Whether youre a busy parent and/or workingfull time, we know it can be diffi cult to fitlearning into your life. At learndirect, we want

your learning experience to be flexible.

Some of our courses and qualifications give youthe option to do your learning either at homeor in one of our centres around the country.Theyre slightly different in pace and youll get

support throughout your learning.

How can I learn?

In one of our centresIf you enrol for your qualification through one ofour centres, youll get face-to-face support fromour friendly staff. When learning in a centre,there will be elements of online learning as partof the qualification. In most cases youll be ableto continue your learning from home, work oranywhere you have an internet connection.

During your learning, youll have regularprogress reviews with your tutor at your centre(or by phone or email) to make sure youre ontrack with your learning.

Learning through a centre is flexible, so howlong it takes depends on your needs andcircumstances.

Through our centres you can get aqualification in: life skills, job seeking and work skills

everyday skills like maths, English and IT vocational qualifications*.

At workIf you want to learn on the job, we can help -whether youre in work already or are looking fora job.

Apprenticeshipsare work-based, so youll earna salary while you learn. If you dont have a job

yet, dont worry - for most subjects we can helpyou find an employer to do your Apprenticeship

with. Theyre also a great option if yourealready in employment and looking to improve

your prospects. Apprenticeships are available toanyone aged 16 and over.

Most of your learning will be done on the jobwith some elements of online learning as partof the qualification. Your trainer assessor willsupport you throughout by visiting you at work,by phone or through interactive online support.Apprenticeships generally take between 12and 24 months. Our Traineeshipsare perfect if youre aged 16-24 and want to get the experience to kick start

your career and get noticed by an employer.Youll do a placement to give you the skillsthat employers are looking for and build yourconfidence for future jobs. Youll also have thechance to develop skills to prepare you forwork, or an Apprenticeship, including CV writing,

interview techniques, time management andproblem solving at work.

Our vocational certificates*can be completedmore quickly. Theyre ideal if youre alreadyworking, sponsored by an employer or doingvoluntary work or a work placement.

Youll be assessed on the day-to-day tasks youdo at work (or in a work-like setting) and youcan complete your learning from home, work,or anywhere you have an internet connection.

To make sure youre on track with your learning,youll have regular progress reviews with yourtutor which can be done face-to-face at one ofour centres, as well as by phone and email.

How long it takes depends on your needs andcircumstances. On average, it takes around sixto nine months to gain a vocational certificate.

OnlineWhether you choose to learn in a centre or atwork, many of our courses have elements ofonline learning as part of the qualification. Thismeans in most cases youll be able to continueyour learning from home, work, or anywhereyou have an internet connection. As you lookthrough this course guide this will be indicatedwith the online symbol listed next to thequalification title.

How do I know which qualification is rightfor me?Before you enrol with us, well check which typeand level of qualification you should be workingtowards. If you want to complete a qualificationthrough your job well look at whats rightwith your employer. Well also check whatqualifications and skills you already have, so wecan put together the right mix of learning foryou. This means you only do the courses you

need to - so you dont have to learn what youalready know.

What will it cost?A lot of our qualifications wont cost youa penny. Depending on what level youwill be working towards and your age,your qualification could be funded by thegovernment, or you could be eligible fora 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. For somequalifications, there might be a charge. Seepage 34 to find out more.

Finding a job can be tough, especially if youdont have much work experience. Oftenemployers want people with previous workhistory, but how do you get this experience inthe first place?

Our Traineeships give 16 24 year-olds theopportunity to develop workplace skills andexperience, and put you in a better position to

compete for an Apprenticeship or job. Theresno need to worry, we can help you to takethat first step and kick start your career with aTraineeship.

Are you looking to get into dental nursing?

Or maybe youre one of the more than 11,000dental nurses currently working without aqualification?

Since 2008 dental nurses have to hold or beworking towards a qualification recognised bythe General Dental Council (GDC), but theresa shortage of courses leading to qualificationsfor GDC registration. Thats where we can help -our Dental Nursing Advanced Apprenticeship isaccepted for registration with the GDC.

A Dental Nursing Apprenticeship can lead toexciting job prospects too! Research* carriedout in the dentistry sector and analysis of theindustrys future trends found that dental nurseswere the most recruited-for role in 2010/11,with 50 per cent of dentists having recruited adental nurse. You could be working in doctorssurgeries, hospitals, the armed forces or workingwith the community. You can also go on tofurther training to become a hygienist, dentaltherapist or orthodontic therapist.

English Awards

Functional Skills in EnglishWell help you gain the essential skills you needto make communicating easier at work and athome, and youll get a qualification too.

Youll cover subjects such as: reading writing grammar and punctuation spelling vocabulary speaking and listening.

You can also do different sized qualifications ateach level, depending on your learning needs.This could mean your qualification might onlyneed to cover a few subjects like spelling orwriting. Or you may need to focus on a broaderrange of English subjects.

How will I learn?Youll enrol for your qualification through oneof our centres, meaning you get face-to-facesupport from our friendly staff. But you can

then continue to learn from home, work, oranywhere you have an internet connection.

During your learning, youll have regular

Our English award will help you apply yourEnglish skills in a practical way. Its assessedthrough coursework, and once youve finishedall your courses and completed your tasks andactivities, your work will be assessed by City &Guilds to gain your qualification.

Alternatively, by taking the functional skills

route, you will take an exam. Your tutor will helpyou with practice test activities to make sureyoure prepared. Exams are taken when youreready, so you dont have to wait for a specificdate.

All about Apprenticeships

How does an Apprenticeship work?An Apprenticeship is completed on the job, so you get hands-on experience and real money. Its agreat way into lots of careers, including business, finance, IT, retail, hospitality, childcare, health andsocial care and dental nursing. The list keeps on growing!

An Apprenticeship is also a great option if youre already in employment and looking to improveyour prospects. Apprenticeships are available to anyone 16 and over. How will you learn?

An Apprenticeship is usuallymade up of three parts, all completed on the job or online so you wontbe stuck in a classroom.

Doing an Apprenticeship seemedlike a great way to continuelearning but being able to work andearn some money at the same

A lot of our courses and qualifications wont cost you a penny.

Depending on what level you want to work towards and your age, your qualification could be fundedby the government or you could be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. For some qualifications,there might be a charge.

If you are learning in one of ourcentres:thanks to government funding,these courses are free for most learners. This

includes our maths, English, life skills, job seekingand employability skills as well as some ITqualifications.
