We do not pretend that any company adopting a defender or prospector strategy will have an architecture corresponding to one of these two case studies,

But, after Das et alii in a normative approach, then by a quantitative study carried out by Croteau, the qualitative approach illustrates and enriches our understanding of these types, and in particular the second both on an architectural level management level and an IS management level.



As far as openness is concerned, integration by interface can only be partial.

However, this is not only practiced but desired in order to control the closure of architecture, mirroring the image of hierarchical and formal management as the I.B.A. case study shows.



The need to use outside developments doesn’t oppose the two types in a clear manner,

in the case of the open system these resources are then internalized, even in the shape of a subsidiary company,

whereas in the case of the closed system, external consultants are permanently on site.



appropriation of integration goes through a meta-project managed either with or without participation.

In the case of open architecture, however, the importance of the commitment of the management team is decisive. It allows both global integration in the functional dimension by legitimizing a cross-functional approach that remains counter-cultural, (Capitaine, TFE, 2003), and to reassure the staff by effectively distinguishing between internal and external IS projects knowing that they share the same logical pivot database of system integration.
