APPA Award for Effective and

Innovative Practices July 2011

By applying lean principles to custodial

and maintenance functions, SDCCD

eliminated the need to add 20 positions,

shaving off $813,000 in the first of a seven-

year process. Additional efficiencies implemented over the

next six years will increase savings to $20 million.
