An independent clause is a group of words that has a subject and verb and can stand alone as a sentence.

Examples: Zeus is the God of the

sky.

Rhea felt it her duty to defeat Cronus.

A dependent clause is a group of words that has a subject and verb but cannot stand alone as a sentence. (it is also referred to as a subordinate clause.)

Examples: Whereas Poseidon is

the god of the sea

Because he abused the power given to him

Subordinating conjunction dependent clause , + independent clause.

***Notice the use of the comma.***--OR--

Independent clause + subordinating conjunction dependent clause.

The gods defeated the titans although Prometheus was spared for offering his counsel to Zeus.
