Introduction
LEARNER JOURNEYS
THERE IS a wealth of information available regarding qualifications from different providers using terminology that is specific to the education sector. This can often lead to confusing messages for those providing advice and support to learners or indeed for learners themselves to understand. The purpose of this guide is to provide information by occupational sector on the progression routes available to learners at Borders College. The Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF) on page 4 provides the system to establish the level of difficulty of the qualification. The higher the SCQF Level, the greater the level of difficulty. This Learner Journey booklet provides the potential routes learners can travel as they build their knowledge and skills and achieve qualifications. Learners can start and finish at various points on this journey depending on their existing qualifications, skills and experience. I hope this provides a clear explanation of our qualifications and that it helps you decide on your own learner journey.

About SCQF Levels
THE SCOTTISH Credit and Qualifications Framework has 12 levels. The different levels indicate the level of difficulty of a particular qualification. The Level Descriptors outline the general outcomes of learning at SCQF levels under five broad headings:
• knowledgeandunderstanding(mainlysubjectbased);• practice(appliedknowledgeandunderstanding);• genericcognitiveskills(e.g.evaluation,criticalanalysis);• communication,numeracyandITskills;and• autonomy,accountabilityandworkingwithothers.
The Descriptors allow broad comparisons to be made between qualifications and learning and allow learners, employers and the public in general to understand the range of skills and learning that should be achieved at each level.
This Framework diagram has been produced to show the mainstream Scottish qualifications already credit rated by SQA and HEIs. However, there are a diverse number of learning programmes on the Framework, which, due to the limitations of this format, cannot be represented here.
