THE PLEASURE OF LEARNING A LANGUAGE PLAYINGLearning a language and pleasure go hand-in-hand and to achieve this ELI has beenpublishing didactic material for years whichsatisfies every step of the learning path. This catalogue offers a series of tips forteachers wanting to enrich their own didactic paths in a pleasurable and creativeway, through the use of educational gamesthat enhance language learning.
WHY A FUN WAY OF TEACHING LANGUAGES?To teach a foreign language it is necessary to choose precise methodologies and it is absolutelyessential to keep in mind the characteristics of the students: age, linguistic level, learningstyle.
One must identify the various activities thatcan arouse interest in the students to sendthem willingly and happily into situations ofsimple, but effective communication.
The language teacher must ‘animate’ thecourse not to render it monotonous andrepetitive, and must find a way to capturethe attention of the students by presentingthe same content in different ways.
4
LANGUAGE DIDACTIC GAMESThis is why ELI has developed didacticgames which stimulate students tocommunicate and to interact. These gameshelp to improve the quality of teachingbecause they present basic grammaticalstructures, develop and enrich the students’known language, highlight the indispensablecommunicative structures of daily life andsupply information concerning the cultureand traditions of Great Britain.
The fun aspect plays an important role in facilitating socialisation and stimulating thestudents to further deepen their knowledgeand even helps with the capacity to reason.
ELI’s didactic games are therefore foundedon the principles of the effective communicative approach whicheliminates the tension that exists whenlearning a new language. They offer thestudents a great sense of freedom becauseplaying causes fears to disappear and ateacher’s corrections are accepted morereadily. The content of the games help create asocial dimension: the playerscommunicate, the atmosphere is morerelaxed and even the most shy of studentsare able to show their talents. Thereforeeven the weakest of students, from alinguistic point of view, along with everyoneelse is able to learn and interact.
ELI GAMES IN CLASSThe biggest advantage of the ELI didacticgames is the fact they can be used in classregardless of the course book beingemployed. They can be used in many different ways:as preparation for a lesson allowing, therefore, a passive use of the structuresand/or of a particular lexical group;as a complementary activity to check vocabulary and structures;as a revision activity; as a game when student attention levelsdrop; as a prize after a particularly difficult lesson.
DIFFICULTY LEVELSELI’s didactic games can be adapted to anytype of student and conforms to levels A1 toB1 of the Common European Frameworkof Reference for Languages. The teacher chooses a game according tothe linguistic competences of the students;just consult the product grids for guidanceon making the best choice.
HOW LONG THE GAME LASTSIt is up to the teacher or groupleader to fix the maximumtime to play the game. If time is limited, thegame can be interruptedbefore the end withoutdisturbing its efficiency, andthe player who has obtainedthe most points or who has gotnearest to the end, wins.
NUMBER OF PLAYERSThe number of players can changeaccording to the situation: the gamescan be played in pairs or in groups, naturally avoiding putting the best players together in the same group.
COMPETITIONS AND TOURNAMENTSMany schools organise linguistic tournaments during language weeksand ELI games lend themselvesto these types of activities. During these tournaments thestudents must, above all, understand the rules of everygame, however easy theymay be, which requires a simple comprehensioncheck. A game is placedon every table and allgroups, in rotation, mustplay and compete. Thegroup members who winthe most points are thewinners of the tournamentand they win the prize.
5
TEACHING YOURSELFELI’s didactic games are a valuable tool forlanguage classes but can also be used insituations where teaching is done alone at home, like any other educational game.
TEACHER’S BOOKLET AND INSTRUCTIONS In the teacher’s booklet, besides the rules ofthe game, extra activities are suggested thatallow the game to be used in different ways.
QUALITYOther than the educational value and the linguistic touch with which they were created,ELI’s didactic games are of the highestquality with regards to the materials usedand the graphics.
FIVE LANGUAGESCreated by language experts with definiteteaching experience, ELI’s didactic games areavailable in five languages: English, French,German, Spanish and Italian.
