SEASON 1 - EPISODE 3 COMPANION • POT HOLDER • QUILLOW • SEED PACKET Pot Holder - pg. 06 This pot holder project is created by embroidering 2 different designs. The first is the front of the potholder and the second is the back. It’s fast and easy to stitch together and add binding. These fun pot holders will add a pop of embroidery to your kitchen! This design was taken from our “Seasonal Pot Holders” projects collection. Quillow - pg. 14 This tutorial will show you how to make a chic quillow that is stylish and functional! Use 9 quilt blocks to make a patchwork pillow then attach the pillow to a fleece blanket. This unique project makes a pillow and quilt into one... a quillow. We created these designs using appliqué and they look beautiful when stitched. When the collection was finished we had a great idea to make it even better. We created a different version that turns the seed pack designs into free-standing embroidery. The designs now resemble actual seed packs and can be placed on a stick to decorate plants or flowers. Adding these designs to a flower or plant would make the perfect gift. Of course you could always embroider them on clothing, bags, place-mats or any other item and they would look equally as beautiful embroidery to your kitchen!

Place the fabric over the placement stitch, making sure to cover the line all the way around. The next step will tack the fabric in place.

Carefully trim the excess appliqué fabric away.

Stitch Step 5 in the design. This is the placement stitch for the first folded fabric piece.

Place the fabric right side facing down so that 1/4” of the fabric overlaps the edge of the placement stitch. Make sure to have enough fabric to cover the whole outline stitch plus the seam allowance on the sides.

Trim any excess batting away from the seam allowance after this step.

Place your pocket fabric over the placement stitches making sure you cover the line all the way around. Your fabric will be right side facing up and should extend at least 1/2” all the way around for the seam allowance.

The next step will tack the fabric in place. Stitch the next step, this is the placement stitch for the first piece of fabric. This first piece is always an appliqué.

Stitch Step 6 of the design. This is the folding stitch for the piece of folded fabric.

Once the folding stitch is complete, fold the fabric over so that it forms a tight seam against the folding stitch. Finger press and use tape to hold the fabric in place.

The finished pocket should look like this. Remove from the hoop.

Remove from the hoop and use your rotary cutter and ruler to trim a 1/2” seam allowance.

Stitch Step 7 of the design, this is the tacking stitch that locks down the folded fabric. Carefully trim the excess fabric away.

Repeat these same 3 steps for the remaining folded fabrics pieces. Finish stitching the design.

To start your next design, CIRPOT1, hoop one piece of No Show Mesh Stabilizer. Stitch step 1 of the design, this is the squaring stitch.

Remove the hoop from the machine and flip over. Place your piece of Insul-Bright over top of these stitches. Use tape to hold it in place.

Since you will see both sides of the pot holder, you need to wind your bobbin to match your top thread.

The next step will tack the fabric in place. The final step of this design will add the quilting stitches. The finished holder should look like this. Remove from the hoop.

Turn the hoop back, right side facing up, place your piece of batting over top of these stitches. Use tape to hold the batting in place.

Stitch step 2 of the design. This is your tacking stitch and it will secure your batting and Insul-Bright to the stabilizer.

19 20

Remove the hoop from the machine and place on a flat surface. Use sharp scissors to carefully trim the batting as close to the stitches as possible.

Trim the Insul-Bright on the back as well. Do not unhoop!

21 22

Place your base fabric over the placement stitch, making sure you cover the line all the way around. Your fabric will be right side facing up. Use tape to hold in place. Then flip the hoop over.

Use your rotary cutter and ruler to trim a 1/2” seam allowance. The two pieces for the pot holder should look like this.

Next, using a walking foot, carefully stitch to attach the binding with a 1/2” seam allowance.

Fold the binding over the raw edges to the back of the pocket, about 5/8”. Pin the fold in place just beyond the stitching line.

Cut a strip of binding fabric on the bias 2.5” wide by 40” long for the outside. Cut a piece 2.5” x 11” for the pocket.

Pin a section of binding along the top edge with the raw edges together and the folded edge on the inside.

Using a walking foot, carefully top stitch 1/8” from the folded side. Remove the pins from the back as you stitch a few inches at a time.

Lay the bound pocket on top of the back piece. Make sure the insulated layer (the back of the pot holder) is facing down. Pin these layers together.

Baste stitch these layers together. Use a walking foot to help keep the fabric layers together.

Starting on the top in the middle of the pot holder, place the binding along the edge. Make sure that the raw edge of the binding is aligned with the raw edge of the pot holder.

35 36

Pin along the edge, a little at a time, then stitch using a 1/2” seam allowance. Take your time and carefully sew around the entire outside edge.

Sew around the edge until you come to the end where you started the binding. Overlap the ends by 1/4”.

37 38

You may need to make clips into the binding, every few inches all the way around, to release the curve and allow the binding to lay flat once you are done.

Fold the binding over the raw edges to the back, about 5/8”. Pin the fold in place just beyond the stitching line.

39 40

Pin the binding to the back all the way around the pot holder.

Using a walking foot, carefully top stitch 1/8” from the top side. Remove the pins from the back as you stitch a few inches at a time.

Fold the loop towards the back tucking the raw edge under and pin in place. Using a walking foot, carefully stitch from the top side to tack the loop in place.

You are finished! Enjoy!

15

Once you have embroidered all of the blocks, lay them out on a table to complete your arrangement. Now we need to stitch the blocks together.

To start, hoop one layer of No Show Mesh stabilizer. Stitch step one of the design. This is the squaring stitch. Everything that stitches inside this block will be seen in the quilt, everything outside the square will be sewn into the seam allowance.

Use 1 piece of Warm and Natural batting, place your batting down so that it completely covers the squaring stitch.

Step two of the design is a tacking stitch for the batting. It is slightly inside the square so that it catches the batting. Once the step is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and place it on a flat surface. Using a pair of appliqué scissors, trim away the excess batting as close as possible to the tacking stitch.

Place your piece of fabric, right side up, so it covers and overlaps the placement stitch by 1/2”, this is the seam allowance.

Stitch the next step of the design. This is the tacking stitch that secures the fabric.

Finish stitching the design. The finished block should look like this. Remove from the hoop.

1 2

3 4

5 6

7 8

Remove the finished block from the hoop and place it on your cutting table. Use your rotary cutter to square off the block, trim a 1/2” seam allowance all the way around. You will stitch out nine blocks the same way. Once you have all the blocks stitched out, you need to sew them together.

NOTE: Use size C (6” blocks) in each design to make this project!

Page 16: Learning new embroidery techniques has never been easier!siterepository.s3.amazonaws.com/1450/workshop_s1_e3_tutorial_small_1.pdf · 2 different designs. The first is the front of

16

Once the rows are finished you will stitch the individual rows together in the same manner. Use your sewing machine to stitch the rows together slightly inside the squaring stitch.

This is what the pillow looks like once it is put together.

Press the bottom strip down and trim the excess fabric away to square the top up.

This is what your pillow top should look like.

Place blocks 1 and 2 decorative sides together. Line them up using the squaring stitch as a guideline. Pin them in place. Use your sewing machine to stitch the blocks together slightly inside the squaring stitch. We recommend inside the squaring stitch so that when you unfold the blocks the squaring stitch will be in the seam and not visible.

After the blocks are sewn together you need to press open the seam with your iron. You will do this whenever you sew any blocks together. After the first two blocks are stitched together repeat the same steps for the first row of blocks. Stitch Step 6 of the design. This is the folding stitch for the piece of folded fabric.

We will add extra fabric to the sides and bottom of the pillow to allow the pillow to turn and lay flat. Stitch the strips to either side of the pillow. Sew using a 1/2” seam allowance.

Press the sides strips back then attach the third strip to the bottom of the pillow using a 1/2” seam allowance.

This back piece should be the exact same size as the pillow front.

With right sides together, pin the pillow front and back together all the way around. Leave a 4” gap along the bottom for turning.

17 18

Sew all the way around, using a 1/2” seam allowance. Make sure to leave a gap along the bottom to turn later.

19

Clip the corners to reduce bulk. Turn the pillow right side out and press.

20

There are many ways to finish the blanket edges. We serged the edges for a more finished look. You can finish the edges however you would like.

Fold your blanket in half lengthwise and mark the center with a pin.

Tuck in the raw edges where the gap was left open, press. Stitch the gap closed with a hand sewing needle or your machine.

Stitch in the ditch to hold the layers together. Your pillow should look like this.

You are finished! Your quillow should look something like this. Now we will go over how to fold and insert the blanket into the pillow.

Lay the blanket face down on a flat surface. The pillow should be underneath the blanket.

Reach inside and grab the bottom of the pillow. Pull it out to turn the bag right side out. The bulk of the blanket will then go inside the bag.

Once turned, the quillow will look like this. The blanket will be inside the quillow.

Lay the pillow on top of the blanket, right sides together, aligning the bottom edge of the pillow with the top edge of the blanket. The edge that does not have the strip of fabric is the top and will be to the inside of the blanket. Use the pins as a guide to make sure the pillow is centered on the blanket.

To attach the pillow to the blanket, sew down one side, along the bottom and up the other side, leaving the top (where there is no strip of fabric) open. Use a 1/2” seam allowance and reinforce the stitches at the beginning and end. Make sure the bobbin thread matches your blanket.

Fold each long side in towards the center, along the edge of the pillow.

Fold the long end down in half and then in half again.

Charlotte’s FlowersFull Collection

Order 243AGHD

These flowers were inspired by a collection I created years ago title Autumn Sampler. That collection featured autumn designs that were created by using 5-7 ply stitches as fill stitches as well as outlines. By digitizing with that kind of stitch the designs look like they were created using embroidery floss instead of thread, which is a striking bold effect. I had forgotten about the collection for a while, A few months ago I visited our sample archive and fell in love with the designs all over again. We decided to create flowers using this same technique and you will be amazed that these designs were created on an embroidery machine. There are over 20 bold designs and most of them come in multiple sizes. They look great on anything you stitch them on, especially home decor items.

Honeycomb QuiltFull Quilting CollectionWe are introducing a new shape to our quilting collections with the Honeycomb quilt and we couldn’t think of a better way to introduce it

than with bees! Each of the designs coordinate perfectly, blending bees with flowers

and other design elements to create a beautiful quilt. Instead of a collection with just large designs there are free motion quilting elements, sayings and folded fabric blocks that compliment the main designs. I chose to digitize the designs using all hand stitching techniques to allow all of the detail of the drawings to show. I used random

stitch lengths with multiple passes so that the outlines and the shading of

the designs would not look uniform. I loved the way the designs stitched, we used a natural colored linen for the base with cotton fabric for the borders. The hand-stitched style and the linen compliment each other really well. You can combine all of the different block styles to create a quilt of any size, you will love these designs as well as the new shape!

Start by hooping a piece of tearaway stabilizer. Stitch step 1 of the design. This is your placement stitch for the top layer of fabric.

Place your fabric over the placement stitch. You can use painters tape to hold it in position if you desire.

1 2

Page 23: Learning new embroidery techniques has never been easier!siterepository.s3.amazonaws.com/1450/workshop_s1_e3_tutorial_small_1.pdf · 2 different designs. The first is the front of

Stitch the remaining embroidery design. After the embroidery steps are done you will come to a step in the design that says “Gap Stitch”.

Stitch step 2 of the design. This is your tacking stitch and it will secure your fabric to the stabilizer.

The first step with any appliqué is the placement stitch. There are appliqué pieces in each design so there will be a placement stitch for each appliqué.

Now you want to cover the placement stitch with a piece of fabric. Make sure the piece is large enough to completely cover the placement stitch.

Stitch the next step, this is the tacking stitch that will tack the appliqué fabric in place.

7 8

After this step is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and place it on a flat surface. Trim away the excess fabric with a pair of scissors. Trim as close as possible.

This stitch will match the final tacking stitch, but leaves a GAP along the bottom to insert a stick and complete the project.

Remove the hoop from the machine and place face down on your table.

Lay your back fabric and fleece right side up so that it completely covers the back.

You will need to use spray adhesive or painters tape to attach it to the underside of the hoop.

11 12

Now you will stitch the next step of the design. This step is a “free standing stitch” and secures your back fabric to the stabilizer.

Carefully tear away the excess stabilizer.

13 14

Design from the “Seed Packets” Collection

Use a wavy rotary cutter and trim both the front and back 1/4” way from the tacking stitches. You can use pinking shears as well.

Insert a stick, we used a chopstick, through the small opening on the back side.

15 16

Your finished Seed Pack should look something like this!

Free Motion Animals

Mini Mix & Match Collection

Projects

Collections

A few years ago we released a collection titled “Free Motion Christmas” that took the concept

of free motion quilting and adapted it to embroidery machines. There were 20 different designs that all connected left to right so that when the quilt was pieced together the stitching looked continuous. We have now taken that same concept and created our new “Free Motion Animals” collection. There are 20 different animals that are playfully drawn and digitizing using our free-motion embroidery technique. There are dogs, cats and even elephant designs. Each of the designs comes two different ways. The first version is a single pass stitch; this version resembles free motion the most since it is only one layer of thread. The second version is a 3-ply or as it is usually called a bean-stitch. This stitch is much bolder and looks great when you stitch it with contrasting thread. We used the 3-ply stitch for all of our quilts shown in this project. You can mix the different animals together or use only one animal and change the fabric, either way you will have a beautiful quilt when you are finished. The blocks are created using our Mix and Match quilting technique so they are easy and fast to create.
