Thing 1 and 2 The very first itera8on was inspired by a cylindrical pencil sharpener I had. I was interes8ng in how the sharpener seem to 8lt on an axes. Thing 2 was more or less the same thing, but trying to to incorporate a more cylindrical feel, making it more like the the original ar8fact. With these first two along with the next itera8on, I was focused on trying to make a literal interpreta8on of the pencil sharpener using en8rely linier elements.
The Cylinder There is not much to really say on this one. Like the last two, I was try to do a literal representa8on of the pencil sharpener that is the spark for the work that’ll be done throughout the semester. This was more of an experimenta8on with a different material that will come into use in the more recent itera8ons.
The Shell The Shell was the first piece to to break from the constraints of the literal ar8fact that acted as the ini8al inspira8on. It keeps the curvilinear elements of the pencil sharpener. This piece along with the next where inspired by the theme of emo8onal isolated and it’s effects on the individual.
The Urchin The Urchin is a piece I’m s8ll very proud of. While not all that different from the shell, I found it to be a more mature take on the Shell. Like the Shell the theme of emo8onal isola8on is present, but is also a study of how emo8onal isola8on leads to spire. Despite feeling very sa8sfied with this piece, it show the next fixa8on that needs to be broken from my designs, symmetry.
The Spider While I was very happy the shell, this par8cular piece I’m almost ashamed of. It’s completely uninteres8ng. If looked at from all angles, there is nothing new to see. PreJy boring.
The wall ALer the flop that was the spider, I had another design fixa8on to overcome, boring symmetry. I used the need to break my fixa8on with symmetry to shape the actual design. The first sec8on of the piece is a rather boring trail of pillars which intersects a wall that is also not all that excited, but on the other side it turns into something interes8ng. The central wall acts as wall that needs to be broken, like my own personal wall of symmetry.
The prawn This most recent itera8ons took inspira8on from some of Jason's recent work, which are a study of the laQce work of sails. I deconstructed some elements of Jason’s sail and mated it with my concept of a filter. Over this piece s8ll lacks the density of the linier elements to make the piece more interes8ng, but s8ll a good step in the right direc8on.
