Shop Conroe Last year, the City of Conroe mayor and city council honored one of Conroe’s own, Ken Hutchins, by declaring a “Ken Hutchins Day.” It was an award well deserved. Hutchins, a name familiar throughout the fitness industry, is widely known for his osteoporosis research. His world famous SuperSlow® Exercise protocol is available in Conroe at Exercise Defined®. Kam Hutchins, Ken’s younger brother, knew at the age of fourteen that someday he wanted to offer the highly acclaimed strength training protocol. In 2006, Kam and his wife, Vickie, both educators in Conroe ISD, opened the first SuperSlow® facility in the greater Houston area. “Exercise is a process whereby the body performs work of a demanding nature, in accordance with muscle and joint function, within the constraints of safety, meaningfully loading the muscular structures to inroad their strength levels to stimulate a growth mechanism within minimum time,” Kam explains to clients. Jean Stewart, Ed.D., contacted Kam about six years ago. “Moving into semi-retirement, I want to not only maintain my good health, but I also want to have strength for mobility,” Dr. Stewart said. e former Deputy Superintendent of Conroe ISD believes accountability is tantamount to achieving her goal. “I go to Exercise Defined for two thirty-minute sessions each week,” she said. “While there I know that what I’m doing is correct. ere is always an instructor working with me, helping me tweak my routine, making sure that I’m receiving the best results.” It came as no surprise to Dr. Stewart when her doctor informed her that the early beginning of osteopenia, a precursor to osteoporosis, which had been detected years earlier, was now no longer indicated. ere is more than just personal attention to each client’s needs. “Safety, safety, safety, is essential,” Kam impresses; thus, a certified personal instructor monitors each client’s speed of motion and form. A timer is used at each machine for the prescribed time in order for the participant to be monitored at each station. In an independent study conducted at a major U.S. university, researchers found that resistance exercise reverses aging in human skeletal muscle. “Before exercise training, older adults were weaker than younger adults, but aſter six months of training, older adults’ strength improved significantly,” Peter Wenner, Emory University. For local dermatologist, Dr. Amy Farmer, who’s trained at Exercise Defined for the past year, SuperSlow® machines and the protocol are unconventional and can be prescribed for any patient. “e mechanics of Ken Hutchins’ machines are brilliant. ey remind me of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions,” Dr. Farmer stated. “In a nutshell, SuperSlow® is the fountain of youth: for the bones to prevent osteoporosis, for the muscles to prevent atrophy and weakness, for the mind to encourage change and aspiration – and for the heart it’s vascularly effective. I also like the name - SuperSlow®, because it’s the only thing that I do that’s slow!” Missi Fletcher, Judy Robert, Marilyn Moore, Steve Kasmiersky, Kathy Hutchins Daniel and Kam are among the elite group of thousands of instructors worldwide who Ken has personally certified, and who offer personal one- on-one training with their clients. Currently, Julie Stewart is in training to become certified. Each machine is tailor-set to meet the needs of the participant. Among the specialized equipment at Exercised Defined® is one of only ten Linear Spine machines in the world. e resistance curve of all machines matches the strength curve of the muscle. Unlike other workout programs which incorporate weight liſting, and are performed with quick and jerky repetitions, it was Ken Hutchins’ research which led to his own patented protocol, SuperSlow®. e protocol for each station lasts three minutes and is practiced at a slow rate. Although the training is highly intense, clients can exercise comfortably in the workout area which has temperature maintained at a cool 68 degrees. Many clients arrive at the facility directly from the office and without a bag full of workout clothing. When Cherrie Darden Watson’s brother came for a visit a few months ago, she expressed concern over losing tone and mobility. Cherrie’s brother, Ellington Darden, noted expert and author on fitness, knew immediately who Cherrie should contact. “We are going to see Kam Hutchins,” he told her. “Time was a major concern for me,” Cherrie, a math specialist at Reaves Elementary said. “I have a career, I had a house for sale, there were just so many demands on my time.” Cherrie found immediately that the 30-minute protocol was perfect for her busy lifestyle. “Before I began the program, I had started to notice that when I climbed stairs, I would feel a bit weak in my knees. If I had been sitting in the floor working with young students, I had begun to use my hands to bring myself back to standing position,” she said. “Almost immediately, I began to notice a difference, and I also respect their attention to my schedule.” From the moment she arrives at Exercise Defined, she begins to work with a personal instructor. “ere is no down time,” she added. “We move from one machine to the next and this is an added benefit because it is a great cardio workout also.” Although there is a standard protocol, Cherrie notes that the instructors make sure that any problems she may express are addressed and that she receives attention to all of her muscle groups. Although strength and fitness are dominant components for clients at Exercise Defined®, many clients come for other reasons: some for recovery from injury, others for boosting their metabolism. “We have clients who have successfully lost weight because their bodies’ metabolism has shiſted into overdrive with the addition of muscle,” Kam explains. He further added, “And we have had frail folks who initially have entered our doors with the use of walkers and canes and aſter a while they find they no longer need the aids.” Business is on a brisk pace at Exercise Defined®. Participants are delighted to find that the individual training is offered at affordable rates. e facility is located on Longmire Road. Kam and his professionally trained staff welcome the opportunity to work with clients and to discuss training times which are suitable for the client’s personal needs. “e first investment people want to make is in themselves,” Kam explained. “All it takes is a minimal cost and 20-30 minutes to achieve that goal.” Exercise Defined, Inc.® A Licensed SuperSlow® Facility “Minutes a week, in shape for life” 6440 Longmire Road (1.5 miles north of FM 3083) 936-756-2111 Exercise Defined® offers affordable rates for world-renowned training “SuperSlow ® exercise will make the most impact on mankind’s health for the next century.” – e Year in Ideas 2001: Special Edition of the New York Times. Hutchins, Jr., who practiced medicine in Conroe for many years, Ken always looked for ways to improve his performance. When his friend, Dr. Philip Alexander, a professional-caliber oboist, suggested liſting weights, Ken began working out. Ken later majored in biology at Texas Tech University, but it was his interest in physical fitness that ultimately shaped the course of his career. When Ken attended Philip’s wedding, he introduced him to another Conroe High School graduate, Ellington Darden, an esteemed athlete who would later become Mr. Texas. Ellington eventually became research director at Nautilus Sports/Medical Industries, where Ken joined him as a technical writer. While heading a research project in 1982, Ken began to make his mark on the fitness industry. For five years, he and his wife, Brenda, studied the effects of exercise on osteoporosis in Nautilus funded research that came to be known as the world’s cornerstone osteoporosis study. It has been credited for revealing the role of strength training in preventing osteoporosis. However, it also had another surprising result. During his research, Ken realized that there were inherent problems when participants performed jerky, quick repetitions. Momentum-not muscle strength-powered much of the liſting; in addition, it caused disproportionate muscle development and contributed to injuries. Ken soon discovered that muscle strength was best increased when participants liſted weights slowly, smoothly and evenly. His research eventually led to his own patented protocol, SuperSlow®. Over the years Ken continued his research and now resides in Florida. e SuperSlow® protocol has been featured in many publications, including Newsweek magazine, Vogue magazine, and e Wall Street Journal. Many studies have shown the effectiveness of SuperSlow®, including one conducted by Dr. Alexandra Sänger of the University of Salzburg. She praised strength training protocols for their effect on menopausal women with particularly high praise for SuperSlow®: “Our results indicate that both methods increase muscle mass at the expense of connective and fatty tissue, but….the SuperSlow® method appears to have the greatest effect. We believe that the changes that this new insight can bring to current training systems will have considerable effect on both menopausal and older women.” Ken continues his research in Florida with his newly formed company, Renaissance Exercise, LTD, (RenEx). Additionally, Ken just released a new book, “e Renaissance of Exercise: A Vitruvian Adventure.” SuperSlow® exercise and equipment is evolving into Renaissance Exercise.
