Leading Through Living Salutes the Class of 2013!
Seventeen women representing four states, ranging in age from early 20’s to late 50’s, seeking guidance from lead presenter Lynita Mitchell-Blackwell to transition from one career to the next or advance to the next level in their careers all had one thing in common Saturday October 5, 2013: they comprised the fifth Leadership class of the Jewell Jackson McCabe Emerging Leaders Institute! Participants enjoyed a robust discussion focused on brand and image management that encompassed biography creation, executive resume presentation, professional journal submissions, social media management, network development and the differences between a mentor and a champion. They also introduced their 10 and under selves to their powerful current selves which sparked instant camaraderie viewing pictures depicting 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s hairstyles, clothing, and swag. Overcoming a change in venue opening time and a few technical difficulties (that included the projector only wanting to work when upside down – go figure!), the class had a wonderful time individually and collectively evaluating their brand’s effectiveness and presenting their best “selves” to the world. Feedback from the group included:
-“This was so worth the drive! I am so glad I
came today.”
-“It was wonderful meeting all the amazing
women. I have a lot to digest from this morning’s
session.”
-“The session today was so relevant.”
The class also left with Evening Enhancement (also known as homework) to put into practice all that was shared to enhance their biographies and resumes, polish their online presence, network to establish mutually beneficial relationships, and strengthen bonds with mentors so they may become champions. The ELI 2013 Class is well on its way to becoming the best class yet!
“IT WAS WONDERFUL MEETING
ALL THE AMAZING WOMEN.”
Making the Net Work for You
My friends and family often tease me about being out and about so often. I received a Facebook message from a longtime girlfriend this morning inquiring where I get the clothes to go with all my outings. (My reply was that I mix and match a bunch!) We are all told that to be a successful person in any business or industry, we must network. Traditionally, that entailed attending mixers, fundraisers, and meetings so that one could exchange small talk and business cards with as many new people as one could. I challenge that theory: I no longer network. I make my existing Net Work for Me. I intentionally support people, organizations, and causes I am passionate about which leads to me being out and about. At each of these events, I am in my warm circle – whether I actually know someone personally or not – because at least one other person is in attendance for the same reason as I. I feel comfortable walking up to strangers and striking up a conversation because we are in attendance to truly enjoy the occasion (or at least the people who will make it come to fruition).
Having a genuine connection with others makes it easy to follow up, ask for the next meeting where you may explore possible teaming opportunities, create genuine relationships, and gain access to other events and/or organization meetings that you may have interest in supporting. I challenge you to try this method of networking for the next month and tell me how it goes. I truly believe that you will experience a joy in networking, mixing and mingling that was lacking before today. Enjoy your next function with gusto!
