Kettle’s Yard On Castle Street in Cambridge is a beautiful and unique house containing

a distinctive collection of modern art with an exhibition gallery next door.

The exhibitions in the gallery this summer should intrigue and delight

visitors. Delve into the world of young contemporary artist Andy Holden

from 14 May in an exhibition that encompasses everything from ceramics

to an outdoor sound installation. The following exhibition offers a

surprising exploration of art and history in St Ives through a wide range

of work including paintings, film, models and archival material.

house & permanent collectionThe house at Kettle’s Yard contains the permanent collection of modern

British and European art. Kettle’s Yard was the home of Jim Ede, the first

modern art curator at the Tate Gallery, who came to Cambridge in 1957.

His collection includes paintings by Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Christopher

Wood, David Jones and Alfred Wallis, and sculpture by Henry Moore,

Barbara Hepworth, Constantin Brancusi and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.

This exhibition is introspective and encyclopaedic in its nature – it brings together Holden’s sculpture, music, films, paintings, posters and performances for the first time to explore some recurring themes in his work, such as memory, duration, and our attachment to objects.

Andy Holden works with plaster, bronze, ceramics, found objects and images, household paint and printmaking, sound and performance; he has created monumental outdoor sculptures, affordable multiples and complex, poetic events. He makes the plinths and cases that display his work, and the posters that promote and document his performances. He composes music and has his own band, ‘The Grubby Mitts’. Each activity informs other aspects of his work in a cumulative way. His work is complex, experimental, and attentive to a wide web of cultural references.

This is the first major exhibition of Andy Holden’s work in the UK. Holden is a young British artist who first came to public attention with his ‘Pyramid Piece’ in Art Now at Tate Britain in 2010.

A new publication, structured around a conversation with Dan Cox and including contributions by Juan Cruz, Lizzie Fisher, Darian Leader, Joe Saunders, Aimée Selby, Jon K. Shaw and Tyler Woolcott, will accompany this exhibition.

six short Works in timeSaturday, 9 July, 6pm Incorporating projected film, a live camera feed, spoken word, and a string quartet performing music by Johnny Parry and The Grubby Mitts, conducted by Johnny Parry. Featuring the premiere of Quartet for Thingly Time, composed especially for the exhibition.

Von Ribbentrop in St Ives is an exhibition and a book by painter, author and filmmaker Andrew Lanyon. The exhibition revolves around two seemingly unrelated moments in history. Joachim Von Ribbentrop, German Ambassador for Britain and later Foreign Minister in Nazi Germany holidayed in Cornwall in the 1930s and gathered intelligence in preparation for a German attack on Britain. The other event is the ‘discovery’ by the London-based artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood of Cornish fisherman-turned-painter Alfred Wallis in 1928.

Perfectly suited to the backdrop of the house at Kettle’s Yard, the exhibition includes works by Andrew Lanyon, his father Peter Lanyon, Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson, Christopher Wood, Alexander Calder and Naum Gabo, archival material, interactive models and specially commissioned works by Paul Chaney, Kenny Everett, Olly Hadfield, Chris James, Sam Lanyon, Paul Mates, Debbie Prosser, Paul Spooner, Stella Turk, Paul Vibert and Carlos Zapata.
