Clinics are where I do my job, every day I am there to fix a toy, build a piece of furniture, clean a restroom or dump a trash can. I also make sure we are all safe, did we have our fire drill? Did we order the correct cleaning supplies? Is everything in good working condition? I have your back, who am I? I make sure we have current contracts with funding agencies to get paid for the services we pro- vide. I keep the funding agencies up to date as far as our employees go, who our employees are, what locations our employees work in, and what credentials each employee holds. Learning ARTS

November 2016

I am half of the two-person team that founded Teaching Autistic Children, Inc. DBA as Learning

ARTS in 1997. Myself and the other person who holds this title share the past present and future

of Learning ARTS. It is part of our daily lives. We appreciate our staff and patients and plan on

being around for many more years to come, Who are we?

Clinics are where I do my job, every day I am there to fix a toy, build a piece of furniture, clean a

restroom or dump a trash can. I also make sure we are all safe, did we have our fire drill? Did we

order the correct cleaning supplies? Is everything in good working condition? I have your back,

who am I?

I make sure we have current contracts with funding agencies to get paid for the services we pro-

vide. I keep the funding agencies up to date as far as our employees go, who our employees are,

what locations our employees work in, and what credentials each employee holds. I also help ne-

gotiate rates and help find out what went wrong if we don’t get paid. Who am I?

I am almost there; where? Well I am almost a BCBA. I have been approved to take my exam for the

BACB and I am waiting patiently for that day to arrive (ok well not so patiently I may be very anx-

ious actually). I have worked long and hard to get here. I have my Regional Supervisor helping me

every step of the way become a fantastic BCBA, and to be prepared to start Supervising my team

as soon as I pass that BCBA exam. Who am I?

Okay here are our results from last month’s survey, “what do you look forward to most in the

Fall? Here are the result s Most popular to least.

The weather! Not too hot, not too cold all you need is a light jacket!

Halloween! The one time of year I get to dress up as my favorite superhero and go to random peoples hous-

es and receive candy. Trust me, you will not get the same reaction if you try this on St Patricks day.

Thanksgiving! A whole holiday dedicated to being thankful! And to eating copious amounts of food in one

sitting…

Pumpkin Spice! Can be found pretty much in anything, but only for this season!

Nature! The leaves change colors and become piles of that must be jumped into repeatedly for endless fun!

The weather has won! But really are we surprised? It is not too cold , not too hot , but just right!

This month is all about the main entrée at your holiday meal. The main thing that everyone is

waiting for. The entrée that everyone waits possibly all year to partake in . What is your main

Entrée for your holiday meal?

Turkey– Whether It’s grilled, fired or baked tender and delicious turkey is a must

Ham– Whether it’s a spiral, baked or even canned, Ham is the rue choice for the Holidays

Turducken– for when you can’t decide which bird to choose, simply choose them all!

Tofurkey– Because this way no birds are killed, just plants

Beef– it always about the beef. No exceptions, I need some cow for my holiday meal

Seafood– this is the fish one, not the chewing with you mouth open one…

Grandmother: Why did you put eggs in the

category of "crops" on your state report?

Granddaughter: Because eggs are a crop.

Grandmother: No they are not, they are a

commodity.

Granddaughter: Yes they are, haven't you ev-

er heard of eggplants?

Let’s face it, spend a bit of time with a child and

they will make you laugh. Most of the time they

don’t even realize they are being funny, because

to them they are just being a kid. Learning ARTS

employees are incredibly lucky that we get to see

these moments happen and enjoy the hilarity that

ensues from it. So we want to hear from you

about your patients or their families. Without ac-

tually saying their names, tell us a funny story

about your patient. Maybe they asked a Funny

question, responded to a question in an “out of

the box” way, or just did something that was just

plain goofy. We want to hear about it! Email

[email protected] and you might see

your story here!

Why do turkeys always go, "gobble, gobble"? Because they never learned good table man-ners! What always comes at the end of Thanksgiv-ing? The letter G! When does Christmas come before Thanksgiv-ing? In the dictionary! What key has legs and can't open doors? A turkey! What happened when the turkey got into a fight? He got the stuffing knocked out of him!

Teacher: "Why did the Pilgrims sail to America?" Student: "Maybe they missed their plane." What's the best thing to put into pumpkin pie? Your teeth! How can you send a turkey through the post office? Bird class mail! Should you have your whole family for Thanksgiving dinner? No, you should just have the turkey! What did the monster say to the Thanksgiv-ing turkey? Pleased to eat you!

Finally we are getting some rain and colder weather, yay! Along with this awesome

rain, comes………the flu, boo! The key to prevention is knowledge, so let’s learn about the

flu.

Let’s start at the beginning. How does the flu get passed around? According to the

CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), most experts believe that the flu is spread

mainly by droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can

land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get

the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own

mouth, eyes or possibly their nose. The worst is that a person can be contagious even before

they have symptoms of the flu. Most healthy adults may begin infecting others 1 day before

they start showing symptoms, and up to 5 – 7 days after becoming sick.

How about we just avoid the flu altogether? Here are some good habits that help you

avoid the flu:

Avoid close contact to people who are sick. Also, when you are sick, keep your distance

from others to prevent them from getting sick as well.

Stay at home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands

when you are sick.

Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth nose when you cough or sneeze.

Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will protect you from getting germs. If soap

and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches

something that is contaminated with germs and then touches their eyes, nose, or

mouth.

Practice good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home,

work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically ac-

tive, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious foods.

One very important step in flu prevention is the flu shot. According to the CDC, people

should begin getting their flu shots around the end of October. Keep in mind that it takes

about 2 weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protec-

tion against the flu. Everyone 6 months or older should get a flu vaccine every season.

This is especially important in people who are at high risk of serious complications from

the flu. Getting the vaccination has some important benefits. It can reduce your chance of

getting the flu, avoid flu related doctor’s visits, and missed work or school due to illness,

and prevent flu related hospitalizations. The CDC recommends use of injectable influenza

vaccines, and not the spray flu vaccine for the 2016 – 2017 season.

Hopefully you won’t get the flu, however here are some signs and symptoms:

Fever of feeling feverish/chills

Cough

Sore throat

Runny or stuffy nose

Muscle or body aches

Headaches

Fatigued

Some people may have vomiting or diarrhea, although this is more common in

children than adults.

If you do get the flu the CDC recommends the following:

Take antiviral drugs, if prescribed by a doctor.

Take everyday precautions to protect others while sick. Such as limiting contact

with others as much as possible, covering your nose and mouth when you

cough, washing your hands often with soap and water, and make sure to clean

and disinfect surfaces or objects that may be contaminated.

Stay home until you are feeling better, or for at least 24 hours after your fever is

gone.

Let’s have a healthy and happy rainy season!

Calling all Learning ARTS Clinics! You are challenged to create the

best, most creative decorations to adorn your front lobby of your

Clinics! You will be given one month to complete your works of art

and send in a photo of your front lobby. Next month, In the Decem-

ber Edition of the newsletter all Learning ARTS employees will get

a chance to vote on which lobby looks the best! In the January

Newsletter, the winner will be announced and the Winners will get

an ice cream party for their clinic!

Sounds fun right? Okay, here are a few guidelines about the con-

test:

1.All clinics are given the theme “Winter Wonderland” for their

front Lobbies.

2. For Decorations, they must be made by the kids, NO ADULT

MADE DECORATIONS! Adults are allowed to put a sign up

that says “Winter Wonderland” but the rest must be made by

the children.

3. Clinics must turn in a photo of their lobby by November 30th.

Email [email protected] to send in the photo.
