HOW TO STITCH SARI BLOUSE

Learn to stitch the indian sari blouse used for sari costume. The method to stitch a blouse is very easy.

The pattern is useful in stitching a cut blouse.

Lets use a readymade measurement to stitch the blouse (refer above diagram). I have used measurements in

centimeter, You can do it with inch measurement.

* chest = 91 cm

* full length = 38 cm

* Across back = 35 cm

* sleeve length = 25 cm

FRONT PART

* A - B = full length = 38 cm

* A-C = arm hole = (chest/4)-4 = (91-4)/4 = 18.7 cm

* C-D = chest loose = (chest/4)+2.5 = (91/4)+2.5 = 25.2 cm

* A-I = front part = chest/3 = 91/3 = 30.3cm

* A-E = shoulder = AB/2 = 35/2 = 17.5 cm

* A-F = Neck Breadth = (chest/12)+1.5 = 9 cm

* A-H = Front Neck = chest/8 = 11.3 cm

* K-B = patti part = full length-front part=7.7 cm

PATTI PART (K-B part in the above diagram)

Page 2: Learn Stitching_ How to Stitch Sari Blouse 1

* A-C = full length = 11 cm

* A-B = patti width

SLEEVE PART

* A-B = sleeve length = (chest/4)+2.5

* A-C = sleeve width = (chest/4)+2.5

* E-D = (chest/4-4)

Now let's see how to stitch the sari blouse. Before going to stitch the real material , we'll draw the stitching pattern. I

have used chart paper to draw the stitching pattern. If u want to stitch a blouse of your size, take a sample blouse

you already have and take the measurements using inch tape. It is nessesary to draw stitching patterns for both front

and back side .

BACK PART PATTERN

The curve on the right is the arm hole while the other curve is neck.

FRONT PART PATTERN

First draw a pattern same as the back side then from the top measure 12 inch and draw a straight line. You can see a

straight line drawn at a distance of 12 inch from the shoulder. The distance can vary from 12 to 13 inch based on the breast

size . A normal women can draw a line at distance of 12" else 13".

Next measure 1/2 inch from the horizontal line and mark it. Likewise measure 1/2 inch above the horizontal line on both the

extremes. Now as shown in the above diagram draw a neat curve along the points . I've drawn the curve in blue colour. Next

step is to cut along the blue line like the one below. The image below shows the front and the back part pattern together.

Front part is cut into 2 parts. In the first part we have to sew darts then attach the patti part(2nd part) to the front piece.

In the above image i've drawn the darts . Those are the places where you have to sew darts.Now let's see how to sew darts

using the cloth. Then take the material to stitch blouse. Below is the material i have used. Fold the cloth to the exact

breadth size of the pattern once as shown in the figure . Then mark the edges with marking chalk. Next carefully cut the

edges without disturbing them. Make sure the neck part is placed on the folded side.

Page 4: Learn Stitching_ How to Stitch Sari Blouse 1

After unfolding you can see both sides of the blouse.

Then 2 small darts have to stitched at the back part straight to the shoulders.

Then the main three darts have to be stitched carefully in the front part. Look at the stitching pattern diagram above for the

three main darts. The dart stitched at the bottom should be bigger that the 2 darts at the left and right sides. Darts at the

back part and front part are stitched.

Next to the front part , the patti part has to be stitched. After stitching the three main dots , the front part has to be stitched

to the patti part. The patti part should have the remaining length so that it equals the back part.

Page 5: Learn Stitching_ How to Stitch Sari Blouse 1

Now the patti part is stitched to the main part. See to that both back and front parts are of same length. Then make sure

you fold around the bottom line.

Next the front parts have to be joined to the back part. Just do that by stitching the shoulders correctly.

Next sleeve part is cut and attached to the arm. There are 2 options to stitch sleeve, you can join the sides then stitch the

sleeve else you can stitch the sleeve and then join the sides. It depends on your comfort level. To cut the sleeve use ur

model blouse for size. Just fold the cloth once and place the model sleeve on it, then draw the shape and cut it.

After the sleeve part is stitched, the neck crosspeice has to be stitched and then hooks have to be stitched. Finally we

finish the complete blouse like this. Try and send your feedback.

hi thanks for the comment. well stitching darts does not have exact measurements. just sitch a big dart of 1 inch breadth and 2(1/2)inch length straight to the

shoulder, next two small darts from the armhole and the side where you place buttons.

so all three darts point towards the center forming a cone shape.i'll soon write a post on darts to get a clear idea. thank u . have any more querries feel free to

comment.

March 31, 2009 5:48 PM

THAZNIM said...

shoulder is the extension from neck. use inch tape and measure your shoulder fully. then to draw pattern u need on half the shoulder measurement. then decide

the breadth of shoulder and mark it (2 to 3(1/2)inch).

refer the pattern i've given the shoulder measurement.

May 7, 2009 10:59 PM

for a sleeveless one , give crosspiece to the armhole as u do for neck . take a look at the crosspiece post. for strapless one , u need not cut material for the

straps , u have to cut the part covering the breast. Draw the pattern clearly then cut.

Thank you Tazmin for posting this. I am going to do it for the first time. clarification on some points would be very helpful for me plz...

a) from the stensil diagram under subhead 'FRONT PART' when you say K-B is the full length minus the front part, it actually turns up to IB.. i am sure there is

some trick there which i am not able to pick up...

b) also when i make stencil for the front and the back.. the fron you have done already... how does the back vary from the front ?

c) under the subhead 'FRONT PART PATERN', according to the diagram you say to measure 12 icnhes down for patti... well in that case it has no reference to

the previously drawin stencil under subhead 'FRONT PART' ... i mean to say measurement wise...

d) also while cutting should some material be included for stitching ( i mean to stay cut it slightly bigger) or is that already accomodated ?

i am sorry if i sound dumb but i am extremely confused. i was all ready to start but then stopped to ask..

i look forard to your clarification. thank you in advance

Hi Thaznim, I am aslo Anu. I have studied your step by step guide on how to cut and sew a blouse but there is still confusion.Is there any possibility you can

draw each step of the measurements on a separate page to indicate a clear measurement.Also could you pls be a bit more specific with the darts as to from

where to where and how long a dart should be. I believe like sewing a suit kameez it should be measured from the point of the shoulder to the breast nipple

and then down a certain length. The cutting of a neck shape and how to sew it.Also is there any possibility on a step by step diagram as to what each part

would look like after its been sewn. And lastly how to sew on the hooks.Your help is greatly appreciated.Regards Anu (UK)

measurement of ladies breasts is most important to stitch a perfect & decent blouse but you did not explain how to measure every spot of ladies breasts.I get

stitching my tight blouse from sunder tailor bombay.Whenever i get stitched my blouse from him,he first removed my blouse and then unhooks my bra .I dont

feel when he denudes me.After this ,he massages and elongate and twisted my breasts and nipples very hard for ten minutes with full force to made them well

swelled.Although i feel much pain but i enjoy very much on such developing my breasts. and then takes 10 minutes to measure every spot of my both breasts.I

think it is the right way of stitching blouses by the tailor masterWhen I wear such deep cut blouse, my halfe breasts are exposing from it and become up liftedI

and i lookink most decent in it and every body praised about my this blouse.It is a latest design blouse in which two ring holes are existedandmy both nipples

are emerged out fromthese blo/so i advise to all ladies to get stitched their blouses from sunder tailor bombay

Hi Thaznim,

Useful blog. I have been stitching all my salwar kammeezes and short tops and skirts since I was sixteen. I never attended any classes.

But I never tried a sari blouse - firstly I wear sari very rarely and secondly I felt it was too hard and complicated.

But after going through your blog, I feel I should now try stitching one.

Thanks for the information.

Good luck with your activities.
