In Hot Tips & Cold Shots.Fieldcraft.Thermal Detection, there are somepretty gloomy postings about IR detection. s anelectrical utility thermographer, I might shed some light !pun intended" onthe sub#ect. To $ualify this, I am using the latest !Ithin%" commercially aailable F'IR product, and am a leel II thermographer,!total formal IR training( ) *ee%s+eperienceusing IR e$uipment( about - years." I beliee I am at least familiar *ithIR. ranted, my life is not depending on aoiding IR

detection, so I guess I can hae my opinions pretty safely. These are myobserations about IR imagers using ciiliane$uipment and are.. /#ust my opinion/. It0s up to you and yours to chec%them out in your *orld.

This is 12 brief, beliee it or not. nyone interested can email formore. This is about TH3R4' detection, not IRilluminating sources for /starlight/ scopes.

IR is not 5ray, Holly*ood bedamned+it cannot detect a differential heatimage through common solid materials, plasticfilm !blac% or other*ise" being an eception. Ho*eer, a good imager systemcan see through holes in a mas%ing material!/IR mas%ing/ camo net". nd if you are inside a dumpster, bodyheating the

bad guy0s side, he can /see/ the hot spot on thedumpster0s outside. 6ut if you are not leaning !heating" against that side,he can0t /see you/. 2our body heat *ill not bedetected behind most readily aailable unholed blinding materials if you arenot differentially *arming7cooling thosematerials or allo*ing your o*n IR to reflect off of something behind7oeryou. 68T, if the shielding materials are alien to thesurroundings, the material itself *ill probably stand out. See belo*.

lass *ill not allo* your TH3R4' image to transmit !pass" through9 sameas the dumpster scenario. The lenses of IRimagers are made of eotic nonglass materials because of this.

3ery piece !cluster" of matter, including gasses, emits IR if it is

aboe bsolute :ero !minus ;-b#ects *ith different Temperatures and the right 30s could /loo%/the same, thus forming ?> image. T*o ob#ects*ith similar temperatures and similar emissiities *ill present an unclear,

poorly defined image. Herein lies your IR strength.

Here are some 3missiity alues for a fe* materials, all in percents,

all plus7minus a point or t*o. These are for short*aelength commercial imagers and may ary slightly for long *aelength7longrange military7'3 e$uipment. 4ilitary techiesshould hae similar emissiity tables for your e$uipment.

    eaporation.

The name of this game is to %eep both the 3missiity and the Temperatureof the screen and clothing the same as that ofthe surroundings and %eep those portals small.

If you are on bare clay or grael !G+;" and are *orried about aerialobseration, dig in. Coer yourself *ith almost

anything sufficiently rigid and then coer it *ith at least a thin but fulllayer of the local /dirt/. This *ill match the 30s. >ncethe moisture of the ne* coer layer e$uals the moisture of the surfacearound you !eaporatie cooling", you *ill be in decentshape IR *ise. Remember that these lo* 3 materials hae a highReflectiity, so bloc% your o*n IR from getting out fromunder the coer. If there is a chance your body heat *ill affect the topsurface of the dirt coer, use insulating material

bet*een you and the bottom of the /roof/ to %eep it the same temp as theground around you. Foam board or sleeping bags*ill do that. The most critical times of day for this hide *ould be as thesun changes, because rapid heating7cooling of a thinlayer of dirt *ill sho* up compared to the slo*er heating7cooling of theintact soil masses. If you can set up in a shaded spot

*here this *ill not occur, you should be in decent shape. If there is noshade, ma%e the coer layer thic% to create a heatsin% approaching that of the surroundings.

If there is no threat of aerial obseration, and it is only a frontalthreat, a /*all/ of local dirt *ith small portals *ould be the

    best bet.

ny ne* fohole *ill print either hot or cold depending on the seasonand surface temperature, een if the surrounding soilis bare. The deeper soil temp is probably closer to -- F than the surface.

    >n sno* !)+-", build a sno* fort or tunnel in and ma%e small portals.Try to dust loose sno* to duplicate surface

teture. ray for ne* sno*. If you *ore an aluminied face shield behindthat sno* fort, it *ould reflect the /cold/ off of thefort, and coer your hot face. This might be a shiny side application ofthe space blan%et, and could be *orth testing. 1ater!
