    Our programme engages students with STEMM subjects – science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine – through fun, stimulating hands-on workshops and inspirational shows.

    Join us 14–17 October to explore the world of minibeasts, blast off into space, enjoy a spectacular science show, discover the science of flight and much more, in our dedicated Learning Programme to inspire the next generation of scientists.

    Our Explorium days for reception and primary classes are fun, interactive workshops at The Forum. Students get up close with minibeasts or explore space and our solar system with engaging science communicators.

    Spiders vs ButterfliesWhat’s the difference between a spider and a butterfly? How many legs does a butterfly have, and can a spider fly?! In this workshop from Mini Professors, we’ll look at the difference between arachnids and insects, and make our own ants and spiders with modelling clay. We then use a Venn diagram to help categorise these differences.

    Visit Norwich Puppet Theatre for a special shadow world adventure with Ripstop Shadow Theatre. Investigate materials in relation to light and dark.     Science Adventure in the exploriumKS1

    Enjoy a science adventure on our KS1 day, where we take a look at our bodies and how they work, explore changing states through the medium of ice cream, and go on a holiday to the Moon! Each school takes part in all three workshops.

    Ted’s Moon AdventureTed the bear wants to go on holiday to the Moon. But he’s not quite sure what to pack or what he’ll see when he gets there. In this interactive show from Royal Observatory Greenwich, you’ll learn about what astronauts need for their missions and how craters on the Moon are formed.

    Digestion and RespirationTake a look at two vital organ systems in our bodies, how they work and the various parts, in this workshop from Mini Professors. Get hands-on, replicate the processes involved in the digestive system (and, yes, the end result!) and make a working model lung to take home.

    Changing States - Making Ice CreamHelp Dr Jo Science Solutions make ice cream in a bag! Explore states of matter (solids and liquids), changing states (freezing and melting), reversible and irreversible changes and then enjoy the fruits of your labour! Kitchen science at its finest. Allergies can be accommodated.

    Using striking scientific images, Science, Art and Writing (SAW) Trust workshops break down the traditional barriers between science and the arts, inspiring creativity and scientific exploration. Looking back at how the Apollo 11 Moon landing was achieved, we’ll see demonstrations of how current rocket technology works, how missions are planned and what lies ahead with new space travel ideas and missions – and prepare for a future job as an astronaut with some of the challenges that astronauts train for.

    Take a trip into space in our special KS2 day – explore the science of flight, make and launch a rocket, and discover if there could be life on the Solar System’s moons! Each school takes part in all three workshops.

    Mysterious MoonsWe’ve been searching the planets for signs of life but maybe we’ve been looking in the wrong place – perhaps we should be searching the moons in our Solar System? Journey through the Solar System on a hunt for life beyond Earth, with Royal Observatory Greenwich. Through this interactive and action-packed show full of multi-sensory demonstrations, learn what life needs to survive and discover why it might be better to search for life on moons rather than planets!

    A lively exploration of microbiology and art with a local artist-educator and UEA scientist. You will be set the group research question ‘are microbes helpful or harmful?’ and explore through experiments with bread and yeast, observations of conservation in the gallery and making in the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts studio.

    Science of FlightHow does gravity work? How do humans defy gravity? Can we fly in space? Why can flight be a drag? Discover the science behind why things fly, with Jon Chase of Rap Science. Explore the basics of flight using practical activities to investigate the main forces involved, through rhymes and demos. Jon unfolds the basics of aerodynamics, using practical activities to investigate thrust, drag, lift and gravity.

    Explore the strange and magical properties of matter, with fireballs, fire tornadoes and amazing chemical reactions. TV astronomer and author Mark Thompson has been enthralling audiences for over 20 years with his fascinating journeys around the universe. Now he is turning his infectious enthusiasm to things a little closer to home with this spectacular show. Mark, a regular face on Good Morning Britain, Five News and an established author, was also co-presenter of the original series of BBC’s Stargazing Live.

    45 min workshop + tour of museum

    In this workshop, you’ll play with an ingenious little device called Makey Makey that allows us to connect everyday items like fruit, playdoh, marshmallows and more to a computer! But, do they conduct enough electricity to allow us to make music? This is a lively science and computing workshop for KS2 students that teaches the principles of circuits, resistance and conductivity. As well as the workshop, students receive a guided tour of the Centre for Computing History, and get time to enjoy the fun hands-on museum.

    Science of FlightFind out how science is used in technology to achieve flight in airships, gliders, planes, helicopters, jets and rockets, with Jon Chase of Rap Science. Discover the basics of aerodynamics as well as finding out about some of the surprising events in the history of modern flight.

    Practical Principles of Flight

    Take the principles of flight paper aircraft challenge with RAF Marham. The session starts with an interactive discussion about what makes an aircraft fly, and lift, weight, thrust and drag are demonstrated.     This topical workshop from The Royal College of Pathologists gives sixth formers the chance to explore and discuss medical ethics with pathologists and scientists, allowing them to share their views on controversial topics such as organ donation and consent, the use of human tissue in research, consent for autopsies and medical research involving babies and children. Led by consultant pathologist Professor Mark Wilkinson, this session is particularly valuable for students interested in medical or biomedical degrees.

    Pi Power! Controlling Objects using Raspberry Pi and PythonKS3/KS4Tuesday 15 October

    1 hour workshop + tour of museum

    Discover how to connect motors to a Raspberry Pi computer and create the very basics of a moving robot. Using Python, you’ll learn the code needed to operate the motors.     Play the River of Life interactive game and develop your understanding of humankind’s impact on the environment.

    You’ll look at tourism, housing development, agriculture, industrial development and transport, and see the impact of your decisions on the river.

Looking back at how the Apollo 11 Moon landing was achieved, we’ll see demonstrations of how current rocket technology works, how missions are planned and what lies ahead with new space travel ideas and missions – and prepare for a future job as an astronaut with some of the challenges that astronauts train for.

    The Youth STEMM Award (YSA) provides a focused and engaging framework for young people aged 13–19 to further their passion, knowledge and skills in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine).
