Dear School Family I would continue my series on technology issues except there is something much more important at hand! A quick analogy to help you understand what follows: Tilly Smith was an 11-year old British school-girl holidaying in Thailand during December 2004. While playing on the beach Tilly noticed the water recede and bubble. She realised that these were the signs which indicated a tsunami was approaching. She recognised the signs because her school Teacher had just done a great job teaching the class about tsunamis! Thankfully, Tilly prevailed with her parents to alert the lifeguards, who responded to this child’s warning and evacuated the beach. There were no fatalities on that whole beach. This story illustrates what I see as an important part of my role as a Christian principal. If I believe I have information that is crucial for the benefit of everyone in our school community I must pass it on! We teach every student in our school from the Bible because we want all students to have the opportunity to know God and make an informed choice about how to live their lives successfully now and potentially for eternity. We don’t force our beliefs or the Bible’s message, but I believe it with all my heart. Many of you will have heard me say in enrolment interviews that information is a good thing, it either confirms your current beliefs and choices are good or it challenges them. Next week there is a once-off opportunity for you to learn about the Bible’s message from a world- renowned man, who is an expert on what is written about in the Bible. There is free child minding by members of our school community. I want you all to know about this opportunity, I believe it can change your life in amazing ways! Please read below: Where - 83 Milton Street Mackay the SDA Church. We will meet you there and show you where to go and what to do. When 7pm each evening. Starting Sunday evening May 19. Year 1 have been very busy during the past couple of weeks. The class welcomed everyone to the service at Farleigh Church and they enjoyed a visit from the firemen, who taught them what to do if they are in a fire. The Year 1 class also enjoyed two incursions, learning about good food and exercise with Mrs Broccoli from Smarty Fun.

Last Term the school held a Colour Fun Run. Students participating had the opportunity to fundraise and receive prizes for their efforts. All students did a great job fundraising, but a special award was given to Bailey Courtney for being the student who raised the highest amount. Well done Bailey!

Last weekend our school had the opportunity to share at Farleigh Seventh-Day Adventist Church. We had students share a welcome, lead out in music, acknowledge our beautiful mothers and even participate in a drama skit. Everyone did an amazing job and the Church members were grateful to have the students come along. The focus for our church program was on “Service”, and what a rewarding experience it was to see our students take the lead. Yes, they were nervous and scared but they were willing to give it a go. Deklyn Brown and Shaylee Macrae were two students who courageously spoke about their StormCo experience and what service means to them. It was great to see students talk about their time away and the special memories they made. They wrapped up their talks with a brief thought that

summarised the essence of this trip, but also the mission of our school and I felt impressed to share this thought with you all: “Serving is about putting others ahead of yourself. Jesus summed it up when He said that the first shall be last and the last first. These words sound a bit odd to us. We love to win and have things our way. We think ‘me first’ and that to be number one we have to get ahead or put others down. Jesus said: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:43-45. While we might be happy for a little while putting ourselves first, deep down happiness comes from putting other people ahead of ourselves. Just like Jesus puts you and me first – It’s incredible to think the God of the Universe came to serve you and me – He asks us to do the same for each other. Servant’s think more about others than about themselves. When you have a servant’s heart people are more valuable than things. When we stop focusing on our own selfish needs, we become aware of the needs around us. The Bible says that Jesus ‘emptied himself and took the form of a servant’. This was not because the task was so appealing, it wasn’t, but because He loved His children (you and me and every other person) so much. People matter to God, and because they matter to Him they must matter to you and me as well. We are to serve others because Jesus served others and asks us to do the same.” Kids Preach, p.83, 2007 Service in a nutshell is putting others first. This is what I learnt in my counselling training and is certainly a huge part of being a chaplain. I am constantly looking at how I can better help someone and sometimes that won’t mean fixing their problems but rather just being there. This doesn’t mean that you’re completely neglecting your self-care, because what use are you to others if you aren’t taking care of yourself? I am rather challenging you to look outside of your own needs and to think about what service looks like in your home, your spiritual life and your community.
