Shop ConroeLast year, the City of Conroe mayor and city council
honored one of Conroe’s own, Ken Hutchins, by declaringa “Ken Hutchins Day.” It was an award well deserved.Hutchins, a name familiar throughout the fitness industry,is widely known for his osteoporosis research. His worldfamous SuperSlow® Exercise protocol is available inConroe at Exercise Defined®.Kam Hutchins, Ken’s younger brother, knew at the age
of fourteen that someday he wanted to offer the highlyacclaimed strength training protocol. In 2006, Kam andhis wife, Vickie, both educators in Conroe ISD, opened thefirst SuperSlow® facility in the greater Houston area.“Exercise is a process whereby the body performs work
of ademandingnature, in accordancewithmuscle and jointfunction, within the constraints of safety, meaningfullyloading the muscular structures to inroad their strengthlevels to stimulate a growth mechanism within minimumtime,” Kam explains to clients.Jean Stewart, Ed.D., contacted Kam about six years ago.“Moving into semi-retirement, I want to not only
maintain my good health, but I also want to have strengthfor mobility,” Dr. Stewart said. The former Deputy Superintendent of Conroe ISD
believes accountability is tantamount to achieving hergoal.“I go to Exercise Defined for two thirty-minute sessions
each week,” she said. “While there I know that what I’mdoing is correct. There is always an instructor workingwith me, helping me tweak my routine, making sure thatI’m receiving the best results.”It came as no surprise to Dr. Stewart when her doctor
informed her that the early beginning of osteopenia, aprecursor to osteoporosis, which had been detected yearsearlier, was now no longer indicated. There is more than just personal attention to each
client’s needs.“Safety, safety, safety, is essential,” Kam impresses;
thus, a certified personal instructor monitors each client’sspeed of motion and form. A timer is used at eachmachinefor the prescribed time in order for the participant to bemonitored at each station. In an independent study conducted at a major U.S.
university, researchers found that resistance exercisereverses aging in human skeletal muscle.“Before exercise training, older adults were weaker than
younger adults, but after six months of training, olderadults’ strength improved significantly,” Peter Wenner,Emory University. For local dermatologist, Dr. Amy Farmer, who’s trained
at Exercise Defined for the past year, SuperSlow® machinesand the protocol are unconventional and can be prescribedfor any patient.“Themechanics of KenHutchins’ machines are brilliant.
They remind me of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions,” Dr.Farmer stated. “In a nutshell, SuperSlow® is the fountainof youth: for the bones to prevent osteoporosis, for themuscles to prevent atrophy and weakness, for the mindto encourage change and aspiration – and for the heartit’s vascularly effective. I also like the name - SuperSlow®,because it’s the only thing that I do that’s slow!”Missi Fletcher, Judy Robert, Marilyn Moore, Steve
Kasmiersky, Kathy HutchinsDaniel and Kam are amongthe elite group of thousandsof instructors worldwide whoKen has personally certified, and who offer personal one-on-one training with theirclients. Currently, Julie Stewartis in training to becomecertified. Each machine istailor-set to meet the needsof the participant. Amongthe specialized equipment atExercised Defined® is one ofonly ten Linear Spine machinesin the world. The resistancecurve of all machines matchesthe strength curve of the muscle.Unlike other workout
programs which incorporateweight lifting, andareperformedwith quick and jerky repetitions,it was Ken Hutchins’ researchwhich led to his own patentedprotocol, SuperSlow®. Theprotocol for each station laststhree minutes and is practicedat a slow rate. Although thetraining is highly intense, clientscan exercise comfortably inthe workout area which hastemperature maintained at acool 68 degrees. Many clientsarrive at the facility directlyfrom the office and without abag full of workout clothing. When Cherrie Darden
Watson’s brother came for a visita few months ago, she expressedconcern over losing tone and
mobility. Cherrie’s brother, Ellington Darden, noted expertand author on fitness, knew immediately who Cherrieshould contact.“We are going to see Kam Hutchins,” he told her.“Time was a major concern for me,” Cherrie, a math
specialist at Reaves Elementary said. “I have a career, I hada house for sale, there were just so many demands on mytime.”Cherrie found immediately that the 30-minute protocol
was perfect for her busy lifestyle.“Before I began the program, I had started to notice
that when I climbed stairs, I would feel a bit weak in myknees. If I had been sitting in the floor working with youngstudents, I had begun to use my hands to bring myselfback to standing position,” she said. “Almost immediately,I began to notice a difference, and I also respect theirattention to my schedule.”From the moment she arrives at Exercise Defined, she
begins to work with a personal instructor.“There is no down time,” she added. “Wemove from one
machine to the next and this is an added benefit because itis a great cardio workout also.”Although there is a standard protocol, Cherrie notes
that the instructors make sure that any problems she mayexpress are addressed and that she receives attention to allof her muscle groups.Although strength andfitness aredominant components
for clients at Exercise Defined®, many clients come forother reasons: some for recovery from injury, others forboosting their metabolism.“We have clients who have successfully lost weight
because their bodies’ metabolism has shifted intooverdrive with the addition of muscle,” Kam explains. Hefurther added, “And we have had frail folks who initiallyhave entered our doors with the use of walkers and canesand after a while they find they no longer need the aids.”Business is on a brisk pace at Exercise Defined®.
Participants are delighted to find that the individualtraining is offered at affordable rates. The facility is located on Longmire Road. Kam and his
professionally trained staff welcome the opportunity towork with clients and to discuss training times which aresuitable for the client’s personal needs.“The first investment people want to make is in
themselves,” Kam explained. “All it takes is a minimal costand 20-30 minutes to achieve that goal.”

Native Conroe resident Ken Hutchins was an all-statetrumpet player when he attended Conroe High School in thelate sixties. The son of Dr. M.G. Hutchins, Jr., who practicedmedicine in Conroe for many years,Ken always looked for ways toimprove his performance. Whenhis friend, Dr. Philip Alexander,a professional-caliber oboist, suggested lifting weights, Ken beganworking out.
Ken later majored in biology atTexas Tech University, but it washis interest in physical fitness thatultimately shaped the course of hiscareer.
When Ken attended Philip’swedding, he introduced him toanother Conroe High Schoolgraduate, Ellington Darden,an esteemed athlete who would later become Mr. Texas.Ellington eventually became research director at NautilusSports/Medical Industries, where Ken joined him as atechnical writer.
While heading a research project in 1982, Ken began tomake his mark on the fitness industry. For five years, he andhiswife, Brenda, studied the effects of exercise on osteoporosisin Nautilus funded research that came to be known as theworld’s cornerstone osteoporosis study. It has been creditedfor revealing the role of strength training in preventingosteoporosis. However, it also had another surprising result.
During his research, Ken realized that there wereinherent problems when participants performed jerky, quickrepetitions. Momentum-not muscle strength-powered muchof the lifting; in addition, it caused disproportionate muscle
development and contributed to injuries.Ken soon discovered that muscle strength was best
increased when participants lifted weights slowly, smoothlyand evenly. His research eventuallyled to his own patented protocol,SuperSlow®.
Over the years Ken continued hisresearch and now resides in Florida.
The SuperSlow® protocol hasbeen featured in many publications, including Newsweek magazine,Vogue magazine, and The WallStreet Journal. Many studieshave shown the effectivenessof SuperSlow®, including oneconducted by Dr. Alexandra Sängerof the University of Salzburg. Shepraised strength training protocolsfor their effect on menopausal
women with particularly high praise for SuperSlow®: “Ourresults indicate that bothmethods increasemusclemass at theexpense of connective and fatty tissue, but….the SuperSlow®method appears to have the greatest effect. We believe thatthe changes that this new insight can bring to current trainingsystems will have considerable effect on bothmenopausal andolder women.”
Kencontinueshis research inFloridawithhisnewly formedcompany, Renaissance Exercise, LTD, (RenEx). Additionally,Ken just released a new book, “TheRenaissance of Exercise: AVitruvian Adventure.” SuperSlow® exercise and equipment isevolving into Renaissance Exercise.
