Established in 1987, am Language Studio is one of the first English Language Schools in Malta with a history of offering quality English Language courses and guaranteed customer satisfaction.

These correspond to the Common European Framework (CEF) which is a system of level indicators for language courses that is used throughout Europe. The most popular course at am Language Studio is designed to give students a solid introduction to the English language and devotes special attention to grammar, vocabulary building, conversation and pronunciation. While conventional texts and audio equipment form the basis of the lesson structure, teachers encourage language use through role-play, problem solving, discussions and story telling. The group element allows participants to benefit from trying out and practising language structures on their fellow students.

By devoting more hours to tuition students can give their English a kick-start in a relatively short period of time. Students follow the General English Course and have a further 2 sessions per day of 45 minutes each.

They are given the opportunity to consolidate their General English studies and have further options to cover new ground.

This course is designed to cover the same course content as outlined in our General English Course. It offers the benefit of studying in a group but with fewer numbers, so that students have more opportunity to actively participate during the lesson and get more teacher attention than they would in larger classes. Smaller numbers offer more flexibility in planning the course content around the individual needs of the participants.

Individual lessons offer students the opportunity to make their learning more focused and pertinent to their needs. With 1 to 1 lessons students have the full and continuous attention of the teacher, and the time to practise and go over areas of their choice, thus speeding up the learning process. Our Long Stay Courses offer students the opportunity to practise and develop their English language more thoroughly over an extensive period of time, focusing on fluency, grammar, vocabulary, conversation and pronunciation. Using modern course books and a wide range of our resource materials, they can expect to participate in pair and group work, and take on an active role in the classroom. The courses are designed to help students improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, increase their English vocabulary and give them more confidence with the English language. Long Stay / Academic Year Courses

Exam Preparation Courses

With the world fast becoming a smaller place, it is now more common for non-native English speakers to attend an English-speaking university, or to migrate to an English-speaking country. Students interested in sitting for an internationally recognised examination can take an Examination Preparation Course with am Language Studio covering the major examinations; the Cambridge Examination Courses plus IELTS, TOEFL, TOLES and WEFT. These courses are available all year round.

Courses vary from 4 to 12 weeks depending on the examination, and the needs and level of the applicant. Spread over 20, 25 or 30 sessions a week, each session being 45 minutes long, participants focus on grammar awareness and use of language. They develop their four skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking and also concentrate on more specific examination subject requirements.

BEC (Business English Certificate) Exam Preparation CourseBEC is offered at two levels, Vantage and Higher. BEC examinations are ideal, if students are preparing for a career in business. An internationally recognised business qualification can help them show that they have learned English to an appropriate standard and can use it in a professional context. The course covers all aspects of Business English with a focus on exam preparation for the BEC Cambridge exams. It includes writing reports, speaking on the phone, presenting in English and using formal vocabulary. The course is designed to give students all they need to interact through English in a business work environment and so open up job opportunities. This course is offered at Intermediate B1,Upper Intermediate B2 and Advanced C1 levels.

FCE (First Certificate in English) Exam Preparation CourseFCE is at Level 3 in the Cambridge five level system. This course has widespread recognition in commerce and industry such as public or secretarial work in banking, airlines, catering and hospitality. It is also recognised by some university faculties, colleges and other educational institutions as fulfilling English language requirements. This course is offered at Intermediate B1,And Upper Intermediate B2 levels.

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) Exam Preparation CourseCAE is at Level 4 in the Cambridge five level system. This course indicates a high level of language competence for candidates wishing to use English for professional or study purposes. It is recognised by the majority of British universities and higher education institutions as fulfilling entrance requirements in English language. This course is offered at Advanced C1 level.

CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) Exam Preparation CourseCPE is at Level 5 in the Cambridge five level system. This course indicates an advanced level of competence which is recognised as fulfilling entrance requirements in English language to British universities and many universities in other English-speaking countries, and by other institutions of higher education and professional bodies worldwide. In a number of countries the CPE provides exemption from local English language requirements, or is a qualification for admission to courses or employment where a thorough knowledge of English is required. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Exam Preparation CourseIELTS is administered jointly by The British Council, IDP Education Australia and the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Exam PreparationCourseThis is an American examination. TOEFL

scores are required for purposes of admission by more than 2,400 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. In Europe, TOEFL is also used by institutions where English is the language of instruction. Many government agencies, scholarship programmes, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.

TOLES (Test of Legal English Skills) Exam Preparation CourseThe TOLES examinations were developed to meet the demand from law firms, companies, legal institutions, lawyers and law students for an accurate method of assessing an individual’s legal English. TOLES has been developed by legal professionals with expertise in English language training. It is the result of extensive consultation with law firms and institutions, and is regularly revised to reflect the on-going changes that occur within the legal profession.

WEFT (Written English for Tourism) Exam Preparation CourseSet by LCCI (London Chamber of Commerce Institute), WEFT tests a candidate’s skills to communicate effectively in English at customer liaison level for the hospitality, travel and tourism industries.

It examines a student’s ability to work effectively at a professional level, using spoken and written business communication conducted in English.

e-Learning CoursesThe e-learning course has been developed as a follow-up course for students who have already attended an EFL course with am Language Studio at the levels indicated below. Having said this, families are not hotels and living with a family is, at times, a delicate thing. Bear in mind that you will be entering a family’s home and that you will have to integrate into their way of life. How will I learn English?

Practice the four skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing. Special attention is placed on Pronunciation practice throughout the course. A combination of all the necessary skills is important to achieve communicative fluency and accuracy. Written practice will help you remember what you have learnt and using the language in many social situations will not only give you confidence, but also help in developing your language proficiently.

By focusing on communication, our courses will help you increase your ability to speak and understand English. As a school specialising in teaching English as a foreign language, we know that every person’s needs are different. We promise to help you in the areas you need and follow your progress both during and, if requested, after your stay.

How will I be placed in a class?We determine your level with the help of the Placement Test and place you in class according to your results taking into consideration the level of writing fluency also: Beginner (A1), Elementary (A1/A2), Pre-Intermediate (A2/B1), Intermediate (B1), Upper-Intermediate (B2), or Advanced (C1). It is important that you are comfortable at your level to maximise results.

What are lessons like?The lessons are fun and interesting with lots of communicative activities involving pair work, group work,, role-play and debates. There is a good balance of grammar and vocabulary development. Topics are based on a range of interests adapted to suit practical English situations.

What will my teacher be like?Most of our teachers have taught with am Language Studio for at least eight years. Each teacher comes with his or her own experience and style of teaching. All our teachers are dedicated to their students and take a genuine interest in their needs and interests. Your teacher will encourage you, guide you and support you on your journey to improve your communication skills in English.

How can I improve my English outside of lesson time?We encourage you to read in English, you can borrow books from our library. Some of the books come with a CD, so you will be able to listen, as well as read which helps to improve listening skills. When lessons are over, you can join our leisure programme and meet up with your classmates and other students. This will give you the opportunity to continue to practice your spoken English.

How can I continue to improve my English when I go home?Learning a language is like exercising a muscle. If you do not practise, you are likely to forget what you have learnt.
