huge success. Our students and staff certainly had fun dressing up as a favourite book character with the theme of Book Week being ‘Reading Is My Super Power’. Thank you to all who came along to our Book Fair. It is great to know that many of our families have additional books in their homes. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing staff. From our administration and support staff, to our teaching staff, to our executive staff who all go above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure our students feel part of the Ambarvale All Star Team. Our Education Week and Book Week celebrations certainly highlighted their commitment to the Ambarvale Public School community. You can see some photos of the day on the last page of this newsletter. Week 4 40 th Anniversary As I mentioned in the last newsletter, this year Ambarvale Public School is celebrating its 40 th Birthday. This is an extremely exciting occasion where we aim to celebrate our amazing school. We will be creating an Ambarvale Public School Museum so if you have anything that you would like to share with us in order to ensure we are representing the past 40 years well, please contact the office. All classes are in the process of rehearsing for our performance ‘APS 40 th Fiesta- Dancing Through Time’. This will be held at Event Cinemas, Macarthur Square where all classes will be presenting an item that reflects the past 4 decades. A note is attached to this newsletter seeking your thoughts on the organisation of this event. We would greatly appreciate your feedback. Cyber Safety This week we had our Police Community Liaison Officers visit our Stage 2 students to discuss the importance of being safe when online and when using online apps. Cyber Safety is something that is becoming more and more important in today’s society. Access to technology occurs on a daily basis. In order to be safe online, it is extremely important for you and your child to be aware of the dangers that are out there. You as a parent/carer need to be aware of the various apps that your child is using and you need to monitor their use regularly. Instagram, Facebook etc. are NOT for children under the age of 13 years. Please also be aware of your children playing violent games as there are studies that have linked changes to behaviour and impacts on brain development to such games. Most games also have age restrictions that should be followed. It is extremely important that you are aware of what your child is doing and consider taking devices away from them before bedtime. Unfortunately, there are predators out there who are using online games and apps to influence young children, exposing them to unsafe and inappropriate experiences. Gala Day This Friday, a number of our Years 3-6 students will be participating in the gala day competition. Our students are representing Ambarvale Public School and it is important that they display good sportsmanship whilst following our school rules- Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Kind and Be a Learner. It is important that Ambarvale All Star behaviour is displayed both in and out of the school grounds. We have had a lot of positive feedback from the gala days so far this year. I wish all of our players a day full of fun whilst representing our school with Ambarvale All Star pride. Until next time, Mrs K Green ASSEMBLY ROSTER – TERM 3

PBL Focus This term, students are participating in a range of targeted lessons that aim to enhance their knowledge and skills. These lessons are strategically implemented to:

• identify what bullying is • improve resilience • develop strategies to be kind • build persistence

Week 3 and 4 focus: Resilience Throughout week 3 and 4, students have engaged in meaningful texts and participated in a range of Rock and Water activities. These lessons aim to identify what resilience is and develop strategies to manage emotions effectively.

YEAR 6 SHIRTS The Year 6 shirts order has been placed. Please allow approximately 6 weeks for them to return. We will get them to students as soon as they arrive. ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY Attendance every day at school is important for your child’s progress. It helps build friendships, life-long work habits and makes sure learning takes place. If your child is absent from school, please contact the school or write a brief note to explain your child’s absence. You must state the reason why your child has been absent, eg type of illness or reason for leave. Saying my child “was away” will be unjustified. An explanation must be provided to the school within 7 days of an absence.

PUBLIC SPEAKING Next week, all K-6 students will present their prepared speech during class. When planning and delivering a speech, students should think carefully about:

• body language and eye contact • the structure of the speech-does it flow

and make sense? • use of volume and tone to engage the

audience (avoid theatrical gestures) • including an introduction, body and

conclusion Speeches are due in class by Monday 19th August. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask Mr Nicholls, Miss Miltiadous or the classroom teacher.

That means there will be a lot of writing and reading happening in homes with children learning from those experiences. Thank you to all in the community who contributed. We now have over $1300 to spend on books for the library. This means that children benefit again from the money spent at the fair. Library lessons - There have been a few timetable changes this term.
