In efforts to raise awareness about the importance of heart health, February has been designated National Heart Health Month. Heart disease remains a paramount concern, and leading reason of death, for people aged 65 years and older, according to the U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC). We aim to encourage our staff, families and residents to focus on their own heart health this month with these four easy steps to a healthy heart:
Visit your doctor – Getting your blood pressure tested and learning what your blood pressure should be is a great first step to a healthy heart.
Stop Harmful Behaviors—Unhealthy eating habits and smoking are two of the biggest contributors to heart disease. If you struggle with either of these behaviors, take steps to reduce or quit.
Increase Physical Activity— To improve
overall cardiovascular health the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise. That is about thirty minutes of aerobic activity at least five days a week. Not sure you can give it that much? Something is better than nothing! Try one of our many exercise classes that we offer throughout the week, you can find them in our activity calendar.
Improve Diet— A healthful diet of nutrient dense fruits and vegetables will go a long way in improving heart health. Maintain-ing a healthy weight is essential to heart health. Avoid foods high in sugar and sodium and increase amounts of vegetables and fruits to easily improve your diet.
Show yourself some love this February by focusing on your heart health!

Thank you Mary for all you do!
What exactly is Leap Year and why does it only happen every four years? We’ve done the research to bring you these cool facts about Leap Year: Leap Year = an extra day! A leap year
consists of 366 days as opposed to a common year which has 365 days. The actual length of a year is 365.242 days which leads to the need of an extra day every four years.
History of Leap Year: Julius Caesar has been referred to as the Father of Leap Year. In 45 BC he changed calendars to reflect the needed extra day in Februarius every four years.
Leaplings: Children born on February 29th are called Leaplings. On years that are not a leap year they often celebrate their birthday on either February 28th or March 1.
Proposals: A tradition that originates from Ireland encourages women to propose on February 29.
Frogs: Frogs are considered the symbol for leap year.
Happy leap year!

SPOTLIGHT NEW RESIDENTS
Stan Fullerton was born in Portland Oregon. He was soon adopted and moved to
North Michigan. In school he became acquainted with agricultural and vocational
classes, this brought to his fingertips the ability and inspiration to do things with
wood and metal. One of his instructors was a one armed black smith, he taught
Stan how to complete his art pieces in fine detail and encouraged him greatly. The
day after graduation he enlisted in the Marine Corps.
After completing his duty in the Marines Stan settled on the Oregon Coast. He
briefly studied painting with local artists but decided to pack his bags and hitch
hiked to New York City. He started painting and drawing especially in the parks.
Stan said he “accidently” found Greenwich Village where a little gallery bought his
paintings.
Stan decided to move back to the West Coast there he “accidently” found Santa Cruz, California! There were 2 to
3 people that were buying his paintings in Santa Cruz. He enjoyed working as a bartender at night to make ends
meet; that is where he first met a lovely red headed lady “Gail”.
Stan & Gail sparked a friendship, so when she needed a place to live he offered her a room at his place. They
soon fell in love and decided to get married in Mexico. Gail was a literary artist and a professor. She earned
degrees from Nebraska and Oregon, she loved to write and was very much involved in the literary world. She
continued to excel in her career, ultimately advancing to becoming the President of San Jose State University.
Stan & Gail were happily married for 50 years, sadly she passed away in December 2015.
Stan loves animals and they love him. For a time he and his wife lived on 25 acres just 12 miles below the
Oregon Border. His Australian Shepherd “Lucky” loved to ride on the tractor with Stan when he was tending to
the 2 or 3 gardens on his land.
We welcome Stan and his beautiful Maine Coon Cat “Red” to Evergreen Court, it is great to have them with us!

Bob Sturtevant began a life long interest in radio, at the young age of 7 years old
when he started fooling around with the knobs on his dad’s radio. Without his
knowing what he was doing he had tuned into WCBS in New York City with the
Brooklyn Dodgers playing from their home field. Bob was in England at the time!
What Bob was doing was called Short Wave listening. Stations all over the world
broadcast in English and can be easily tuned into with the right equipment. Some
people enjoy tuning into AM radio stations all over the country.
Bob is an Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator or a Ham. He is also a certified
Instructor and has helped many people get their Ham License.
Anyone interested in learning about how to get the most out of radio? Bob has two presentations scheduled on
February's calendar: Wednesday, 17th at 2:30 p.m. “How to Get More out of Radio” & Monday, 29th “Intro to
Ham Radio” Yes, you could all be an Amateur Radio Operator talking to people all over the world!

A Resident Council is an independent, organized group
of people living in a community that meets on a regular
basis (2nd Friday every month) to discuss concerns,
develop suggestions on improving services and help
plan social activities.
Congratulations & Thank You For All You Do!
In Kindergarten your idea of a good friend was
the person who let you have the red crayon
when all that was left was the ugly gray one.
The idea of a good friend is still the person who
gives you the better of the two choices, holds
your hand when you’re scared, helps you fight
off those who try to bring you down, thinks of
you at times when you are not there, reminds
you of what you have forgotten, helps you put
the past behind you but understand when you
need to hold onto it for just a bit longer, stays
with you so that you have confidence, goes out
of their way to make time for you, helps you
clear up your mistakes, and most of all, lets you
know that you will always be loved.
A friend is someone who knows the song in
your heart and can sing it back to you even if
you have forgotten the words.
Friendship ...
It isn't how you forget, but how you forgive.
Not how you listen, but how you understand.
Not how you see, but how you feel.
Not how you let go, but how you hold on!
Celebrate the Gift of Friendship on Valentine’s Day
Remember the days of agonizing over whether to send the
Winnie the Pooh or Looney Tunes Valentines cards? When
the entire class sent and received little notes of
friendship? When we compared the sayings on our little
sweethearts candies to see whose were “better”? The class-
room was always filled with such excitement as everyone
delivered their Valentines into each handmade Valentine
mailbox.
Everyone loves chocolate and roses, but when did
Valentine’s Day become solely about romance? This year,
let’s get back in touch with our inner child and celebrate all
of our friends and loved ones! In Finland, for example,
February 14th is Friend’s Day. The official flower of
Friend’s Day is the pink rose – no complaints there! So,
treat your friends this Valentine’s Day. Start a new tradition
in honor of those dearest to you. After all, where would we
be without our friends?
Friends forgive no matter what. Friends are there for you
when the going gets tough. Friends are your biggest
cheerleaders. Friends have your back. They may not
always say, “I love you”, but in every hug they give, piece
of chocolate they share, joke they tell, that’s really what
they’re telling you. No matter how far away you might be,
your friends are always there. ~ B.A.M.

Enjoy A Leap Day in February
Hello February, already! February is well known for two
things, Valentine’s Day, and Leap Day. Julius Caesar is
considered to be the ”father” of leap year. To keep the
calendar system in line with the seasons, Roman officials
were supposed to insert an extra month every so often, but by
the time Caesar began to rule Rome, the calendar had gotten
seriously out of order. Caesar consulted with top astronomers
of the day, and in 46 B.C decided to add one day every four
years to make up the discrepancy between the lunar and solar
calendars.
Another bit of interesting information, according to British
tradition, a leap day is the only day of the year a woman can
propose marriage to a man. As legend has it, in fifth century
Ireland, St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about the fact
that woman had to wait for men to propose. So St. Patrick
allowed women one day every four years to take the
initiative.
We all have an extra day this year to take a leap forward, love
life and have fun!

Five
Steps
To A
Healthy
Heart
It’s all coming up hearts this February, but not just in preparation for Cupid’s arrival. In efforts to raise
awareness about the importance of heart health, February has been designated National Heart Health Month.
Heart disease remains a paramount concern, and leading reason of death, for people aged 65 years and older,
according to the U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC). It affects 37 percent of men and 26 per-
cent of women 65 and older.
In a national effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the United States by 2017, the CDC is
encouraging Americans to make blood pressure control their goal. Adults of any age should know their blood
pressure, and if it is high focus on controlling their blood pressure through diet, exercise, and in some cases,
medication. We aim to encourage our staff, families and residents to focus on their own heart health this month
with these five easy steps to a healthy heart:
Visit your doctor – Getting your blood pressure tested and learning what your blood pressure should be is a great
first step to a healthy heart.
Stop Harmful Behaviors—Unhealthy eating habits and smoking are two of the biggest contributors to heart
disease. If you struggle with either of these behaviors, take steps to reduce or quit.
Increase Physical Activity— To improve overall cardiovascular health the American Heart Association recommends
at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise. That is about thirty minutes of aerobic activity at least five
days a week. Not sure you can give it that much? Something is better than nothing! Try one of our many
exercise classes that we offer throughout the week, you can find them in our activity calendar.
Improve Diet— A healthful diet of nutrient dense fruits and vegetables will go a long way in improving heart
health. Maintaining a healthy weight is essential to heart health. Avoid foods high in sugar and sodium and in-
crease amounts of vegetables and fruits to easily improve your diet.
Get Good Quality Sleep-- Not getting enough sleep or getting too much sleep may put you at risk for heart
disease according to researchers at the Center for Cohort Studies at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital. Make efforts
to get at least six hours of good quality sleep to help reduce your risks.
Show yourself some love this February by focusing on your heart health!
