Service-Pack aiming at considerably improving the performance of Piston Ring and Cylinder Liner on RTA76-48 2-stroke engines of Wärtsilä (Sulzer) design, built in HCP S.A. As one of the licensed manufacturers of 2-stroke crosshead engines we have a chance to observe the results of the performance of cylinder liner / piston units during the services carried out on board the vessels. On the ground of our experiences gathered during engine servicing, H.Cegielski-Service Sp. z o.o. has elaborated solution which considerably improve the performance of cylinder liner / piston units and fulfil the clients’ expectations for safe and failure-free piston and cylinder liner performance. In close co-operation with our clients, numerous tests were carried out in real service on board the ships, without any simulations. While more and more running hours had been accumulated by the engines operating according to the charters conditions, adequate adjustments in the piston / cylinder liner unit were made. Now we can present well proven and effective solution to the piston running problems. That solution is low-cost, safe and it can be applied at any time. But for the necessary new parts, which in most cases are piston rings only, the solution comprises just a set of guide lines for modifications of some of the engine parameters and solutions which are currently applied on the engines. It turned out that the better results are achieved by applying such modifications which allow to lower the temperature of cylinder liner walls to such level which, on the one hand, secures an efficient use of lubricating oil to lubricate cylinder liner walls, and, on the other hand, secures the protection against the excessive burning of lubricating oil. More efficient, according to above mentioned modification, the lubrication of cylinder liners (with reduced carbon deposit content) influences to performance of cylinder liner / piston units very good. This favourable influence is very considerably for low quality cylinder liners (lower content of hard phase or irregularly spread hard phase). Our solution prolongs (to a certain degree) the time between overhauling or between repairs of units Below, we present a unit break down which occurred on one of the engine of HCP production, in this case of RTA type. The following basic principles must be fulfilled to successfully improve the performance of piston rings and cylinder liners:

Basing on own exploitation experiences, H.Cegielski-SERVICE confirms that the best operational results of cylinder liner-piston unit mating are achieved when the cylinder liner material contains min. 5% of hard phase distributed over the cylinder liner surface. H.Cegielski-SERVICE definitely recommends the application of such cylinder liners on the engines.

The scavenging air after the air coolers must not contain water mist. CSR Pack® allows to secure that.

The cylinder liner wall temperature in the Top Dead Centre must lay safely below the flash point of the cylinder lubricant so that to enable the lubricant to fulfil its task – to lubricate and not to burn. CSR Pack® allows to secure that.

Piston rings must be characterised by high quality and must be supplied by approved producers. H.Cegielski-SERVICE recommend a TOP of piston ring of the new design, tested in operation by us.

The engine must not suffer from lack of the combustion air, which usually leads to the thermal overload the engine. Furthermore, prevention against the piston ring fluttering must be granted by suitable relation of combustion pressure to compression pressure. We ensure the implementation of adequate adjustments on the engine.

It is definitely recommended that CSR Pack® is applied as a complete set. Nevertheless, the improvement will be achieved also, to the certain degree, if points 3 and 2 are implemented only. In that case however, it is to be accepted that the expected extension of the service intervals (TBO) will not be achieved.

We know from our service experience that after the application of the full package You will be satisfied with the

performance of working units during the long-term service. Our package provides the following advantages:

it eliminates or considerably reduces the failures in the piston-cylinder liner unit

it prolongs the life-time of the cylinder liners of even poor quality by 100%

it decisively prolongs the life-time of the cylinder liners even of the good quality
