Learner-Centered Approaches
Learner-centered Approaches that I will use to improve the learning of my students in Horticultural Methods 2 course will include:
Discussion Board Journal/Blogs Flipped Classroom Problem Based Learning
Learning Outcome 1:
Demonstrate the biological theory of plant propagation and develop the concept of propagating plants in various environmental conditions.
Learner-centered Approaches: Discussion board Journal/Blogs
Learning Outcome 1:
Previous Knowledge: Discussion • All students will participate in class writing the key
words and/or terms related to plant biology and plant life and growth from their previous knowledge
Discussion and questions follow the class
Learning Outcome 1:
Learner-centered Approaches: Discussion Board• Create discussion board on web using software
like “Blackboard’ and create ending questions on the discussion board from previous class discussion notes
• This will encourage thinking skills, and gain learning from others knowledge to built concepton plant biology and life cycle
• Students evaluation associated with posting on the discussion board to motivate student participation
Learning Outcome 1:
Learner-centered Approaches: Journal/Blogs
• Students will create a shared journal and blog, using Google Drive.
• This will help students interact more with other students and learn faster through the shared documents
• Instructors evaluation can happen faster and provide students feedback promptly using these learning processes
Learning Outcome 2:
Practice different methods of vegetative propagation in horticultural crops.
Learner-Centered Approach: Flipped Classroom
Learning Outcome 2:
Currently:• Instructor facilitate discussion on previous based
learning and concept built
Learning Outcome 2:
Learner-Centered Approach: Flipped Classroom
• Discussion and provide access to videos on plant propagation during class
• Students independently learn and perform plant propagation techniques in class lab
• This will help students learn through visual learning process and practice techniques in lab: more instructor facilitation than lecturing
• Students evaluation associated with steps and procedures and performing successful plant propagation in class lab
Learning Outcome 3:
Examine and evaluate plant growth development under differential stress/environmental conditions.
Learner-Centered Approach: Problem-Based Learning
Learning Outcome 3:
Currently:• All students will participate in class discussion
relating factors affecting plant growth and development
Learning Outcome 3:
Learner-Centered Approach: Problem-Based Learning
• Plant provided with different environmental stress in class lab
• Student start gathering information online pertaining to stress related sign and symptoms in plants
• Identify different types of stress and examine, differentiate, and evaluate different situations
• Students to solve problem and evaluate independently giving practical life experience
• Students evaluation associated with steps and procedures in environmental stress evaluation
