HIGH During the second half of this term we have completed a full range of Awards evenings and our Junior and Senior students have completed their various examinations – internal school examinations for Junior students and external NCEA assessments for Senior students. At the same time, the busy life of our school has continued unabated. Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh student and staff trips have departed; incoming Year 9 students have been assessed and involved in welcoming transition and familiarisation processes into Whanganui High School; our cricketers have performed well in tournaments; our athletics team achieved significant success at the national secondary schools’ athletics championships; and all our Junior students have continued to participate fully in all House and individual recognition activities. Our school breathes and lives our LIFE values: Learning, Integrity, Fellowship, Excellence. At the Junior Prizegiving on Tuesday, 11 December the new Whanganui High School House Champions Shield was awarded to the winning House from the four new Houses: Awa, Maunga, Moana, Whenua. At the time of writing this newsletter for publication, the House winner has not yet been announced but check out our school website www.whanganuihigh.school.nz for all the latest details. This proudly continues a family tradition for Sophia’s family. SOPHIA ‘UNGA-CRIBB Our sharpshooting champ, Bradley has won the ‘New Zealand Champion Cowboy’ title for the second year in a row at the Shooting Nationals. Ranked 7th in the world open section, Bradley will be one to watch out for at next year’s Nationals competition which will be held in Whanganui. BRADLEY MCDOWELL BRIANNA WALKER Well done to Brianna Walker who received the inaugural Wynne Costley Research Scholarship Award from the National Council of Women. To gain the scholarship Brianna completed a research assignment about Kate Sheppard and the suffrage movement. Other Senior prize-winners were Hannah Lawler 2nd and Rhian Robertson (Merit) with Olivia Bedwell and Sophie Bedwell placed equal first in the Junior section. WHS 1ST XI BOYS CRICKET TEAM Our jet-setting Judo superstar Keightley has had outstanding performances at the recent NZ Nationals where he impressively won six golds over three divisions, including the New Zealand Senior Open Weight Champions Cup! Also, at the Bahamas World Champs and Perth Oceania Open Keightley added a collection of medals to his name, and is now ranked 156th in Senior Men and 8th in Junior Men Divisions in the world.
