OLLI at Granite State College

Welcomes a New Director As announced by Mark Rubinstein,

President of Granite State College and Class of 2015

Following a national search that drew approximately 30 candidates from across the country, and after initial screening and two sets of interviews, we have succeeding in bringing Dr. Wildolfo (“Will”) Arvelo to the College to serve as the next Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Program at Granite State College.

for New Hampshire’s Department of Business and Economic Affairs.

Through both of those roles, Dr. Arvelo has demonstrated success in building connections that benefit communities, a talent that we believe will serve OLLI well as we work to rebuild membership. He is an effective educator, a successful fundraiser, and shares the commitment of the College and the OLLI Program to lifelong learning, to community, and to equity.

Dr. Arvelo will formally join the College on September 1; however, he does plan to spend some time with us over the summer in order to get up to speed more quickly, benefitting from some overlap with Jane Fletcher (who has—again— agreed to extend her time) and the opportunity to work with Sylvie, Tessa, and volunteer leadership to ensure a smooth transition. I appreciate the

efforts of this entire team for keeping OLLI moving forward.

account management. Again, we thank you for your patience with the OLLI office while a new staff team is being built.

NH Gives - a Huge Success You gave it your best shot! On behalf of your volunteer Development Team, THANK YOU for your generosity in response to OLLI’s spring fundraising campaign, NH Gives. OLLI netted $8,484 during this campaign, taking 83rd place (in terms of donations) among a field of 684 nonprofit participants!

This campaign exceeded all previous NH Gives campaigns except last year’s (FY 2020) which is considered to have been a COVID-related anomaly.

Compared to FY 2019 there was a 55% increase in the number of NH Gives gifts this year and a 61% increase in the total amount of donations. But that’s not all . . . $635 of our net was awarded to OLLI in NH Gives matching dollars!

Your team more than appreciates the show of enthusiastic support from members and friends (including our GSC staff colleagues). Let’s have standing ovation for the volunteer Development Team: Coleaders Mike Baker and Sharon Kace, along with JoAnn Meyers, Margaret Adams, Bob Jones, Phyllis Benoit, and yours truly.

Take a Bow, Bill And speaking of standing ovations . . . thank you, Bill Faulkner, for serving as Chair of the Steering Committee during this past fiscal year. Although Bill has made it clear that he much prefers his role as an OLLI math presenter standing in front of a physical classroom, he showed extraordinary resolve in taking over as Chair when no one else stepped up.

Bill crafted agendas, facilitated meetings and spent hours in between canvassing the volunteer leadership to ensure that regional members were represented in decision making. His last meeting as Chair was June 28.

Bill is a prime example of a dedicated and loyal OLLI member and volunteer. Thank you for your contribu-tions, Bill. (Get out your calculators—he’s determined to be back in the front of the classroom again ASAP!)

Happy New Year! July 1, represents the start of a new fiscal year for OLLI which means a new budget year known as FY2022. The OLLI program budget is part of the Granite State College budget which is part of the University System of NH budget which is part of the State of NH budget which has recently been approved by the NH legislature! No worries-- no test on this. Happy FY2022!

Welcome Dr. Wildolfo Arvelo The position of OLLI Program Director has been filled! Dr. Wildolfo (Will) Arvelo takes over as the OLLI Program Director on September 1. Will says in his LinkedIn profile that he “was born in the mountains of Puerto Rico where he ate oranges, bananas and mangos and drank freshly ground coffee right off the trees.” He grew up in Harlem and now resides in NH. Will has traveled to over 25 countries. He is curious about people and is a huge nature and animal lover.

He goes on to say that he “works on changing the system and solving problems by bringing people together.” A self-described convener, he builds bridges that link people to collaborate, network and create change. He works to improve organizations, businesses and communities to make New Hampshire a more diverse and better place to live, learn and work.” With that background and passion, Will is exactly the right person to work alongside a new staff team and volunteers and lead OLLI through this very exciting pivotal point in the program’s growth and development.

Although his full-time position doesn’t begin for a couple of months, Will has offered to spend some time during July and August becoming acquainted with volunteers, members, staff and the program.

P.S. I seem to have said good-bye too soon . . . I’ll be continuing to serve as your Interim Program Director until Will starts on September 1. Hello again.

More staff changes The search for Program Assistant is underway! Among a slew of other responsibilities, the primary function of this position is customer service and member

Mocha Mini Horse Farm Submitted by Jacki Fogarty, Class of 2012

Broad grins and near euphoria marked the first in-person gatherings for OLLI in June. Five classes were scheduled with crossed fingers that COVID would be under control and safety protocols would be relaxed enough to hold the classes. Not only was that the case, but the weather even cooperated for all five of the visits to outdoor venues. Fourteen OLLI members found their way to Mocha Mini Horse Farm in Bow. Whether you’re a horse-lover or not, the first sight of these perfect miniature versions of the big animals elicits involuntary “aww-ww-wws” immediately. To qualify as a mini horse, the animal’s height must be no more than 34 inches. We were cautioned, when taking pictures, to be sure to include a person in the picture because, without that reference they look like, well, horses! Cindy Moses, owner and breeder, proudly recounted the history of her program which featured award-winning minis since she began breeding in 1990. Attendees mingled with five of the mares and geldings in a paddock right off the stables as one of the three stallions watched through the fence in an adjacent field. (Well, he didn’t just watch; he stamped his feet seeking attention, wondering why we weren’t paying homage to him as the beautiful animal he is.) Before the end of the two-hour visit, anyone who wanted closer interaction was able to walk, turn and even trot with the harnessed minis. An Open Letter from New Member Greg Driscoll, Class of 2020 . . .

Two years ago my wife and I moved back to seacoast New Hampshire, having left Stratham in 2012. We were delighted to reconnect with old friends and looked forward to making many new friends. We knew that in order to meet new people we would want to engage with our community in a variety of ways. Volunteerism, openness to new situations and an enthusiasm for learning have always been part of our approach to the world.

Like most people, we choose carefully when considering how we can best contribute to and gain from various organizations and causes. Importantly, I only serve on nonprofit boards and volunteer where I think I can have a positive impact on outcomes. When I learned about OLLI, through a neighbor in our development, I was interested but not convinced that it checked all of the boxes for me. So, I paid my first membership fee, joined an OLLI book club and started learning about OLLI from many enthusiastic members – most of whom were in volunteer committee and leadership roles.

It did not take long for me to become an active advocate for membership in OLLI. In addition to ongoing learning and discovery, in OLLI I have found a community of people who are from many backgrounds, who have so much knowledge to share and who welcome the friendships that naturally evolve from class interactions, social events and common interests. I could not have imagined how quickly OLLI would become one of my favorite endeavors and the source of so many new friends. I am already looking forward to fall courses and events that I know will be exciting and fun. I invite you to join us or renew your existing membership today. Hope to see you soon.

Reconnect with OLLI – Manchester Region Submitted by Jan Gagne, Class of 2012

Reconnect with OLLI is the theme for the Manchester regional area event for OLLI members and guests. It has been a long time since we were able to host a preview in the Manchester area. While restrictions are being lessened, we are mindful that not everyone is comfortable meeting inside, yet.

So, we are hosting a gathering under and around the pavilion at Bethany Covenant Church. The pavilion is covered, has chairs and a sound system so everyone can be heard. If you are more comfortable being outside the pavilion, feel free to bring your own chair.

We plan to introduce our new OLLI staff as well as any presenters in attendance who will be offering classes. Attendees will receive printed information of the upcoming classes and events for the fall session. The main aim is for OLLI members and friends to reconnect with each other and to Reconnect with OLLI! So, save the date:

If you need to park close to the event site, you may use the upper parking lot closest to the pavilion. Most attendees will use the lower parking lot and access the event via several steps, with a handrail.

Looking forward to seeing you!!

Concord Region Ice Cream Social & Mini-Preview Submitted by Jacki Fogarty, Class of 2012

When OLLI in Concord thinks about a summer get-together, the biggest decision is usually what kind of ice cream will be involved. We are celebrating the beginning of a new OLLI year, the kickoff of the fall term and the opportunity to get together in person with a gathering at one of our favorite places – Beech Hill Farm.

Members and former members, that we hope will renew, will be invited to attend and to bring a friend to introduce to OLLI. You’ll hear from a few of our presenters and receive handouts about the in-person classes, field trips and zoom classes being offered starting in mid-August.

Best of all, you’ll reconnect with old OLLI friends and make some new ones – all outside the box (zoom box, that is). Look for the email announcement arriving next week. We will serve up ice cream and the joy of being together with old and new OLLI friends on Tuesday, July 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Beech Hill Farm, Hopkinton.

Plans for a summer ice cream social event have been finalized. We will gather at Lagos Ice Cream at 71 Lafayette Road (Rte 1) in Rye, NH on July 21 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. In addition to the best ice cream on the Seacoast, you will be treated to a great opportunity to reconnect with OLLI and all of the friends you have made through your membership. Bring along your friends and family who can benefit from OLLI memberships. See you there!

Conway Ice Cream Social Submitted by Cindy Graham, Class of 2016

Bedrock Gardens, once a private “backyard” was created over 30+ years with nearly all work done by founders Jill Nooney, a clinical psychologist and gifted sculptor, and Bob Munger, retired doctor, garden designer and engineer. The talents of these two individuals compete for prominence, but for me, a sense of humor won out. 37 acres contain formal gardens, waterways, a Japanese teahouse, wild scrub intentionally placed for educational purposes, a wildlife pond (hand dug by Dr. Munger) exotic trees, shrubs and plants, whimsical sculptures and so much more.

This is Not Fred Flintstone’s Bedrock Submitted by Pat Boyle-Steed, Class of 2017

Have you been to Bedrock Gardens in Lee, NH? Two separate groups of OLLI members gathered there in mid-June, and we were glad we did. Even though I had previously enjoyed the garden with family and friends, this OLLI trip was so much more engaging.

With the enthusiastic guidance of John Forti, the Executive Director, we were invited to notice how each element -- the various paths, sculptures, ponds, trees, and gardens -- contributes to a living work of art. The garden brochure describes it well: “an oasis of horticulture, art and inspiration.” Thanks to the OLLI volunteers and staff who organized these lovely experiences!

and doing everything they could to alleviate the members’ disappointment.

Special appreciation needs to go to our “Zoom guru”, Tessa McDonnell. Not only did she train our volunteer moderators, but she also was “on call” as necessary. Tessa also provided Zoom training to those of us who were uncertain of this new process. She will continue to hold these training classes for the fall term.

Moderation is Key Submitted by Beth Wagner, Class of 2010

In appreciation . . . I’d like to take a moment to thank all the volunteer moderators without whom OLLI could not have navigated its way through the months of the pandemic. Their task was not limited to hosting a Zoom class, but also included many hours of working with presenters and often running power points so presenters felt able to concentrate on their talk. I’ve also seen these same volunteers chairing zoom meetings, planning and hosting virtual social activities, and leading book groups.

Most of the Zoom classes I attended ran seamlessly. On the few occasions that I witnessed serious technological issues, the volunteer moderators handled the frustrating situation with remarkable calmness. They were also very gracious in talking to members

For the next two months, you can earn a free single-session class by recruiting a friend to join OLLI. Here’s how the WINNING works: WIN #1 – A friend of yours gets to sample the benefits of OLLI membership. WIN #2 – You earn a free single-session class. WIN #3 – OLLI gets a new member and, if he/she is anything like you, that’s a BIG WIN.

The program is open from now until August 31. There are a few rules to follow to collect your free class:

FIRST, complete the easy referral form (click here). SECOND, inform your friend they must purchase their membership by midnight, August 31. THIRD, receive an email confirmation. FOURTH, when registration opens and you choose your single-session class, call the office to sign up for it. Remember you can choose a course in either Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 but you cannot transfer the free class to anyone else. The full set of rules can be found by clicking here.

New Terminology Submitted by Jacki Fogarty, Editor

Have you noticed a few new terms throughout this issue of Outlook?

We have replaced “Learning Site” with “Region” to reflect that each of our four membership affiliations extends far beyond a single campus, city or town. So, for now, we have Concord Region, Manchester Region, Seacoast Region and Conway Region.

We have replaced “Steering Committee” with “Leadership Council.” A more modern and accurate description of volunteer leadership charged with the responsibility of moving OLLI into the future. In addition to the name change, representatives to the Council have changed.

Click this link to review the descript-tion of the roles, responsibilities and makeup of the new volunteer governing body.

New Beginnings Submitted by Jacki Fogarty, Editor

OLLI at Granite State College has been around for 17 years

and, except for this last year, has grown and expanded every

year. The pandemic put a crimp in our style as it did in

virtually every organization, but OLLI did not retreat into a

cave to wait it out. New technology, new training and new

volunteer assignments supported the continuation of

educational and social events, scaled down and different, but

still there and still enjoyed by the members who chose to take

part.

Yet, as we enter our new year (OLLI’s new fiscal year begins

on July 1), it feels like new beginnings for all of us. Look

through this issue of Outlook as well as last month’s issue at all

that’s new.

• New Director

• New Staff

• New Volunteer Leadership working in a newly-

constructed Leadership Council (formerly the Steering

Committee) – Sharon Kace, Chair, Cindy Graham,

Chair-elect and Bill Faulkner, Past Chair

• New Strategic Plan will guide OLLI’s future

• New Opportunities to get together in person – to

“reconnect with OLLI”

• New Fall Term will feature in-person classes, “Out &

Active” outdoor activities, field trips and zoom classes

(online catalog available July 8)

Our hope is that every one of our members and our former

members will reconnect with OLLI. We think you’ll find the

new and improved OLLI will have a combination of

innovations that will excite you and the comforting renewal of

OLLI features that you have loved over the years.

I don’t have to tell you that the past year and a half has been difficult for everyone; COVID-19 changed everything: new rules, regulations, protocols, facewear, even how we greet each other. I cannot think of one thing that has remained as we have known it. And for someone who is a creature of habit, and more social than even I realized, it has been torturous.

But finally, we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel as this horrific pandemic is waning and the country is beginning to open its doors . . . thank goodness.

Behind the scenes your OLLI leadership has been preparing and planning for this time for over a year; we can now strike up the band, start the festivities, reconnect with OLLI and slowly get back to where we were prepandemic.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Bill Faulkner, chair of the statewide Steering Committee, who led us through this tumultuous time; being sure that today’s uncertainty did not affect our thinking for the future of OLLI. Several major projects were undertaken and accomplished: a 3-year strategic plan, a new governance document including restructuring of the officers and modernizing policies plus renaming the Steering Committee to the more understandable title of Leadership Council.

Chair’s Chat

If you are anything like me, you’ve missed the in-person classes; although I must admit that Zoom certainly made attending class more convenient especially in our inclement New England weather. But what I really missed was some of the social events where I could sip some coffee, chat with friends, meet new members and just relax and enjoy.

The Fall Catalog will be accessible online in about a week; take some time to peruse the 101 courses (50% on Zoom and 50% in-person). Contact your friends and share these exciting opportunities to learn something new that will stretch their mental capacity. Invite them to join OLLI, as you have been meaning to do that anyway, and now you can receive a free class* too . . . a Win-Win.

To explain my feelings about this upcoming OLLI fiscal year, let me quote a friend and dedicated OLLI volunteer: “I am excited about the future for our OLLI. With the support of so many very sharp and dedicated people, I'm confident we can nail this thing and make our OLLI better than ever.” *See details in the email entitled “Member Incentive Program” sent on June 29, 2021.
