As a youth, Heather dreamed of moving off the streets and having a safe and warm roof over her head.

After her husband passed, Eileen became an isolated senior in her own home and needed to feel a reason to live.

It’s because of you these hopes and dreams became reality. Thank you for your Leadership support that made this possible for Heather and Eileen.

I can assure you that your gift is actively working to change the odds and change lives. This past year, your generosity provided vital funding to 65 agencies, offering 129 programs that helped more than 200,000 people. This extraordinary reach into the community exists because of you. Investments helped these individuals overcome obstacles and to enter a journey of transformation.

We have much more work ahead of us. We know demand is outpacing access and together, we need to do more.

At your United Way, the future is bright. It is bright because of you. Your support is uncovering new opportunities to engage like never before and creating a platform for innovation. This will be accomplished through a new and exciting three-year strategic plan, based on research and evidence.

“I have been donating to United Way since I started my career at Dominion Securities in the early 1980’s. For me, giving to United Way Halton & Hamilton is personal. There was a time when I was a single, unemployed mother, rebuilding my life after a divorce where money was tight and my emotional state was fragile. I thought we would need to live in a tent on a friend’s lawn and use a food bank. It never occurred to me United Way was there to help.

“I really didn’t know what United Way did. This is why, when asked, I accepted a role on the Campaign Cabinet. The past year was amazing. United Way is critical to the health of our community. I know that United Way could have helped me as a single mother or my children when they got sick. I want others in the same position to know that there is help and support. Giving to United Way is a way that I can humbly share love and my gratitude for every kind gesture of the heart and hands.”

As a United Way donor for 50 years, you might say I believe in giving back to the communities in which we live and work. I first donated through my workplace campaign at Procter & Gamble. P&G is a major long-term United Way supporter in Canada and elsewhere - in terms of their donations, including matching employee donations, and their loaning of expert resources to ensure campaigns are successful. When I was invited to join the local United Way’s volunteer Board of Directors in June 2000, it was a great honour. There, I learned much more about United Way’s substantial reach into the social fabric of its various communities and the incredibly important work they do every day, to support those in need through the very diverse agencies they support.
