WELCOMEEach semester brings exciting new adventures and milestones at Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Besides the ever-changing beauty of the plants and displays in the outdoor gardens and conservatory, the facilities are growing due to your increasing engagement in Olbrich and its education programs. �e exciting building expansion project is currently underway and will be completed this fall. �e project includes the addition of dedicated education classrooms for our variety of early childhood through adult education programs and new environmentally-friendly, e�cient greenhouses. Stop by and see the construction progress in person, or visit www.olbrich.org for photographs and time-lapse video updates. In this semester’s catalog, you will find an incredible variety of learning opportunities for all ages, interests, and skill levels. Featuring 16 acres of outdoor gardens and a tropical conservatory, talented instructors, inspiring subject matter, and fun social connections, we invite you and your family to learn and experience something new this semester at Olbrich Botanical Gardens. In addition to classes, there are endless opportunities for you and your family to connect with nature and plants at Olbrich. During your next visit, you could:

• Enjoy the summer evening with a concert on the Great Lawn.

• Get an insider’s view of Olbrich’s outdoor gardens during a free guided garden stroll.

Pollinator Week June 17 - 23, 2019

Pollinator Week is an international celebration of the valuable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats, and beetles. It also brings attention to the urgent issue of declining pollinator populations. Celebrate pollinators with us and spread the word about what can be done to protect them.

Bumble Bees of Wisconsin A number of important Wisconsin bee species are in decline, including the familiar bumble bee. Learn about bumble bees of Wisconsin and their importance as pollinators, plus the environmental threats, conservation e�orts, and current research underway at UW-Madison. Creative Native Bee House Workshop Learn about structures you can build to encourage native bees to take up residence in your landscape, and then build a small house for non-stinging, solitary bees. �e unique bee house is constructed using hollow stems and other bee-friendly tubes. Macro Photography and Butterflies Discover macro photography and butterflies in this workshop. Learn about macro photography equipment options, basic depth-of-field issues, how to get the best photo of various subjects, using a flash, and how to take great butterfly photographs. �en, we will go into the conservatory or outdoor gardens to take photographs. Information emphasis is for DSLR and mirrorless camera users, but will benefit all camera types. Bring a camera and o -camera flash, if you have one. You should understand how to use your camera modes and manual exposure settings. Wet Felted Centerpiece Mat Workshop Wet felting is the process of combining layers of wool roving and wool yarns into one flat piece of felt fabric. In this class, you will learn how to wet felt a fabulous centerpiece mat for your table using prefelt Merino roving in di erent colors and wool yarn to customize your design. �ere are many possibilities for designs, including a flower motif or even a butterfly shape. Explore the wonder of the natural world with your family. Learn & Play Together classes are a great opportunity for parents or caregivers to spend quality time with their children. Classes are designed for you to explore nature-themed topics side-by-side with your child as they engage in hands-on, fun, age-appropriate experiences. Children must be accompanied by an adult; limit two age-appropriate children per adult; adult attends free. Dress for the activity and weather. Limited space; register early and by the deadline.

FAMILY CLASSES

Plant, Water, Grow! Explore how plants grow and what they need to survive! Class includes hands-on plant dissections, a guided walk to discover the diversity of plants growing at Olbrich, and time for you to plant your own small garden to take home. Ages 5-11 with an adult. Build a Bee House Can you bee-lieve that many bees are solitary and don’t sting? Learn all about native bees, and then build a small house for non-stinging, solitary bees. Your unique bee house will be constructed using hollow stems and other bee-friendly tubes. All supplies provided. Ages 7-11 with an adult. Make Your Own Felted Butterfly Explore the magic of wet felting and create a unique butterfly. Learn the basics of wet felting with Merino wool and use a pre-felted butterfly shape to make a pin or pendant. Instructions given for a little bit of finishing at home. Make a Felted Fantasy Garden Create your own magical land and creatures! We will use needle felting to create a small playscape on a piece of fabric. You decide how it will look - a magic pond, mushroom chairs, flower covered hills - the possibilities are endless! The Science of Snow When we think of plants, we often think of sunny, warm days. Did you know some plants actually appreciate snow too?! Visit our new Frautschi Family Learning Center anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for family-focused, hands-on science explorations to learn more about the relationships between snow, cold temperatures, and plants. Create your own winter-themed art project to take home. No registration necessary! Open to all ages with an adult.

Storytelling is the social and cultural activity of sharing stories, sometimes with improvisation, theatrics, or embellishment. Join us in our Children’s Kitchen Garden as we foster our connection with plants and food through storytelling. Classes begin with storytelling followed by preparing a snack together, and then exploring plants through hands-on activities. Snacks will not include common food allergens. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Join us for an engaging storytelling of the classic story Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett! Food may fall from the sky in this classic tale, but the food we eat grows from the ground. We will take a taste tour of the garden, make connections between foods in the story and plants, and create a salad snack together.

The Greater Madison Writing Project, in partnership with Olbrich Botanical Gardens, hosts workshops and camps for young writers (those entering grades 3-8) and high school writers (those entering grades 9-12). Participants write in a beautiful setting using Olbrich’s outdoor gardens and tropical conservatory as inspiration. The supportive environment is led by a staff of Greater Madison Writing Project Fellows and experienced teachers of writing whose goal is to inspire and support writers of all abilities. At the end of each camp, writers will share their favorite pieces of writing from the week for their families and friends at an evening celebration. Each participant will contribute a piece of writing to be published in an anthology; each participant receives a copy.

Confirmation Notices Email correspondence is used to provide registrants with the most current information for classes and programs, including confirmation notices, supply lists, and receipts. Your email address will not be shared with any other individual or organization.

Cancellations & Refunds Class registrants who cancel 7 or more days prior to the class are subject to a 20% processing fee (minimum of $5). Cancellations with less than 7 days notice are non-refundable; please consider your payment a donation to Olbrich. Refunds are not given for missed classes. As available, class handouts may be emailed if requested within 7 days of a missed class. Email [email protected] to inquire about handouts for missed classes.

Classes canceled by Olbrich due to low enrollment, instructor emergency, or hazardous weather conditions are fully refunded. You will be notified by email and/or telephone as early as possible if a class is canceled. Olbrich is not responsible for lack of notification if you do not have an answering service.
